Return of the Jedi Deleted Scene...Luke building his lightsaber!

Nah, I think it was better this scene was cut. It takes away from the surprise element when Luke jumps off the skiff plank. Back then, nobody knew what was going to happen. I remember the audience in the theatre going wild when it was discovered Artoo had launched over a new lightsaber to Luke...

I know the scene was included in the novelization of Return... but thankfully, I didn't read it until after the movie.

Sigh ... so why wasn't this included in the first place? To build tension for Luke's reveal in Jabba's palace? I say stick it back in, but change Vader's dialogue a bit. It's too similar to his lines at the climax of ESB and before he turns Luke over to the Emperor in ROTJ.

I'll forgive Lucas cutting this out if, when he reinserts it (with more appropriate dialogue), he completely excises the Jedi Rocks scene. And burns it.

And it could actually add to R2's daring rescue by making everyone wonder where the hell Luke's lightsaber went in between this scene and his capture.

Wouldn't that scene now ruin all lightsaber construction mentioned in the EU? Every other time a jedi builds one they only use the force or something, all the pieces floating in the airs coming together.

Didn't one of the video games show a scene like that? One of the Kotors maybe?

Nonetheless, cool scene.

^Don't remember one from KOTOR, but TFU has one.

Lucas actually enjoys crushing EU fanboys souls by including stuff like that in the higher canon.

Anyway, I want to say I've read stories, probably Bantam-era, where Jedi constructed them by hand.

And Luke wasn't trained by anyone in the manufacture of a lightsaber. He just had to figure it out on his own, right? So he does it the best way he knows how and that's why his is so huge and ungainly compared to the other film examples.

"Luke, Luuuke...pick up the call, I know you're there...*sigh*...join me on the daaarkside."

You'd think for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK's anniversary year, they'd have dug up a deleted scene from it. No bad wampa footage?

^Nice.

I was hoping Ashton Kutcher was going announce they were putting stuff like "Bring my shuttle" back in, and the rest of the stupid changes they made to the OT were all part of a really long, drawn out episode of Punk'd.

Sigh...remember that Luke builds his lightsabre post Jedi Purge and doesn't have access to the crystal cave where the Jedi went for their power cells and saber construction. Not to mention that wasn't even created when this was filmed.

I vote with the "good idea to leave it out" crowd. But it's fun to see actual new OT footage after all this time! :bolian:

I miss Luke and the gang...Why oh why doesn't Lucas roll the dice and recast the OT characters and continue the story and of course not have anything personally to do with it himself in any way, shape or form? :rommie:

Turn it all over to JJ Abrams. He knows how to successfully recast iconic characters and he is definitely squelching an impulse to interject Star Wars into Star Trek. So far he's managed to restrict himself to an Ewok-ish creature here and there, but it's healthier all around if he has a better way to get it out of his system.

There was another cut shot from the Jabba's palace sequence in RotJ as well...I had the RotJ storybook and it had a picture of Luke hanging from the ceiling grating above the rancor pit. Must've jedi-jumped up there I guess.

No reason for this scene to be in the movie.

Just like there was no reason to put the Jabba scene back into A New Hope where they just repeat the Greedo dialog from earlier.

C.E. Evans is right about the reveal that's in the movie. Imagine how the audience would've reacted to Darth Maul's double-edged lightsaber if it hadn't been given away in the trailers.

I think it looked great. Luke looked cool with the hood up, but yeah, Vader saying "Luuuke! Luuuuke!" would become some new internet meme if this were added to the film.

Good grief, that audience was easily impressed. Fifteen seconds of tinkering with a lightsaber is worthy of cheers?

Just like there was no reason to put the Jabba scene back into A New Hope where they just repeat the Greedo dialog from earlier.

The problem there, I think, is that when they excised the Jabba scene, they evidently rewrote the subtitles in the Greedo scene to convey the same information. What's inexplicable is why Lucas didn't restore the original subtitles when he put the Jabba scene back in, thus avoiding the redundancy.

It was a packed house full of Star Wars fans at a Star Wars convention...how would you expect them to react to something most of them if not all of them had seen before?

You know I think it's a recreation of a deleted scene and not the actual scene. It doesn't make sense. Vader walks down a hallway and then into an elevator in the Emperor's throne room and then he's on a set from The Empire Strikes Back. As scripted the scene was supposed to take place in the Emperor's throne room. I bet they couldn't find that footage, just the dialogue track and had to piece this together from other outtake footage. I don't see them re-building that ESB set for one scene. Also it should be a quick dissolve to Luke like in ESB's telepathic conversation and not a wipe.

I thought it interesting that Luke dressed entirely in black for the film...quite the different costume for a Jedi not to mention that Luke had primarily worn white in the previous two films.

His costume made the most sense. In Star Wars, Obi-Wan wore the same style of clothing as Owen and other people on Tatooine. It was desert clothing. Even the Jawa's wore something similar.

Luke's Jedi costume could be more along the lines of what a Jedi Knight wore. However at the end of Jedi and the prequels it seems all Jedi Knights wear desert clothing regardless of the environment. I'm not quite sure why that is.
