Return of the Jedi Deleted Scene...Luke building his lightsaber!

Yeah I'm pretty sure Luke didn't know how to build his own lightsaber unless Yoda told him offscreen. I've always liked to think that Luke used his own technical skills (much like Anakin) and was guided by the Force to build it. I do wonder what he used to power it though.

Maybe Obi-Wan kept some spare crystals around. That, and according to KOTOR, they could use Krayt Dragon pearls or whatever from the native Krayt dragons of Tattoonie. Hence the big skeleton in the beginning of ANH. But really, who knows.
Just going off the NPR episodes (which I posted a link to up thread) Ben must of have had some kit laying about. At the least stuff to upkeep his and Anakin's sabers. Plus stuff that he had intended to give to Luke when he was old enough. So maybe Luke just kitbashed one together from spare parts.

And do we know what happened to Qui-Gon's saber? Maybe Obi-Wan had it and Luke pulled the crystal out of it.

I don't think it's been touched on what happened to Qui-Jon's lightsaber...I'm sure that Obi-Wan either kept it or gave it to the Jedi Archives or something before he built the saber he used afterward.

Next time post the embedded youtube video instead of just the link.

No reason for this scene to be in the movie.
I'll go you a few further. No reason for any of the pre-Sarlaac scenes to be in ROTJ. Just write a new crawl saying all the heroes were captured during the rescue attempt, and that the Rebel Marines would totally have gone in and gotten Han out without anyone being the wiser, but that was their R&R week, so watcha gonna do? :p

I thought it interesting that Luke dressed entirely in black for the film...quite the different costume for a Jedi not to mention that Luke had primarily worn white in the previous two films.

Apparently Mark Hamill even mentioned that to George Lucas. He said, "I look pretty similar to Vader or the Emperor", and Lucas said, "That's the point". Apparently it was supposed to mirror his gradual descent or lure to the Dark Side in the film.

People are surprised that Luke's black robes are reminiscent of the Emperor?

I've thought that was the point since I was 7 years old. To further the idea that Luke could actually go to the Dark Side.

I think originally Luke wearing black was supposed to be what the Jedi wore. The robes Obi-Wan had in ANH were just what a lot of people on Tatooine were wearing, but apparently Lucas decided to change that, or he just plain forgot. After all, Obi-Wan was in hiding on Tatooine, so it would make sense that he was trying to blend in as much as possible.

There is also the other deleted scene in Jedi when you see them returning to their ships in a sand storm after the skiff battle.

Yeah, the sandstorm scene. That's a famous one. It was the first scene shot for ROTJ and it also was the only time they used the exterior Falcon set. Some of the dialogue was moved to the scene where Luke and the Falcon are flying off of Tatooine (ie, Han thanking Luke).

Maybe lightsaber building isn't that hard. A 5th grade shop class student on a backwoods planet like Tatooine could make one.

Basically, it doesn't matter how Luke made it. Vader's later dialouge covers it, anyway. "I see you constructed yourself a new lightsaber."

It's like the scene in the restored version of THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY where Tuco recruits his goons to go after "Blondie". It's neat they filmed it, but it's padding that was easily edited out. Most of the audience can surmise what happened.

It's much like Vader's shuttle scene in the Special Edition of ESB...we can figure out Vader got to his Star Destroyer the same way he got to Bespin (which wasn't shown either). It would've made more sense to restore this ROTJ scene to its film (assuming it's all vintage footage), than to have added that hanger scene in ESB (concocted from ROTJ footage).

I do like how Luke and Artoo are reminiscent of Leia giving him the plans in ANH. It helps things come full circle a little.

with some minor tweaks to Vader's dialogue, I liked the scene. As for the "surprise" on the skiff... that's less important story wise than this moment.
It wasn't to moviegoers back in 1983. It made the skiff battle a highlight moment because very few knew Artoo was the Luke's ace-in-the-hole all that time.

I guess I agree, but...

ROTJ is so badly focused as it is. It has many problems. 'Thrilling the audience' or 'not thrilling them' in the opening is the least of the film's problems because, well the first quarter of the film is just padding and has so little to do with the rest of the film (save for the fact they got Han back) that in defending it just reinforces everything that's wrong with this film. Even Lucas admits that he had to come up with padding/ I think the re-emergence of the Jedi, and the pathos between Vader and Luke is far more important and interesting than a single action scene depicting a largely-botched rescue attempt. Luke should be ashamed of himself for not being able to get Han out easier. Also, the deleted scene gives a visual glimpse - through imagery- of how close the dark side of the force and the light side are.
