In some respects, this is evidence in support of the BBC using "Season 31" instead.

A few years ago, I would have agreed with you. For a long time, it seemed like I was the only contrarian here who referred to the 1st 4 seasons of the new series as Seasons 27-30. But now, I think it's too late. There are too many viewers who just don't care about the old series anyway. If you suddenly started calling it Season 31 instead of Season 5, they would get really confused. (It's the same way a handful of Star Wars viewers were when they saw The Empire Strikes Back labeled as Episode V. Since the earliest prints of A New Hope didn't have the Episode IV designation, they thought that they'd somehow missed Episodes II-IV.)

My current optimistic theory is that the reason why so many of the old episodes are missing is because the remaining prints were stolen by my future self with a time machine.
