i just registered for telling you guys that Halkun is still alive and working on a even more dedicated project than before! check out his video on youtube here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn2-d5a3r94
    its already gone viral!

apparently his harddisk crashed and he lost close to all of his Sketchup Enterprise D data and then moved to MindCraft, a 8bit sandbox-mmo, to fulfill his childhood dream of building a 1:1 scale model of his beloved enterprise ;)

you can read it all up in the description of the above video - he did link to this thread there and thats how i found my way here by the way ;)

This is awesome! Excellent work. :techman:

Oh, and sojourner, unless your name appears in green or yellow, please stop acting like a bloody mod all over this board. It's getting quite tiresome.

    indeed!

^I'm sorry, but until your name appears in green or yellow, I really don't have to do as you direct. Pot, kettle, black.

That's funny, my name does show up in green!

sojourner - don't worry about whether the threads are old, or if there are others on the same topic. If you want to be helpful, great - post a link to the other thread and don't be condescending about it; this a friendly board, and we can treat each other with respect.

The rest of you - chill out, don't bait or take bait; if you have an issue or feel something needs to be addressed, hit the "Notify" link. I usually come in pretty quickly. I don't generally read every post of every thread (unfortunately, this version of the board software doesn't have that feature, which was very handy in the past, I'll tell you!), but I'm usually no more than a click away - things never need to get out of hand.

    Thanks, guys!

    And to answer Saquist's question.

Halkun's original Sketchup version shown in this thread was lost in a harddrive crash. I think after that he was just curious to see if it could be done in minecraft.

In response to a question that was posted here before: Rick Sternbach had confided in me when he had put together his set of plans that he had intended to leave all of the flushing out of the spaces of the ship to me (which he did five years after I had already finished my plans). He never mentioned anything like this to me at the time I was drawing my blueprints. So basically, all of his deck shapes are taken directly off of my drawings and calculations (which saved him and his crew a lot of time).
Incidentally, your 1:1 model is coming along nicely. I noticed you changed the scale a bit to fit the software. Keep me posted on your progress.

^Hey Ed, nice to see you post here. Unfortunately I am pretty sure this project died when the original poster had a harddrive crash. Such a shame.

You're correct. The shot was CLEARLY intended to be a "zoom in" right onto Picard... a "transition" shot. The only reason it's not totally smooth is that this was done with optical effects... pre-CGI. The INTENT of the shot was absolutely clear, and it was really pretty effective.

"Here's the ship... and this guy is on the ship." The same as the opening shot from "The Cage," by the way... it's called an "establishing shot," in this case intended to connect the outside appearance of the ship to the actions happening inside, in the eyes of the audience.

The shot was really very effective. Why anyone would question either the actual on-screen presentation of the shot, or the intent of the shot, is a mystery to me.

    EDIT:

That was odd... I saw that set of posts as "new" posts... for a moment. After I posted, the more recent ones showed up. Internet weirdness, I guess?

    Anyway...

Welcome to the TrekBBS, Ed... I hope you'll stick around! :)

^I sometimes get to the bottom of a page of posts thinking it's the last and not realizing there are more.

halkun, awesome project!! The E-D is my favourite ship - soooo elegant (and big!). Many thanx for giving us an insight into the sheer scale of the E-D.

Hi Ed Whitefire, nice to see you on the board. :)

If anyone wants a little more background on the creation of Ed's blueprints there's an interview he gave me about them posted here

Hate to tell ya, but this project is dead. He had a harddrive crash and decided to do it in minecraft instead. Which could be learned from actually reading some of the posts in this thread. But yeah, I suppose 5 pages is too much to read of something you find "real interesting". Or is Dominique the start of a spam account that's just posting in random threads to begin with?
