A thread to compliment the "Rank the Halo games." thread. So, which one is your favorite, and why? Do you prefer campaign or multiplayer?

Even though its not out yet I put up Black Ops for completeness sake.

Call of Duty 4 was a revelation in single player campaign design and story-telling, for a FPS anyway. And it wasn't just more "storm the beach/bunker killing the never-ending waves of Nazis," or, "Move through the jungle killing Viet Cong" that I'd seen so many times before.

Modern Warfare 2 is a good game, and takes CoD4's excellent multi-player to the next step in a natural evolution, but, for me, the single player campaign rings a bit hollow. They took everything that was great about CoD4 and said "if we just give people more of the same, but twice as much of it, that will be perfect". That's not a bad thing, mind you, but it doesn't get points for originality.

I don't think I could really pick one as my favourite, as they all have their own pros and cons.

The campaign on COD4 is fantastic, but when I first played it on the PS3 I didn't play the MP.
World at War had a great campaign, but it was slightly marred by the ridiculous grenade spam on Veteran. The online play was great - especially the War game mode (which I hope returns in Black Ops), but having played the Ricochet game mode, and with MW2's host migration, playing it again seemed a bit of a backwards step.
Modern Warfare 2 is a better all-round game, with a decent campaign, fun Spec-Ops, and addictive multiplayer.

Having said that, I'm really expecting Black Ops to nail it. If they can take the best bits of World at War and Modern Warfare 2, they'll have one hell of a game. Add to that the Wager matches, Combat training, Create-a-Class 2.0, Co-Op, Theater mode, and the new points system, and I think Black Ops has the potential to be the best COD game to date.

CoD 1 was brilliant and CoD:UO added to the awesome with the Bunker Assault mode and tanks.

CoD2 has a good SP campaign, but is a bit samey. can't comment on MP, it won't run on my PC (don't ask me, dunno)

CoD4 also has a brilliant SP campaign, but also can't play MP.

MW2 has a brilliant SP campaign and i love MP (except for the lack of dedicated servers and how FUCKING SLOW it can be to migrate hosts when 90% of the players are lagging like hell.)

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare because it took the franchise two a new level by giving it a more fleashed out multiplayer and an original story single player that was just kick ass. However its a pity COD is now just a run of the mill franchise charging more for less content. :(

    After that I would rank...

COD 2 - Superb SP, Long and almost as epic as MW's one though online pretty vanilla.
    COD 1
    COD: WAW
    COD: MW 2

    COD 3 Plain sucks.

Despite its flaws I think MW2 is the best. The multi is just too addicting. I loved the original CoD with expansion, that was a fantastic multiplayer game when played with 32 players on large maps.. COD4 was pretty epic as well, but I was surprised that I ended up only putting like 20 hours into multiplayer. I picked up the PC version of that a while back and didn't really like what people were doing on the servers. Seemed like everything was 'hardcore' mode and with a ridiculously high number of players playing. I love large amounts of players, but not on maps that small.

On MW2 I have over 200 hours on Xbox and I think I'm over 300 on PC now... that's a lot of value for my dollar even if I did pay full price twice and bought map packs for both!

I know the main selling point now is Online but remembe the days when a game actually had to give a solid decent lengthed single player. I wish COD games will take the MOH approach and have two different teams work on the game SP/MP. I feel like am being forced out by Activision because am not someone whose going to spend half the jacked up price of the full game later down the line buying all the DLC to go online with.

But that's your choice, really. It's not like World at War, where the DLC was included in all playlists, meaning you got booted out of a lobby if you didn't have the right map pack. MW2 disables the DLC if you, or anyone in your party, doesn't have the DLC, putting you in playlists that solely include the maps that shipped with the game. Therefore you aren't forced to buy the DLC to fully enjoy the game. I imagine the same thing will happen with Black Ops.

Same here, I'm creeping up to the 21 day mark now. Definitely got my money's worth out of MW2.

Of those options, and since I haven't tried Black Ops yet, MW2 gets the vote- though really I still love Finest Hour the best...

i noticed Finest Hour and Big Red One were missing...which considering the unreleased Black Ops is included is absolutely shocking.

