Nice Jennifer Lien Interview

One of the nice (And only good) things about Startrek.com these days is they've been catching up with actors from the various series' you don't normally hear from. Last week it was Alexander Siddig, but today, they posted a very nice interview with Jennifer Lien. It's great to read what she's been up to (I don't want this thread to devolve into a "do you like kes or not" thing that this forum is known for but I will say I really do like Lien), and one thing I found interesting is her career path is studying health and maybe even becoming a nurse. I would have loved if a follow up question would have been something to the effect of "Did Voyager motivate you in taking this direction in your life" mainly because the main storyline early in the series' run was Kes becoming a nurse and learned a lot about health from the Doctor. It was just nice to read.

Nice interview.

Last summer (?) Richard Arnold, the Star Trek historian was at a creation con and had only good things to say about Jen Lien. He also dispelled a lot of unfounded rumors regarding her departure. He noted she was happy out west, raising her family and didn't miss acting all that much, which this interview confirms.

What else did I learn from the "historian" and former president of the Yeoman Rand fan club? That Grace Lee Whitney and I wear the same perfume.

She was a decent character that got swept aside because they wanted to appeal to teenage boys with Jeri Ryan's breasts.

I'm 40 years old & Jeri Ryan's breasts appealed to many in my age bracket as well. ;)

There is no age limit for men or women to enjoy the assets of the human body.

However as the OP said, this isn't a post about Kes vs. Seven.

It's good that Lien finally set the record straight about her contract running out and that she wasn't brutally fired as some would have us believe. Also that it was her choice to discontinue acting in pursuit of a new career and family.

Thank you, Jen for finally speak up on it.
Hopefully these issues can now be put to bed. :bolian:

...and thank you, Tomalak301 for the link.

Good Interview. I'm glad to hear she is doing well also. Though I didn't love the character of Kes, I do like the actress (and think she's beautiful!).

It's such a shame Kes wasn't chosen to continue on the show, I thought her comparatively short lifespan was a fascinating aspect of the character. Her looming mortality would have provided some interesting story ideas.

I think what did the character of Kes in was that she was the only character in the crew with no emotional baggage to over come. So there was very little drama to her, they didn't even give her teen angst.

Not all teens have angst, though.

Her short life span and her mental powers should have been enough to give them a great deal to work with. The writers got lazy.

Maybe but I think they missed a great oppertunity of not showing the culture shock of her coming from a closed society and seeing a whole new "world". Her mental powers & aging is cosmetic, what about developing and exploring the person/personality that is Kes?
I'm not sure if it was lazy but rather they have more to "play with" when writing for the other characters.

Valid point

But, I think she had partly assimilated to being outside her closed society because she had escaped her it. I think showing her having a hard time trying to adjust to people other than Neelix and the Kazon could have been a great storyline, though. So feel you as far as where you're going.

I think it's great that she is considering becoming a nurse. Nurses have super hard jobs and I admire them very much. However, I am glad she lives far away from me. If I ever woke up in a hospital and Jennifer Lien was there caring for me, I would have a serious freak out. "OMG I have finally gone 'round the bend - I'm hallucinating that I'm in Sickbay on Voyager! Ack!" That sort of thing.

I would think that I was in good hands if she wound up being my nurse.

Yes. To clarify. I was making a joke about my own self. Not slagging off on Lien's potential to be a good nurse.

Just making sure that was clear. I don't want Lynx to misunderstand and sic that cat on me. ;)

Nice to see that she's living a happy life, and yes, she seems to be a very nice and friendly person.

It's sad that they did fire her in the rude way they did and the world lost a promising actress. But that's their loss.

If there were anything good which did come out of that, then it's the fact that she realized that there is more in life than acting and that she found a happy life outside and far away from the acting business.

As for the character Kes, they did both the character and the actress unjustice. Since the series is cancelled and Jennifer has quit the acting business, there's nothing to do to the series anymore. What's important now is to have Kes re-instated as a main and important character in the Voyager books. :techman:

I agree. I'd imagine TPTB had a seven year run in mind for Voyager and by setting Kes' life span to 8-10 years probably thought they could explore the aging condition over the course of the series. Too bad they failed and gave up on the character.

I'm glad Jennifer is doing well and has moved on with her life and family.

I think they should have focused more on Kes's personality which was the best and most interesting with the character together with her mental abilities as they were in seasons 1, 2 and 3. The lifespan was a dead end, a mistake from the writers which they probably realized after a while. Therefore it was seldom mentioned.
