Overused Internet Comments

I'm getting tired of FML, just because of the overly mundane situations people use it in. I don't like it when people quote someone's post and then just say, "This." Ugh that is so irritating!
That irritates me too. I just don't understand why they can't be bothered to expand on the original post. Posting "this" and nothing else serves no other purpose then to "signify" that poster was there and that they agree while lending nothing else significant to the discussion. For the most part, it is a "dead" post.

It isn't completely pointless though. There are often situations where I don't have anything to add but I really want to let someone know that there are people reading who agree with them. So "I agree" or "this" is really all that's needed. It's the message board version of nodding your head during a conversation. You don't have a point to make, you're just showing support.

Of course, the problem is that it's over used which makes it annoying but it isn't completely useless.

Wordfail--er, I mean, Wordforge has some kind of comments function that allows users to add something like "Goliath agrees with this" to a post. That's one possible alternative to quoting a post with "this".

- "First!" -

Great, now say something useful.

- "Am I the only one...?" (usually followed by a completely mundane or popular thing lots of people have done or liked) -

No, no you're not. You have to follow that up with something pretty outlandish for you to be the only one on a board of thousands to enjoy it.

- "I'm surprised no one has mentioned __________ yet." -

Someone probably has. Read back through the thread before saying this.

- Correcting a minor grammatical or spelling error that doesn't interfere with understanding what the person is saying -

Frequently followed up by the person posting the correction making their own grammar or spelling mistake in the same post or a subsequent post in the same thread. If you're going to be annoying and do this, at least proofread your own posts first.

- "Actually..."

Often followed up by something that neither corrects nor contradicts what the person was saying.

Do you have any more?
TL;DR

;)

I believe that's a feature of the reputation system, which is likely never going to be activated here (thank God.)

That's not even what bothers me about it really. If someone just posted "I agree" I wouldn't mind. But somehow just the word "this" seems pretentious and annoying. I have no idea why it bothers me so much.

One comment that I dislike and have luckily not heard spoken in real life but I see on the internet all the time: meh.

You don't hear it in real life because we have non-verbal ways to communicate this reaction to the others we are talking with (like frowning). When your'e stuck in a message board with only text (and those new-fangled emoticons, we didn't even have those in the old days of usenet and the mailing lists) you have to find ways to communicate these reactions using text.

Thus, "meh", "LOL", smilies and emoticons were born out of the need to communicate more efficiently over the wires.

Oh, and someone mentioned Geordi's gif:
Misc

I just told my 12-year-old son to stop acting so "emo".

Erm, could somebody shoot me, please?

^ BANG!

It isn't completely pointless though.
It does serve a purpose but I will usually skip a post if it contains just an emoticon, initials or one word to get to the good stuff. I guess I just expect to much. :rommie: It is a character flaw of mine that I have never been able to put to rest. Bad KITTY!

 Yeah. My problem and your problem with the practice is on two separate planets.

Comparing anything to Hitler or Nazism in a serious manner. That shit is old.

"I heard Obama is going to raise our taxes. I swear, he's worse than Hitler."

To say that in jest is funny--or at least it could be funny. To say it and mean it is just fucking sad and I'm tired of seeing it.

Old.

(Edit: To elaborate, IMO "old" is overused since on the internet, everything that has been around for more than a couple of seconds is considered "old".)

See Godwin's Law for this. It is almost inevitable.

Yes, I'm well aware of Godwin's Law. I think it's made things worse because now people go out of their way to do it just so they can set up someone else to say "Godwin'd!"

No, that's called "good parenting". Emo should be discouraged.

;)

 Oh, absolutely, but that doesn't excuse my using intrawebz lexicon, especially since I forbid my kids to use textspeak when they text me.
Also good parenting :techman:
Not allowing youth to evolve is good parenting? -EVERY generation has done this (it's just the first time it's digital) and it is a way to set themselves apart from old people -a necessary part of growing up actually- and forbidding them to use this 'language of youth' in your presence is the perfect way to shut yourself out of their lives!

(Everything in moderation though.)

One of my pet peeves is the use of multiple exclamation points. It makes us all look like teenage girls!!!!!

Multiple question marks are pretty silly, too, don't you think???

Well, it's easier than typing the mark and then typing the code for some emoticon but it has the same effect:

True, but emoticons are superfluous (fun, but superfluous) anyway. It's even easier to leave them off.

"allowing youth to evolve" and "forgetting how to spell" are two entirely different beasts that should not be confused.

Oh, this. I was fortunate enough not to have encountered this kind of behavior up until now.

Okay, I can see "l33t" being a bastardized "elite", but what does "w00t" mean, please? What? Woooo? It sounds like "what" but it's never used that way.

These things have been bugging me for about a decade:lol:
