At the risk of sounding mean, my post in the thread in the other forum was to encourage you to join one of the threads already posted. All but three of the threads on the first page are related to a [would-be] new series.

Instead of asking vague, rhetorical questions, join one of those other discussions. You'll find people will appreciate you more.

The short answer is no - no news.

The long answer is that CBS makes a new Trek series sadly unlikely. Frakkin CBS! :klingon:

Slightly longer answer, you may have heard producers talking about a desire to make a new show, but that is all hypothetical talk from people with no current connection to the owners of Star Trek.

As Temis said above, CBS owns the rights to Star Trek on TV, and as long as they continue to print money with their procedurals they have no incentive to take a risk and create a Star Trek TV show.

I'd like there to be a new series obviously lol but I can't see it happening for a while especially since it wasn't that long ago that they cancelled Enterprise also I think it sortof depends on how the next movie does if it's a success then there might be discussions about a new series if not than there won't be IMO.

Haven't heard any rumours myself also.

I agree that we have to wait until the next movie does. However there may have to be a rise in interest in the sci-fi market. If other sci-fi shows start to draw in higher ratings, CBS may produce something to air on The CW. That along with sci-fi movies making tons on money. The Star Trek name does carry some weight.

Important thing a head producer has to put something together that we can enjoy. Someone who knows something about Star Trek, Sci-Fi, Drama, and Action Adventure. Who pays attention to what was working on Star Trek in the past. Don't want to see another Voyager or Enterprise. Needs more to be along the lines of how The Next Generation was put together.

agreed about the rise of interest needed in the sci fi market I forgot to mention that in my last post. But anyways I agree about that.

As for how it's done well as long as it's done well I'll be happy. At the very least it needs good casting and stories for it too work.

Personally I'm not expecting any discussions or whatever to occur till at least 2015 about a new series myself.

I don't think the movie and TV industries are closely enough aligned that success in one will translate to the other. The top movies nowadays are all sci fi (look at how the genre dominates the top 100 list for 2010, especially at the top of the list), yet the genre languishes on TV, and what does exist tend to be sci-fi-ish cop shows.

Why aren't the top five TV shows an animated fantasy about toys, a magical adventure in a wonderland, a superhero show, teenage vamps in love and a parody of Disney tropes? The top TV show list isn't anything remotely like that. Even the superheroes and teen vamps get paltry ratings and barely (or don't) dodge cancellation on TV.
That's the worst approach. TV tastes have changed so that the bland, inoffensive approach of TNG would be a death-knell. Those who want comfort-food entertainment have moved on to cop/lawyer/doctor shows and sitcoms; sci fi isn't part of their menu anymore. Those who want sci fi don't want it to be bland. TNG would fall right into the gulf between two divergent markets.

I wouldn't want to see Star Trek end at all, but I think it'd be funny if it did and it ended in this new Kirk-era. Seeing how Star Trek started in the Kirk-era, might as well be the final era, as well... :) Seriously though when TNG aired I never suspected we'd see Kirk & crew again, even if they are portrayed by new actors.

I should expand what I mean by "How the Next Generation was put together." I admit that was a little vague and some took it a wrong meaning. I did not intend to suggest to duplicate or re-imagine The Next Generation. I was intending to suggest how the Next Generation was created and produced. To look at what elements worked on that show and what didn't. This could be expanded to include the original show and DS9.

First I believe a show needs some charismatic characters in the central command structure. The first two shows had a male captain and first officer that are like 2 sides of the same coin. Should always have an experienced officer with wisdom and is still learning, along with someone more impulsive, ready for the action. Need characters to express their opinion about right and wrong. Have to show a human and non-human points of view. Need characters with accents, from different regions of Earth.

I think Voyager had some lack with Charisma in its core character command structure. A female captain and a passive first officer did not seem to work. It needed a First Officer more like Spock or Riker. Many thought Chakotay was too passive, too diplomatic at first, and writers got too far from the character we seen in the premier episode. A female captain is fine, but have the first officer more of the adventurer, opinion expressive, or the impulsive go getter.

Star Trek is always going to need those adversarial species that challenge the crew, continue use the ever popular Klingons, Romulans, and Borg, and create new ones as well.

Okay, I think I'm getting this figured out:

    1. Trekkies mount an online petition to convince Showtime that they can get a million new subscribers by putting Star Trek on TV.

    2. The show is a traditional crew-going-boldly format.

    3. The lead character/captain is played by Sigourney Weaver.

    4. The rest of the crew is a mix of some familiar, well-liked actors and sexy new faces.

    5. Since the series is on Showtime, there is more latitude regarding sex and violence. However, it's still Star Trek, so it stays basically PG-13ish.

I think it would be nice if there were. I kind of miss my weekly Star Trek show! But then again I would gladly let it go for a good movie again :)

I'd love to see a new trek. set after voyager, but not a starfleet ship. How about regular people in the trek uni trying to make a living, encountering things they can't handle instead of always comming up with some brilliant plan to always come out on top. I picture a Smart mouthed Tellerite & his Klingon adopted brother who hates fighting & klingon ways. They could be salvagers or thiefs & have a ship made up of different ship pieces like some romulan tech some cardassian, ect. pieces they found & integrated. see paramount that wasn't so hard. get crackin!

I read that as first as like a Trek University, like Starfleet academy. I know that's not what you meant but it reminded me of one of the ideas going around before Enterprise was finally announced. Basically set in the Academy following a bunch of young recruits through their student days and all the stuff they get up to. Something like the first part of Trek XI or that episode of TNG when Wesley gets involved in that crash with Nick Locarno (Tom Paris, but younger, sort of).

I reckon it would be great, something completely different and appeal to a new younger Generation. You know, Frat parties, trying to buy a keg of Romulan Ale for the weekend party round Stifler's Mom's place. Losing their Virginity to some hot Orion slave girl. Klingon band camp...possibilities are endless.

I'd rather have no series than a JJverse series.

Actually, interesting idea, without the sex comedy aspects. Something following students in Starfleet Academy would be pretty interesting. Problem is you could only have 4 seasons.
