Worst performance in a movie

I can't believe nobody has mentioned these yet....

John Travolta in Battlefield Earth.

Kevin Costner in Waterworld.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck in Gigli.

Kevin Costner, again, in The Postman.

It looks like you kind of worked backwards there by picking the 4 worst movies in popular opinion.

I'm not saying they're good performances, but Kevin Costner doesn't deserve to be in there in my opinion.

Poor Shelley Duvall. Kubrick abuses her to the point of a mental breakdown, and people criticize her acting like it's her fault.

And she's ugly.

Dolph Lundgren in Universal Soldier was pretty bad with his delivery of one-liners and monologues.

I thought she was equally atrocious in Popeye, but of course that entire movie was pretty much unwatchable. Her IMDb page says she was in Time Bandits, Roxanne, and Annie Hall, but I haven't seen any of those in a long time. I don't remember her in them, probably because her performance was so forgettable.

As far as ugly actors, don't forget Steve Buscemi and Ernest Borgnine, both of whom I'm a huge fan.

It wasn't a horrible performance by any means, but Edward Norton was clearly slumming it in The Italian Job, probably because he didn't want to make it.

Don't know if anyone here has seen The human centipede, but the two actress Ashley C Williams and Ashlynn Yennie are the worst actress I have ever seen.

^ If you want to talk about the bad performances in the Schumacher Batman movies - I'd have to say Arnold wasn't the worst.

He was bad. However, Uma Thurman, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Silverstone, and George Clooney all did worse jobs.

But the absolute worst actor in those movies was undoubtedly Chris O'Donnell. I'm sure the fact that I hate the character of Robin to begin with has something to do with my hatred of his performance. But, seriously, O'Donnell did nothing with the role.

I think the Nostaglia Critic said it best in his review of Batman & Robin - O'Donnell's every line of dialogue can essentially be replaced with "WAH WAH WAH - I'm a crybaby - WAH WAH WAH!"

Aw, on the contrary, I thought he made a deliciously sleazy villain. I remember watching the movie knowing about the behind the scenes story. I told the friend I watched it with that I thought Norton did a hell of a job for a guy who didn't want to be there.

If Keanu Reeves in Dracula was bad, then Coppola's Dracula started badly, and improved when his character left center stage. Except that when I watched Coppola's Dracula, it was definitely the other way round. I thought part of it was Wynona Ryder was really pretty bad in this movie. Which makes her my nominee for worst performance by a name actress in an A list picture by a reputable director (since nobody is supposed to look at anything but the director's name, we'll ignore the writers and producers.)

Women's roles are commonly underwritten, and actresses are commonly chosen solely for appearance. As a result, performances by actresses are very, very commonly underwhelming.

But if forced to nominate a reputable actor in a big budget movie with a name director, I think I'd go for Jackie Earle Haley in Watchmen. A Clint Eastwood impersonation is not even a characterization, much less a good one. If Haley hasn't got the sense and self respect to bitch about Snyder misdirecting him, he can take responsibility for it. At least, when Kurt Russell did Clint, it was tongue in cheek!

Although, since Much Ado About Nothing has been mentioned, I'm puzzled why Michael Keaton's Dogberry is so easily dismissed from the competition.

Every Single Actor in "Battlefield Earth"..Travolta however just carried the entire mess with him over the cliff...

WHAT?!? That was one of my favourite roles in the movie! I love when Keaton does comedy. His fixation on the word "ass" was unforgettable for being one of the last things I'd expect in a Shakespeare play while also natural and hilarious.

well, I know the guy could kill me twice even before I touch the ground, but I nominate Steven Seagal. His roles are all about the same guy who was a former CIA agent who came into retirement and blablablah ! His face, interpretation, and... Steven Seagal is THE same!

I wanted to nominate Van Damme, but he offered a great performance in JCVD. Worth checking...

Butch

^ But Seagal is fat now, so he's a method actor! :)

In some of his recent direct-to-DVD movies, he has a stunt double AND a dialog looping double!