Well sorry but I never heard of those before. Modern Warfare was my first COD and I've only played 4,5, and 6. I've never seen or played CODs 1,2, or 3 I just assumed they must exist due to the fact that MW is number 4.

I've played bits and pieces of many of the COD titles but the only one I've ever finished is Modern Warfare, so I'm voting for that one by default. I haven't played the Treyarch entries or MW2 but am certainly looking forward to Black Ops.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but it makes no sense to include a game that isn't going to be released for 2 more months, yet not take two minutes to check Wikipedia for a full series list.

    ^ Agreed.

Can't really rank the CoD titles (besides the fact that they're not all listed in the poll) because I haven't played CoD 3, the first MW and World at War. CoD 1 & 2 were great singleplayer titles, MW2's SP is great as well (although it is short). In terms of multiplayer, none of them really managed to engage me over any significant amount of time.

OK so I checked wikipedia and Finest Hour and Big Red One are the console versions of the PC COD 1 and 2. Are they really that different that they need to be separated from their PC versions? I can't change the poll options now but I guess Finest Hour and Big Red One can be included under COD 1 and COD 2, respectively.

Anyway I hope this doesn't degrade the thread I just thought it would be fun to read about everyone's opinions about their favorite Call of Duty regardless of the poll.

    Ditto.

COD 1 is just a solid WWII shooter with some kickass mission design. The other WWII games in the series don't quite match it, and the MW series just doesn't interest me.

The original Modern Warfare? I completely agree. :D

All Ghillied Up/One Shot, One Kill still remains one of my favorite video game sequences. Add the flawless cinematic presentation and the smooth gameplay, and CoD4 easily tops my list.

Not having played CODs 1-3 and therefore not being able to comment on them I'm going to go with COD 4. The campaign was excellent with exciting, intense, fun missions. The multiplayer was the best I have played and (for me) much more exciting then Halo because of creating customized classes and because people took CODs multiplayer less seriously than Halo's. It was so fun to select your own starting gun and having such a wide variety to choose from. And you could give it different sights, camo, and have lots of perks to choose from.

COD 5 was fun to play because you got to use all the WW II guns and it is the only WW II game I have so that is something to me. The campaign is fun but the graphics are worse then in COD 4 and I didn't like the multiplayer too much because it was basically the same as COD 4's multiplayer, just with worse graphics and WW II guns. I thought it paled in comparison to MW.

COD 6 is also a great game but of course without COD 4 it wouldn't exist. Some problems with it were that the campaign felt a bit short and too easy (its the only COD I have completed veteran on). None of the missions were truly epic or memorable (besides Cliffhanger) and it does not have the same sense of urgency as COD 4.

With COD 4 there was this sense of urgency of trying to avert WW III. The missions had a tension about them that I just didn't get from COD 6. For example, I get a much bigger rush out of trying to get to the control room to abort the nukes and the frantic car chase that follows then Russia invading America or chasing Shepard.

Again with the missions, I really love the two sniper missions in COD 4 and the AC-130 one. There aren't really any missions I could play over and over repeatedly in COD 6 aside from Cliffhanger. The Spec ops challenges are fun and my favorite is the Chernobyl sniper one but again that wouldn't be great if it wasn't based off the already great sniper mission in COD 4.

Black ops looks fun but from the gameplay footage I've seen a bit underwhelming. The graphics look comparatively bad, just like they did in COD 5. Not terrible, but just worse than in MW 1 and 2. I fear the campaign will be short as the COD series shifts towards multiplayer geared instead of campaign. Regardless I will still (hopefully) get it for christmas and love it anyway.

if you bothered to read the wiki page on the CoD series, you'd be able to see that FH and BR1 are not just 'console ports'. BR1 is a completely seperate game to the PC CoD2 since it's about the US 1st Infantry Division ('The Big Red One') and has no Soviet or British campaigns. FH has a British campaign in North Africa and the American campaign is set around Aachen and Remagen. Both completely different to CoD1 which has its British campaigntake place in Northern Europe, whilst the American one is mostly in France and Austria.

Apparently there are a lot more Call of Dutys out there then I expected. :)

Maybe I can make a new thread and merge this with it. So are any of the other expansion packs considered separate games entirely?
