Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact books?

Almost Unique

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I'm a couple years behind and I didn't know which books might be necessary as background. My apologies if this has been asked in another thread.

I've read Book 1 of Destiny, about to start book 2.

The last Titan book I read was Sword of Damocles.

The last DS9 book I read was Fearful Symmetry.

The last TNG book I read was Death in Winter. (While reading Destiny book 1 it was clear I'd missed at least a thing or two in the TNG stream).

Wow....it's been years since I've more than lurked here. You guys are cool btw.:cardie:

If you scan the "Borg Invasion Reading Order" thread, you'll get the answers you seek.

Don't worry about anything before Destiny. Yes, you've missed a few things, but Destiny serves as a pretty solid re-introduction to anything you missed. (The whole Aventine crew, for instance, is brand new for that trilogy; it may seem like you've missed backstory, but the last prior appearance of Ezri is on the DS9 station, just thinking about leaving. Everything after that is new in Destiny.)

After Destiny, there have only been 6 books so far. In a rough reading order:

TNG - Losing The Peace
A Singular Destiny
VOY - Full Circle
VOY - Unworthy
TTN - Over A Torrent Sea
TTN - Synthesis

The VOY books won't have anything to do with Typhon Pact, though, so you can skip those completely unless you want to get into Voyager on its own. They're GREAT, and very much worth reading, but not at all important for Typhon Pact. That just leaves 4.

And honestly, since Titan novels are pretty standalone anyway, you can even probably miss those if you just want to jump ahead.

I would definitely recommend reading Destiny, Losing The Peace, and A Singular Destiny first though. That'll make a huge difference.

i'd just say finish the Destiny trilogy and read A Singular Destiny personally...

Re: Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact bo

Excellent. Thanks for the input, guys. I appreciate it. I would've finished Destiny first anyway, I just didn't know what was going on in Titan, TNG & DS9. Gonna read em all eventually anyway, just a question of what first.

Re: Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact bo

Losing the Peace is a good story on the recovery of the Federation following the Borg invasion, but it takes place almost entirely before the Typhon Pact is formed.

Basically, if you're looking to read the immediate prelude to the Typhon Pact, you only NEED to read Destiny and A Singular Destiny. But even with the both of them, the Typhon Pact itself is not majorly involved - the last few chapters of ASD are really the only parts that show them as a player, everything else serves as set up for its appearance, and that's really about the point ASD ends. The Typhon Pact itself has not been a major player in any novel that is currently out.

Greater than the Sum would be nice to read before you read the TNG Typhon Pact book in February, just because it sets up the current TNG bridge crew. It introduced the character of Lt. T'Ryssa Chen, the new first contact and diplomatic officer. She's also the ship's clown and youthful imp.

One would think that with her role she'll have more than a few lines in the diplomatically-centred Paths of Disharmony but who knows what Dayton used her for.

Losing the Peace give a flavour of the hard times and struggles the Federation is going through as the Typhon Pact gets its act together, but you can give it a miss and not lose anything.

Knowing Dayton's reputation, cannon fodder. :rommie:

Re: Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact bo

She's a Regular. He'd have to get editorial permission to kill her off.

Besides, unlike Wesley Crusher she does NOT deserve to be phasered into oblivion.

Re: Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact bo

Yeah, but only a novel regular, so it's really that big of a deal when it comes to getting permission, and she's only been in 5 books so it's not like she's a major part of the Trekverse. Not that I want her to be killed, she's one of my favorite characters, I just doubt it would be that hard to if one of the authors really wanted to.

Re: Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact bo

Thanks guys...I just became interested in this version of STNG's (well ST's future) history and was just wondering what the minimum number of novels I have to read to catch up before reading the Typhon Pact series.

^ Glad this thread was helpful. Destiny really provides a great jumping-on point; you should've seen the "What should I read before Destiny?" threads, before everyone realized that the answer to that question was "nothing, really".

Re: Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact bo

Ensign Fyyl tried to block out the cacophony of deep, buzzing alarms as he sprinted toward his post, phaser in hand. Was it an attack? Fyyl had no idea what was happening. The skinny young Bolian was less than a year out of Starfleet Academy and until that moment had counted himself lucky to have been posted to the security detail on a platform orbiting Mars, one of the safest assignments in the Federation. Now it seemed as if he was in the thick of the action—the last place he’d ever wanted to be.

Re: Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact bo

Well, the "wha" is that it's a quote of the third paragraph of Zero Sum Game Chapter 1, as excerpted on TrekMovie.com and elsewhere. The "why," however, remains elusive.

Re: Are there any books that need to be read before the Typhon Pact bo

It just came out of left field, like Tourette's for Trek...
