Yet another Star Wars movie re-release

I agree that releasing ANH first would have the biggest 'splash' and impact -- even the biggest Lucas critics (and, let's face it, they aren't without merit) would likely line up to see ANH again in theaters, see how the 3D looks and so forth. But by the time ANH is released in 2015 (?!!?!) the novelty factor of Star Wars in theaters and in 3D will be diminished.

I just don't see a lot of people -- even though I will be one of those people -- clamoring to get in on TPM for their Star Wars fix. And as much as I enjoy the films (faults and all) I'm still going to be hard-pressed to drag myself to see AOTC. It's by far the weakest of the six, especially when it comes to repeat viewings.

I'm not surprised, though. Lucas is insistent that the saga be viewed this way. At least we ought to get the digital Yoda and not the cross-eyed-stoned muppet. :p

Hmm, a better distribution schedule would have been ANH (for it's best introduction to the ideas and concepts), ESB (to ramp up the drama), then the PT to explain Vader's revelation at the end of ESB, then finally ROTJ to finish out the saga. At least that's how I watch the DVDs at home.

I'd be interested, but only if they do it *right*. When talking about the quality of the 3D, the track record for movies converted after the fact isn't too good. I certainly wouldn't want to see a 3D Star Wars where Luke looks like a cardboard cutout.

I'm just seeing in my mind's eye the Star Destroyer flying overhead at the start of ANH or the Death Star trench run in 3d, its incredible. What won'y be will be the Rancor monster and Speeder Bike chase from Jedi, at least not without CGI replacing the stop motion puppet and blue screen respectively.
Hey do you think there's a chance that Han will shoot first and that Hayden Christiansen will film the Darth Vader unmasking scene in place of Sebastian Shaw?

Let's see... so TPM in 2012, the others released each year after that...

Alright, I'll see you in the theater in 2015 for ANH.

What I find as interesting as anything is that these re-re-releases will be the first time that a whole new THIRD generation will have the chance to either be introduced to Star Wars or see them in the theater.

There will be some 6-7yr old boy whose maybe seen a cartoon, at most, but his dad will have the chance to share SW on the big screen with him, just like he did.

That is franchise growth right there.

I know its been covered but god, while the OT actors are still alive I'd love to at least start a sequel trilogy with them. Even if they all died in episode 7.

The article says that each conversion will take "at least a year," and that's the timeframe that James Cameron has cited as being necessary for a good conversion.

Considering it's only gonna be a year behind the blu-ray release I'd say it's safe to say Lucas needs some money.

Yeah...Lucas needs money so badly, he was able to donate half of his fortune to charity just recently. Poor guy, must be tough for him these days.

Are you joking, or is there something else that I missed? Lucas gave half his money to charity? Come on, NOBODY does that.

Lol, I can't wait to see how they advertise TPM again. I predict most of the emphasis will be on the podrace, the final lightsaber battle, and a few pretty special effects shots. No glimpse of Jar-Jar, the Neimoidians, the final ground battle or anything else that might remind people of just how boring and awful the movie REALLY was.

I'd see the original trilogy-- I just want to see those films in theaters, even if it is in 3-D!

You didn't see them in theaters originally? My first time seeing episode 4 was at a drive-in in 1977. It was hard to follow because of the people in the car in front of us kept talking and throwing popcorn for some reason, so my mom and I went again the next weekend at out local theater, and this time, got alot more out of it. At least, as much as my then seven year old mind could.

That's why he needs the money! :p

Moi neither. But the kids might be able to power it through...

Disagree. In its hilarious badness, it's not as dull as TPM, not as offensive to the overall canon as ROTS, and:

Yeah.

Still, will that be enough to get me to the theater? No. No, I think not...

He's not alone.

I've been calling myself Yoda online for far longer than the Prequel Trilogy was around to stink up the franchise. But c'mon, making 30 year old movies '3D' is kind of like colorizing old black and white movies. It's just not going to look right. I mean yeah I'm sure they can redo a lot of the special effects, especially the space stuff, but the original models have a lot more character and charm than what they added in the late 90s and I don't expect this to be very different. Especially if they bring prequel trilogy design sensibilities into the remake. Ugh.

I can't wait for the Indy 3D remakes! Just think of how awesome Harrison Fords lethargic 'action' scenes from the Crystal Skull will look. Imagine his wrinkles POPPING OUT AT YOU IN 3D!!!

Yep, pretty much.

Although by then I'll have my Blu-Rays, so I may not even bother.

Exactly. Will 3D really do it for you? Will the shots of the Millennium Falcon flying towards you in 3D make you want to buy the 3D Blu-Rays when they come out?

Not me. The 2D Blu-Rays will be enough, thanks.
