Return of the Jedi Deleted Scene...Luke building his lightsaber!

His costume made the most sense. In Star Wars, Obi-Wan wore the same style of clothing as Owen and other people on Tatooine. It was desert clothing. Even the Jawa's wore something similar.

Luke's Jedi costume could be more along the lines of what a Jedi Knight wore. However at the end of Jedi and the prequels it seems all Jedi Knights wear desert clothing. I'm not quite sure why that is.

Yep, I think Lucas forgot that Obi wan was disguising himself in the first movie and so went on to make the Jedis all dress like that. Ugh.

I thought it interesting that Luke dressed entirely in black for the film...quite the different costume for a Jedi not to mention that Luke had primarily worn white in the previous two films.

He was mourning the loss of his "girlfriend" aka "Miss Mos Eisley" aka his right hand.

The black costume was the uniform of a jedi.

They even had designs for it in the art of tpm before lucas changed his mind to have something more reminiscent of Obi-Wan's and Anakin's Tatoonine robes in ROTJ.

It's interesting that Luke looks just like the Emperor in that initial appearance.

Of course thats because they are both meant to evoke Obi-Wan. The Emperor's robes are described in the script of ROTJ as "a hooded cloak similar to the one Ben wears, except that it is black" and Luke's robes: "a robe similar to Ben's".

I suppose the Emperor was meant to be from Tatooine as well?

I'll forgive Lucas cutting this out if, when he reinserts it (with more appropriate dialogue), he completely excises the Jedi Rocks scene.

Before they release it they should add Liam Neeson in ghost form hovering over Luke's shoulder going, "Luke, listen to me! I know you have no idea who the hell I am but use the diatum power cell! It gives you a straight +5 and that beats 1d8 on average! Luke, that's not - Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!"

Was that scene real? I knew it had been storyboarded but I never knew they shot it.

Very cool scene. Though I think Luke's reveal works fine. It does set a dark mood though.

It was part of the movie so late in post-production that John Williams even scored it (the music has been on the SE CD release since 1997)!

What also no one has brought up yet is that I think this scene would be the only other scene in the film where we see Luke without his black glove over his droid hand.

There was another cut shot from the Jabba's palace sequence in RotJ as well...I had the RotJ storybook and it had a picture of Luke hanging from the ceiling grating above the rancor pit. Must've jedi-jumped up there I guess.

I was looking at my cousin's copy of the storybook for ANH, and it has stills from the famous unused shots of Luke watching the space battle and talking to Biggs, as well as a shot of Threepio in the desert with a giant dragonlike skeleton behind him.

^Don't remember one from KOTOR, but TFU has one.

Lucas actually enjoys crushing EU fanboys souls by including stuff like that in the higher canon.

Anyway, I want to say I've read stories, probably Bantam-era, where Jedi constructed them by hand.

And Luke wasn't trained by anyone in the manufacture of a lightsaber. He just had to figure it out on his own, right? So he does it the best way he knows how and that's why his is so huge and ungainly compared to the other film examples.

Ah, The Force Unleashed, that's the game!

And wasn't it in the novelization or something that Obi-Wan told Luke to go to his old place on Tatoonie to find the parts and holocrons needed to learn and build a lightsaber? I remember that from somewhere.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Luke didn't know how to build his own lightsaber unless Yoda told him offscreen. I've always liked to think that Luke used his own technical skills (much like Anakin) and was guided by the Force to build it. I do wonder what he used to power it though.

I read somewhere that Lucas' idea for dressing the Jedi in the prequels is that the Jedi purposely dress themselves to look like humble people of the galaxy, and not elite warriors. Take it as you will, that's what I read to justify it.

Maybe Obi-Wan kept some spare crystals around. That, and according to KOTOR, they could use Krayt Dragon pearls or whatever from the native Krayt dragons of Tattoonie. Hence the big skeleton in the beginning of ANH. But really, who knows.
