I think its hard for fans to understand actors' career choices. But young actresses can make a lot more money making movies than in these TV shows and they know that if they don't branch out while they are fairly young, it will be too late for youth-obsessed Hollywood fame.
Claudia Christian left B5 because she wanted to do a movie - she just wanted part of the season off but the hard-nosed agents couldn't reach agreement in time and then I think everybody blamed everybody else. Terry Farrell chose to leave DS9. Michelle Forbes didn't want to be tied down and it became hard to get her to do guest slots let alone commit to the Kira role in DS9. Andrea Thompson left B5 because she was being offered a lot of guest roles on other shows that she had to keep turning down. Caitlin Brown left because the narn make-up was giving her terrible skin problems.
I would have preferred all these actresses to stay around for longer than they did but I think being abusive about their career choices is hilarious. Fans don't own them! The fact that Crosby returned shows a level of commitment to the franchise (or desperation) that wasn't often seen on the other shows (whether due to the actresses or the producers' sour grapes who knows). Caitlin Brown and Michelle Forbes both agreed to do an episode to give the characters closure and the final episodes of TNG had greater resonance because Crosby and Meaney reprised their roles. Credit where credit is due.
