Great episode. The interaction between the main characters is excellent. Reminds me of NCIS... only with more explosions :techman:

Last night's episode felt like the bastard love child of 24 (with the cyber-terrorism angle, Russian bad guys, McGarrett dangling the driver from the roof and other completely OTT action scenes) and Lost (with the Hawaiian surroundings).

And yet ironically it bears no resemblance to the actual show it's supposed to actually be based on. :wtf:

Honestly, get over it. A show that worked 40 years ago simply isn't going to fly in 2010 no matter how good it may be. And there seems to be question about how good the original really was, judging from some of the responses in the thread for the new show's pilot.

If you want the old show, I'm sure there are numerous places where you can watch the original Hawaii Five-0 while the rest of us watch THIS show.

I get the disappointment from the old guard, I have certainly felt that way about other remakes and revivals, and this show is definitely a different beast. One of our local channels has timely added Hawaii Five-O reruns to their lineup so I finally got to see it (I love that someone named Kono is played by someone named Zulu) and it definitely seems a show of its time.

I'm not sure that it could be revived as is to the 10's (or whatever the hell we call this time were in). I find it funny that this episode was ribbing Dano over his tie when everyone in the original show wore a tie. I will give the original kudos that the non-whites really seemed to look authentic to the island. The whole thing was a lot stiffer though than this show and I am glad this show went the way they did.

It still remains to be seen that this series will be good as were only a couple of episodes in but I'm liking it so far.

The elevator scene with the guys not holstering their guns in the presence of the family and McGarrett adding to that by hitting the bloodied elevator button with his gun and then cocking it was hilarious. Borderline ridiculous as noted, but hilarious too.
Agreed. I loved the little kid's expressions. Scott Caan really steals the show in this series.

Did they use the same theme song? (even if it's updated )

Well forgive me for making an observation on a discussion forum. I thought we were allowed to do that here.

Am I the only one who has a real problem with the nonchalance and positive depiction of torture and intense police brutality on this show?

Not that anyone cares, but I'm done with this already, and I'll be rooting for this shit to get cancelled.

No you're not but at least they have Det Sgt Williams trying to deal with the problem eventhough Cmdr McGarrett thinks he has the Governor's permission for such action. I wouldn't be suprised if Sgt Chin Ho or McGarret face an Internal Affiars investigation before the season is over.

^Well, the way you tell the difference is that the old show was Hawaii Five-O (letter O) and the new one is Hawaii Five-0 (numeral zero). Wasn't it nice of them to provide such a clear way to keep them straight? ;)

Another way to go would be for me to actually see it. I haven't yet, which is why, until today, I didn't even know there was a new version.

I might have to check it out one of these days.

Well if you liked the new BSG, then check it out as Grace "Boomer" Park plays Kono.

Complaining about the new show gets old quick, especially when people who liked the old show, disliked the old show, and never watched the old show have more than thoroughly explained to you why they enjoy the new show. You sound like a whiny old fart who can't deal with change when literally all you do is complain why the new show isn't a 100%, scene-for-scene remake of the old show. It simply ISN'T because it's 40 years later in a very different television environment in very different times.

Hollywood is inevitably going to remake shows, for better or worse. When they made an American version of a show I adore (Coupling), I watched a few episodes and thought it was utter dreck with very few redeeming qualities. THEREFORE I STOPPED WATCHING. I didn't go and threadcrap all over review threads about the American version and ruin it for the those who were (somehow) enjoying it. The fact that the show was cancelled after only a handful of episodes was enough vindication for me.

Hmmmmmm

Set and filmed in Hawaii. Check

About a special unit that reports to the Governer. Check

McGarrett, Dano, Chin Ho, Kono. Check

Investigates cases that includes international espionage elements. Check.

Not saying there aren't differences ( mostly in tone and pace) but "no resemblance" is a big stretch.

You probably wouldn't like The Shield or Law & Order SVU.

This.

Personally I'm finding the guy who plays McGarret to be bland and void of personality, and the show to be, basically, just another action/cop show with nothing but the locale and Grace Park's fine booty to distinguish it from the rest.

I loved The Shield, but it is totally different.
What shocked me in Hawaii Five-0 was not the existence of police violence but the casualness it was portrayed in. Like in the first episode when Daniel Dae Kim smashed an ashtray or whatever that was into the suspect's face like it's nothing and it was hardly even commented on. And again in the second episode when the one cop first poked into the guy's bullet wound, then tangled him off the roof and the other cop threatened him de-facto with death by delaying providing medical attention (I stopped watching at this point). And yet this asshole complains about being accused of being a "dirty cop"? You are fucking dirty!

Yes, the cops in Shield were dirty too, but they knew it, everyone around them knew it and certainly the viewers knew it. The Strike Team's actions were never portrayed as justified; not really. They had reasons why did what they did, sometimes better sometimes worse reasons, but it was made very clear that they are wrong. And they had to face the consequences.

The locale was what set the original apart from other cop shows of the time as well. Take that away and it was just another cop show.Though I will have to agree that Jack Lord has more presence than the new guy. The new Dano is the one to watch.

Emphasis mine.

Then you missed the long scene after where Dano lectured McGarrett about torture.

Not that that is going to stop it from happening again, but, at least a character stood up and said, that's wrong.

That's just how I saw Jack Lord in 5-O. And that version only brought in eye candy near the end of its run. But back then female officers tended to just work juvinile and in the women's jail.
