Meld vs. Repentence.

Well sentencing vs. punishment.

Was he to be incarcerated for X number of years and then executed, or was he being held while they were building a gallows so that he didn't run away? It's question of red tape.

You wouldn't need death row if you could trust criminals to show up for their own executions when they were arranged to happen... HEY!? That's an episode of TOS! ..AND TNG!

But holding prisoners till execution is just gravy because just because you're not ready to cut their head off with something sharp does it really mean they have to languish in a cell? Well actually it does, which is why they invented the system of Law they di in the 2000 AD Comics.

In that mind, Suder wasn't planning on being held for X number of years either, which cannot be at all legal. he was given life via the captains discretion and not a day in court.
Can we stick to real world examples and not stuff from the Powerpuff Girls or Comics? ;)

Well, we are discussing Star Trek. That's not exactly a real world example.
I'm very well aware of that but I don't read comics or watch the powerpuff girls and I'd like to address stuff I can relate too. It helps when you're having a conversation or wish to rebuttal.

I was being fancy.

2000 AD is the weekly publication of Judge Dredd.

Stalone movie from the mid 90s?

The judiciary given guns and motor cycles with the legal authority to execute criminals on site/sight.

Yeah, Judge Dredd is a pop culture touchstone that you should be able to freely reference amongst nerds without too much fear- but good summation, Guy!

If when I was born, my country was a member of the British Empire... Doesn't that mean Britain dumped me? Surely I used to have some sort of defacto British Citizenship while I was still waddling around in diapers?

Judge Dredd is a very English Comic book despite being set in America.

Diane Lane makes me squee.

She would have made a pleasant alternate captain Ransom.

To proove that Janeway was always right, Ransom had to be always wrong (until he agreed with Janeway), so if Lane were Girl-Ransom (And even Rudy with someone on his cre... Ruby Ransom? Oh smurf me, that's just horrible.) she would have a very different crew fratenization policy which went horribley wrong and in so proved janeway that she was always right.

What was the chances that Max and Rudy were big gay lovers?

It would explain how Ransom was lead so easily not by his nose into these turgid works of agregiousness but by something 4 feet below his nose like a lad taking his dog for a walk.
