They should of done George Tekei's show.

It's not too late to make it. George is still around.

I don't know if he could carry a series but I see nothing wrong with a made for TV movie.

Ugh, no thanks. For all the finger pointing at Shatner, Takei's ego is far larger than his acting talent. Even now, if a new show were to be produced, I'd rather see an unknown ACTOR play the lead in a new series rather than watch Mr. "I'm singlehandedly responsible for the entire road system in California" Takei strutting across the screen.

--Incidentally, if you don't catch the above reference about Takei and the roads, read his autobiography. It's chuck full of all the wonderful things he is done which (based upon the tone of his book) makes him better than everyone else.

"Whoaaaaaaow!"

Oh my!
;)

I look at "Flashback" as a sort of example of how Excelsior would work as a show. And it didn't do it for me; I thought the acting was sub-par (especially Grace Lee Whitney's performance which I've seen high school kids doing a better job of acting).
Absolutely true. Takei was as stiff as a board. He was... captivating because of his TOS status. But that was about it. No, if Takei could take a leading role, we'd have seen him in something else. He's a scratch C-list actor at best. Great for small parts, but definitely no lead. Did you see him in "World Enough and Time", the New Voyages/Phase II production? He was passable, but definitely not lead material. So to the OP's request, I'd have to give a thumbs down.

Actually, I loved him in World Enough and Time, but I agree Flashback was crap. But Flashback may have been crap largely because it was made by the Voyager folks, who had lots of experience producing crap.

I agree, that he was enjoyable in "World Enough and Time"... but I didn't feel he exhibited the talent required for a leading role. Of course, what you see is a combination of the actor and the director working together... who knows if there's a certain kind of directing that would bring out the best in Takei enough for more, but I've not seen enough evidence of it.

Wow, no love for Voyager on your deck. ;)

I thought he did a great job in "World Enough and Time" but it was a guest-starring role that had a lot of meat to it. I've always wondered if another actor could've done more with it.

None whatsoever!

Takei would not have been required to carry the entire show alone - he was ok in Flashback and STVI. I agree that Sulu is quite wooden compared to Kirk and Grace was about 70, and clearly not up to coping with a lead role on a regular basis. The show would have worked better if the focus had been split and the key characters had been younger, more junior officers with Sulu overseeing them. The concept still deserved to see the light of day to test the water. It would have been fun.

Takei was fun in TOS, but he simply can't carry an entire show as the captain.

Although if you did it these days people might just tune in for the cringe factor.

No, actually the specific actors and characters are more important in many ways than the story in getting an audience to embrace and follow a television series - any television series. Particularly the actors.

yup: Shat, Nimoy, and Kelley really make ST a lot of what it is.

I like VOY pretty well, but I think it could have been a lot better with about 50% dif. actors with no change to script. And Bakula seemed REALLY bland to me to be a captain/lead/hero of a Trek show.

All my opinion of course.

I found him terribly bland in the beginning. And seriously lacking a military stance. His attitude was more happy-go-lucky and "let's bring the dog along too!" Thankfully the directors/producers reshaped him later on and at times, Bakula does a good job. He's very believable and carries the right emotion/attitude at important points. But it just wasn't consistent... That, coupled with performance issues with some other actors on the show, is what probably taxed the audience most. Only the diehards were keeping it alive, so ultimately it was canceled. The way it ended was a huge cop out. :(

Everybody know the Wussians inwented the roads!

I would love to see a few made-for-tv movies featuring Sulu and crew. George is a great actor, and him being a Captain was my favorite part of Star Trek 6. he wore the uniform well, and was very commanding. It's to late to do a series now, but a few made for tv movies for a channel like Sci-Fi would be good. I bet they could even get Christian Slater in them (it's been a few years; make him either first officer or a senior officer.) As for Grace, I would leave her out of it of it, unless it's just a cameo.

The 80's was such a different era than the 60's. Making TNG as it was was the right thing to do. A Sulu series would of been very dated very quickly.
Plus I agree that Takei isn't a lead actor, despite what he thinks.

I'd still like to of seen a series set in the post-ST 6 time frame. There's a nice big chunk of history between then and TNG's time to explore.

Be it a series about the Enterprise-B or the Excelsior (under different captains) or the Excalibur or some random Miranda class that gets into trouble a lot...
