Keys.. is something of an odd one out. Many fans dislike it, but I am partial to it at times. It does have a real epic feel to it, and the way the quest for the keys is spread across whole different areas is practically a blueprint for The Key to Time quest that Tom Baker would later undertake (another story-arc that many fans like to hate). Oh and I agree with you on Susan - she always annoyed the crap out of me.

Interestingly, many six-episode serials of the time tended to suffer in the latter episodes, however - much as I have little time for much of The Keys of Marinus, its fifth episode is the jewel shining above all else (although episode 2 is a strong contender, being a story in it's own right).

Unfortunately neither the opening installment nor the conclusion impress at all which puts the whole lot into the incinerator pile for me. And to think other "epic travelogues" failed to survive when this one did...

I've seen "The Caves of Androzani" and while it's not without its cheesy, unconvincing moments (like that shoehorned in dragon monster and the main villain killing a rival by pushing him into a bad matte painting) it is a brilliant, brilliant story and not since "Children of Earth" have I seen a story steeped in so much banal evil and selfishness, and as with "The Parting of the Ways" just about everybody dies (squabbling over a resource that gets buried).
Did you really have to review the best story ever with reference to complete rubbish?

I think he makes some valid points, and has obviously done a lot of thinking about how that story compares to others he's seen.

I recently listened to the 6th Doctor/Peri audio adventure 'Slipback,' and watched what was left of 'Shada.'

I plan on watching (since I have a little time on my hands):

*Robots of Death
*The Krotons
*Mawdryn Undead
*Terminus
*Black Orchid
*Revenge of the Cybermen

...and some other DW audio adventures....

Finally got around to Episode Four of "Masque of Mandragora" over the weekend. It was good stuff. I particularly like how Hieronymous said, "Mandragora," rolling the "r" just enough to give it some dramatic flair. Beautiful costumes, particularly on Sarah Jane. Although the finale seemed a little upbeat, considering that a dozen people had just been murdered at the party.

Has anyone else seen the special features? There's a standard "making of" one that's good, but also what seems to be a parody "making of." I didn't get about 99% of the jokes, but I guffawed at: "Rosalyn de Winter: Insect Movement" in the credits.

Well I've finished watching PAradise Towers (in explanation I borrowed it on VHS about two years ago and recently found it covered in dust under the telly!)

Oh dear...sometimes it really is easy to see why the show was cancelled.

Panto style acting, cheesy music... the worst thing is that it still looks like a lot of money is on view here. The sets are good, and as lousy as the cleaners are I bet they weren't cheap to make.

And so much doesn't make sense...are the Kangs all girls because all boys were vcalled up, what even the kids? Why are the rezzies cannibals when there seems to be plenty of food around? And how do Kang crossbows destroy cleaners?

And the least said about Richard Briars the better...

On the plus side McCoy is, for the most part, very good, and I love his comment about how horrible it would be to live your life by a rule book. The Kangs are interesting as well and Pex is an interesting character.

When Big Finish did the 'Return to the Web Planet' CD, there was an e-mail sent round everyone involved saying 'Remember to ensure Rosalyn de Winter is credited for Insect Movement'. One of the younger people involved took it seriously.;)

Given The Invasion a watch. To be honest, I was quite disappointed. It had its moments, but it had its dull stretches too. It's a bit daft really. On the upside, Troughton had the same thing Tom had, whereby even in a dull story he's always interesting to watch. I guess it suffers in a way many older stories sometimes do, whereby it's just a bit overlong. Definitely prefer The Mind Robber. I think 2.5 out of 5.

I LOVED the way the master computer talked in "The Invasion." He sounded so pathetic, like a dripping wet billy goat or something. The animated episodes were good, too.

Like a lot of other stories of the period, there's an awful lot of escaping/being recaptured/escaping again/being recaptured again. It'd be interesting to see if the capture/story ratio declined over the years.

It's been a while since I watched it, but I also remember Kevin Stoney's performance as Tobias Vaughn standing out, and the way his underling never got things right.

I just watched the Ghost Light...

OMG!! I was not impressed.. from the weird and silly haunted house effects, to the cheesy lightning, and the strange story.. it was just not a good episode..

There were times that i couldn't get what Ace and the Doc said to each other cause they were mumbling.. and then there was the light, which sounded like Stuart from MADTV... just awful...

I think that this serial doesn't deserve any thumbs up..nope, it just doesn't hit the mark..and as others have stated, it is not hard to see how the series was canceled..

Watched The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. Heh, it's great. One of the best McCoys. 4 stars, or even more.

I am going to remain optimistic and check that one out.. so far, the only doctor who episodes for the 7th that I like are the curse of Fenric and the remembrance of the Daleks...

That's fair enough. They're easily my favourite 2 7th Doctor stories as well. Of course, back then there were only 4 stories a year, so if there was a dud then that was one quarter. Still, I think those last two McCoy seasons are pretty decent overall.

Anyway, being in a DW watching mood, I've been able to fit in another: Kinda. And it's terrific. I don't rate the Fifth Doctor era very highly, but this is easily one of his best; probably second only to Caves. Even Tegan and Adric put in reasonable performances. The whole thing is almost Shakespearian. A real triumph. ***** from me. Next up for me is Snakedance; Moffat's favourite.

What's Slipback like? Any good?

From what I understand it was made during the time DW was going through changes, and the cast members did it to generate interest in the franchise. (Being that this was the Colin Baker era, this was during the time his place as the Doctor was decided upon).

Personally, I enjoyed it for what it was; it gets kind of muddled when other characters come in and (being a radio show) one has to pay attention.

Others I've watched recently:
*Terminus (the only episode I found Nyssa attractive)

*Four to Doomsday (always was a favorite episode of mine, even though there are some questionable scenes...i.e. The Doctor in the vacuum of space without a suit on, and the obvious 'effects' when Bygone reveals himself).

*The Ark

Currently watching:
*The Rescue

Sidenotes:

Some have mentioned 'Remembrance of the Daleks' as the best 7th Doctor episode.

It is.

I think all actors portrayed the Doctor well, but it's just by the time McCoy came into the picture, the stories were bad....and even the music was horrible.

The only other McCoy episode I don't mind watching multiple times is 'The Happiness Patrol'....despite the horrible, horrible costumes. Although, I think the idea of the Kandyman is brilliant and hilarious....

"Gilbert!!! Gilbert!!":guffaw:

I do want to check out 'The Greatest Show in the Galaxy' based on USS Bones' recommendation...

Being a raving insomniac, I've been able to fit in another classic DW in record time. Watched Snakedance, like I said I would. It's another terrific story. Perhaps not quite as good as Kinda (not much is), but a great story in its own right. Janet Fielding puts in a very good performance (not sure if it was here that the theory she had a million acting lessons just before Arc of Infinity was posited, but it makes sense). The sets and production values are very good, and I love the ending; no cheerfully setting off again in the Tardis, but instead Tegan crying and being all sad. 4 or 5 stars, probably 4.5. I think I can confidently say Caves of Androzani, Kinda, Snakedance, and Earthshock are the best of Davison's era.

I started watching Ghostlight about 18 months ago...I still have the third episode to go. I find it really, really bad--yet it might be the most polorising ep of Who ever because a lot of people really love it.

It feels like the first draft of a very clever story. So I think it's fair to say that the people who love it fell in love with the idea, while the people who hate it can't see past the amateurish execution. They both have a point, but I definitely belong to the second group.
