Oh wow! That turned out massively well. Plus I love the idea of combining deg and Mr. Probert together. His drawings... your modeling skills... awesome and delicious!

Are you going to convert anything else into 3D for him? Anything else nifty you have planned? Any hints you want to drop?

(And looking at the Sphinx, I can't help but wonder what would happen if a big automaker commissioned Mr. Probert to do some concept cars. You know like they used to do back in the 1950's? I would love to see what he would come up with!)

Was it FASA that had a TNG sourcebook version of the Sphinx or something like it that was a bit larger?

Deg - Gorgeous work, as always. Quick question - I know that Mr. Probert has turned at least one of his designs into a plastic model. Is he planning on doing the same in the future with your model? IOW, is this a design for use in developing a model kit?

    Again, fine job! :drool::techman:

    HOLY TOASTED POMEGRANATE CUPCAKES!

dEG, that is phenomenal. It's completely believable and looks like a pickup of the 24th century! I have one grammarnazian nitpick and one humble request. It should be "AN Andrew Probert design" and can we please see some background work on how you built this? At least a mesh?

So, deg, what's it like to be able to use the phrase "my friend Andrew Probert"?

    Thanks much, guys! :)

The other design is for a TV show that Andrew has in mind as a pitch, so I won't be posting that one, at least until I get the OK for him, dilbertman.

This I do not know, Jack. There was no mention of it, and the mesh itself is not modeled closed-and-sealed for use with rapid proto-typing. It's just for fun and pretty pictures as far as I know, as Andrew said he would love to see me build and render some of his designs, then asked if I'd be interested, and this is one of two he sent me after I emailed back saying; SURE, I'd be honored, dude!

You are indeed correct, Psion. I will correct/update that grammatical error when I update the ship posts with some tweaks I am doing to the shape of the engine cowls (and engine glow efx), and the bottom edge of the nacelles leading into the engine cowls. Too sharp and square as is, so I'm rounding them off to be closer to Andrew's artwork. It was buggin' me too much to leave it as it was.

Back to the proper use of grammar (big thing with me), that was nagging me at the time as it just didn't “sound” right. I have used “a John Eaves design” etc. before so I was thinking that it was fine. Then you pointed it out, and I just checked with my wife (who is a language arts teacher) and she confirms that, in the use case of “a” and “an,” one never wants to have two same vowels next to each other. So thanks for that, dude. ;)

This buggy was a bit tricky with all it's curved and sleek and rounded lines, eps. the cab's canopy. Everything starts in subD, and then is frozen to facilitate detail being cut in via stenciling with other poly shapes. I will post some wires when I get the engine tweaks I am working on done.

While I acknowledge the Trek legend (and rightly so, IMO) that Andrew is, I've never been one to be star-struck (much anywho or lasting). Peeps are just peeps to me. So not really a big deal, Emperor (though I appreciate the fact nonetheless, and am honored to be personally asked to build his designs). I'm friends now (some closer than others) with many of the guys from Trek; John Eaves, Doug Drexler, Sean Scott, Mike Okuda, Rick Sternbach, Rob Bonchune, David Stipes, and Andrew Probert. They are all very approachable (even Rick, LOL), and quite friendly. They have really made my day many times with all the nice words all of them have shared with me in regard to my work. They are all great guys in my book, both talent-wise, and also personally, esp. in regard to my closer friendships with Doug and John (John's my bro-buddy, as he calls us separated at birth we're so alike). As I see it, it's an honor to ever be asked to build any of their designs, and I love doing it for the designs themselves, but also to be given the op to give back to guys that have given me so much joy over the years. :)

Mr. Probert, as well as just about anyone who worked on TNG, and (as I'm finding out) many people involved with BSG, are all great people on a personal level, as well as professionally, and I am very fortunate and honored to call many of them (Mr. Probert included) friends of mine. Yeah, it's great, knowing who they are, but it's even nicer that we can all see what great people they are, to actually be willing to help the fanbase out, and interact with us, and not pull the whole "I'm part of Hollywood, I'm too busy to be bothered with the likes of you" attitude.

That's pretty much what I expected, deg.

I just saw that phrase and recalled some of the things Doug has written about when he'd gone from fan to pro, and the opportunity arose to work on something he had a "since I was a kid" interest in. At least you didn't have have to hide it, lest the Powers That Be think you'd walk off with props for some idiotic fanboy coup-counting. (I've had to deal with that personality type myself in other venues, and was not surprised the PTB were leery of it. We're certainly all glad Doug knew the score there, got hired, and could do all the work that he's done.)

And add another voice in praise of your work building the Sphinx. I always love things that flesh out the "nooks and crannies", especially ones that we never really saw because budget priorities didn't allow for it.

    I concur 100%, Admiral. Very refreshing. :)

Hear ya loud-n-clear on all counts, Emperor. ;) And I recall “gushiing” a bit myself when I first met a lot of the guys via Doug's blog, so I'm not immune, LOL. It passes quickly with me though, as I just see them as accomplished guys at their art (which I consider myself as well), and good guys to boot.

And thanks again for those nice words. And yeah, it is nice to realize some stuff that may have slipped through the production cracks. I like doing that, and even better that you guys get such a kick outta seeing me do it as well. That makes it all the more worthwhile to do, eh. :)

And thanks again to all my friends for the nice words. She is indeed an excellent design, I agree 100%! :)

Damn. That kills any hope I'd been holding out that you'd snuck out and photographed the real thing.

Thanks, deg! Brilliant work, as always!

Heads-up/FYI: Me (and Andrew's) Sphinx is featured in Doug Drexler's new video-blog on startrek.com.

You can see it here on the new and relaunched startrek.com the site itself, or...

you can also see it here in HD on Doug's Drex Files blog site.

It's all fun Trek-based stuff, but there some great animated SHIPS OF THE LINE: ACTIVE DUTY! pieces on there too not to be missed by any Trekker worth their salt-vampire!

Make sure you guys and dolls go to the startrek.com page also and click on the “I Like This” link at the top, eh. You may have to register, but you're a Trekker right, so you're already registered, right? :D

Wow. Loved the whole video, but the SotL: Active Duty part is just some serious eye-candy!

I think I had a little nerd-gasim. Cool video and it was neat to see and hear Doug, Andy and deg. The active duty portion put it over the top. Way cool!

Very, very cool. Thanks for making the model and sharing it with us both here and in Doug Drexler's video, and thanks to Andrew Probert for allowing this design to be realized and highlighted in this fashion.

Are there any plans to finish the 3D realization of Probert's Enterprise-C design? :)
