Tridimensional Chess -- Help

Hey anyone & everyone,

I'm looking to buy a replica Tridimensional Chess set as seen on the series (esp. TOS). I've looked on eBay, and there only seems to be a limited edition one made by the Franklin Mint that is gold/silver plated and WAAAY too expensive. Are there cheaper alternatives (currently or previously) in production?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

There certainly used to be because my brother had one back in the day, and I know it wasn't an expensive one. It was, you know, plastic, and a bit rickety, but it did look cool. I've been meaning to look around for it one of these days when I go home for a visit because I would love to have it and display it. I never could manage to play the dang thing, alas.

I don't think I have ever seen a mass produced version of tri dimensional chess. I did a quick search on Amazon and they do have a set that is similar but not the "real McCoy".

And I am not telling you this to gloat but I purchased the Franklin Mint Version about ten years ago and I have to say it was worth every penny. I never could get the hang of playing it but the set is just beautiful. It is smaller than you would expect but the detail is amazing. It also comes with an instruction booklet and a padded storage box for the pieces. If you can find one for a decent price and you have the cash to spare, I would snap it up. You won't be disappointed.

So there are rules for Trek-style three-dimensional chess -- you can actually play it?

I don't think the set my brother had was "licensed." I think some game manufacturer or other just capitalized on the popularity of Star Trek and produced a Trekkish 3D chess set. So it probably wasn't authentic, but at least at age 10, I thought it was totally cool, and so did he.

From what I can remember, the instructions are very detailed and actually show you how to play. It also includes pictures and diagrams. And I would give you more information but I have been moving around a lot lately for work and the set, along with almost everything else I own, is in storage at the moment.

Hey guys and gals,

Update: I found a seller on eBay who makes these himself and sells them on eBay as a hobby. Apparently, he's a professional model/prop builder and the set he made for me is outstanding, truly a piece of art. And it is quite large, almost as big as in the show. For another $5, he'll throw in an extra set of pieces (being so high up, they tend to fall and break). At ~$80, it is a much cheaper alternative than the $250 the official set commands, and the custom-built one has no Star Trek logos or anything, so in that sense it is more authentic to the ones we saw in the show.
