Online Petition Bring Back Kathryn Janeway!

To me, the Janeway fans would gain a lot more...sympathy, if they showed a bit more flexibility and willingness to compromise a little bit.

Tell me just what kind of compromise is there, our character is dead in Trek books and we want to read stories about her alive, I don't see any ground in between. The only compromise you all want is for us to go away and leave all of Trek to you and that isn't right nor is it going to happen.

Yes why the outrage over Treklit readers being unhappy with the death of a character? It was dumb. Even those that didn't care much one way or the other didn't see it as a good death or necessary in any way.

Why do we have to be hounded and labeled fanatics because we think something Pocket Books did was a BAD IDEA which should and could (easily) be corrected?

It's really very simple.

Ugh...I'm done with this...when the Janeway fans are less willing to sound like victims and more willing to have an open-minded discussion about this, they know how to find me.

....

I don't intend to monitor this thread any further (in other words, if you respond here I won't know that you did so), as I don't feel people are allowing any room for constructive dissent. I'll come back if that's what anyone wants...but I somehow doubt it.

Really, really disappointing.

What I find the most interesting about this conversation is that neither DonIago or anyone else answered the question, What kind of compromise? Rather than answer this question he chose instead to drop the conversation all together and told us so. That gives the appearance of no answer in the first place, and my guess would be that he argued himself into a corner and couldn't escape any other way.

What I really find disgusting is the demand that we have "a good reason" to bring her back from a thoughtless, pointless, and badly done death and I don't find that reasonable at all.

How is it disgusting to ask for a good reason? If there's no reason to bring the character back, then why bother doing so? Resurrecting characters willy-nilly is a bad idea, and there should be a good reason for it. This has nothing to do with the quality of the original death.

And whatever you may think of Janeway's original "death" at the hands of the Borg (since after all there *is* an existing way to bring her back), the glowing praise "Full Circle" has received indicates a potentially-bad situation has been turned into something of high quality.

Buffy was pissed that her friends ripped her away from heaven.

Just because Kirk gave up on heaven to be a Starship Captain, twice if you believe his novels, it doesn't mean that Janeway will.

I didn't finish the book.

I am so lazy.

I altered my OS and the new configuration of my PC no longer has textreading features.

That is in your eyes, my opinion is that it is and was a bad idea, "Full Circle" introduced a character that could have very easily been Janeway, so that whole dead Janeway plot was contrived, bad and deserves to be set right.

And I frankly do not care how. Personally now I would like to see the whole story arc thrown out and reset. There are far better stories out that that don't depend on dead characters, an enemy that is brought back way to strong, and whole species (namely the Trill) decimated. This is bad writing. So yep she has to be brought back and I don't care how, just so she is living (and in her own body), still an admiral and still with Chakotay.

You know, I have never said that you all shouldn't read or like Trek stories, what I am saying we should also have the right to read and like Trek stories too. This can and should be done because we are all lovers of Trek and Trek characters, one group of readers shouldn't be sacrificed for others, it's not right nor is it fair.

Kestrel, "good reason" is just one more way of saying, I don't give a damn about you or what you would like to read.

It can also just as easily mean, "I cannot fathom the depth of your fandom for this one character. Because of that, I need more reasons that 'just because I think it was a bad idea' in order to agree with you. Otherwise, I simply think you're going overboard."

One character being similar to a previous one does not make a plotline contrived or bad. If anything, it might make the new character contrived, but that's a characterization question, not a plot question.

The "how" isn't a question. It's very easy to bring Janeway back based on where she was left. The question is "why?" Let's not get into the Trill - as heartbreaking as "Unjoined" was, it was an excellent tale. None of this is "bad writing," it's just plotlines you don't personally care for.

This can and should be done because we are all lovers of Trek and Trek characters, one group of readers shouldn't be sacrificed for others, it's not right nor is it fair.

The storytellers are telling their stories, and we should be fans based on the stories being told, not whether we complain enough to the storyteller that they alter their tale. "Making the fans happy" is never a good reason for a large plotline.

If there's a good reason to bring Janeway back after she's been memorialized and killed/ascended, by which I mean good stories, then I might not like it, but good stories go a long way to changing minds. As it stands, her story's told. It has nothing to do with you or a particular subset of fans, but with making such a large decision (a resurrection) with no reason other than "because I want to."

It can also just as easily mean, "I cannot fathom the depth of your fandom for this one character. Because of that, I need more reasons that 'just because I think it was a bad idea' in order to agree with you. Otherwise, I simply think you're going overboard."

Death is a big deal, or at least it should be, so I do think "just because it was a bad idea" isn't enough to agree with. Is there a plan for plot and character development beyond "Janeway and her happy tree friends gallavanting around the Alpha Quadrant"?

The apparent answer is "We don't care, bring her back." So there is no plan.

If we need a "good reason" to bring Janeway back, then I guess the writers can come up with one.

I think the thought is guilty until proven innocent here.

So, in order for us to want Janeway back, we have to prove it's worth it and then show how to do it, thus creating the story line. This would be instead of asking for Janeway to come back and having the writers come up with a story line.

See, what we're really arguing about is whether Janeway is worthy of coming back.

And in time they may. In the meantime they haven't so aren't going to make a half-assed "return" for no good reason.

The original question was "why should we have to have a good reason?" I gave an answer. The writers have not come up with a good reason to bring back Janeway and apparently feel that for now the universe and Voyager's tale goes along without her. If and when they decide to bring back Janeway, you can bet one of the big questions will be "what's the reason?" We can all here come up with a "how," the question remains "why." You can want Janeway back all you want (that is, after all, the point of missing somebody), but unless you can give a good reason why she should come back, I (and a great many others) think it's more important to respect her death.

Nobody's "worthy" of coming back. Not Kirk, not Spock, not Picard, not Sisko, and not Janeway.

ETA: Also, what Sovereign One said.

Well, if someone "in charge" should order me to kill off one of my characters, then I simply would say "no".

If "the Pocket Books TPTB" decided to annihilate Janeway, then I see it as a good reason not to buy any of their books anymore. I'm not gonna waste my hard-earned money on people who make decisions that I find insulting.

As for "good reasons" to bring back Janeway or other ruined characters, I must once again state that it seems to be a lot of obstacles when it comes to bring back or restore a ruined character. Then it's constant references to "canon" and mantras about how necessary it s wit a good story which will fit into the concepts for the books. But when it comes to ruin, destroy and kill off good characters, then there are no obstacles at all.

No, the argument is, is there a compelling, dramatic reason for Janeway to come back that will produce a good story.

Was there a compelling, dramatic reason to bring back Spock? Nope. Was there a compelling, dramatic reason to bring back Sherlock Holmes? Nope.

However, there were fans who were willing to pay to see stories featuring these two characters. Many Janeway fans believe Pocket has been unaware of their existence. They wanted to let them know there is a market for stories featuring Janeway. That's now been done. Pocket will either do something with that information or not.
