TV Stars Who Could Play Superman? Tom Welling in Consideration?

Unsubstantiated internet rumor that's being reported on a few sites is that Nathan Fillion is the name at the top of the list.

^According to unsubstantiated Internet rumours, Nathan Fillion is at the top of every casting list for every role. :)

If that's true, and you're not pulling my leg, I think that's horrible casting. Fillion is the Han Solo type. He's not Superman. Superman is the idyllic, noble Boy Scout. That's not Fillion. If he were to play any superhero, he should have been Hal Jordan.

Bomer's under 6 feet and looks like he's 150 lbs. PASS.

Best idea would be to just rehire Routh. It saves time and the actor enjoys some goodwill for his previous work as the Man of Steel. And it is highly unlikely that audiences will start suffering conniptions once they realize that his second outing as Superman (should this become a reality) has little to do with Superman Returns.

But the problem is, Warner doesn't want the audience to think, even for a minute, that this is SUPERMAN RETURNS, PART II. And casting Routh would inevitably create that impression.

I actually don't think Joe or Josephine Public will really think about it one way or the other. That's one advantage of Routh having been an unknown before SR and having kept such a low profile afterwards. Nerds like us might argue about continuity etc but equally, we're also the most likely to read promotional material about how this is a new start for the franchise.

The average cinemagoer will just see Superman up there. They won't be going 'oh, that's the same guy from the last movie 6 years ago' (assuming that the next movie is released in 2012). They won't be thinking of Jason or Richard White or looking for Kate Bosworth.

If Joe Public can cope with Judi Dench playing M in a rebooted Bond - after playing the character in 4 Pierce Brosnan movies - I think they can cope with Brandon Routh returning. But sadly, I suspect that WB don't see it that way.

Very substantiated Internet rumors, on the other hand, report that Fillion looks very much middle-aged, and has more of a sarcastic default vibe than an earnest one. ;)

Jon Hamm would be my absolute, unequivocal first choice for the part. He's got the steely-eyed, square-jawed look that would be perfect for a more traditional, Curt Swan-esque Superman, and we know from his guest stint on 30 Rock that he can do klutzy-nebbishy Clark Kent.

Then again, he's over 30, so I doubt Warner would cast him.

Who cares about the actor's height? Michael J. Fox was never made to actually look his 5'4" in his movies. Just surround Bomer with Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Mel Gibson, Martin Sheen, Richard Dreyfuss, Sylvester Stallone, Bill Pullman and half the male cast of Battlestar Galactica and he'll be looking down on them.

Here we go: random TV star name that would never happen.

Rob Estes (90210, Melrose Place, Silk Stalkings)

SCOOPS: Superman Reboot Rumors!
Follow the link for an inside scoop on the Superman Reboot...
Here is some inside news regarding the new Superman Reboot scheduled for release on December 21, 2012 to be directed by Jonathan Nolan and produced by brother Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas.

David Goyer and Christopher Nolan penned the story around August 2008 end left it in the cupboard until July 2009 when Nolan approached Warner Bros. with the story. They were already looking for writers by then but were so impressed that they told Goyer to go away and finish the story and approached Jonathan Nolan about scripting the project. Jonathan was interested in directing the project which made Chris Nolan even more interested and agreed to produce if Jonathan Nolan could Direct. David Goyer was penning the full story by now and approached Warner about directing duties but said they would decide around April 2010.

Jonathan Nolan is inline to direct which should be confirmed on 26 July at San Diego Comic Con where other announcements will be made with regard to Wonder Woman, Flash and Aquaman leading to a Justice League movie.

Now, I have seen a quick glimpse of the Superman Reboot story in NOTE FORM and can tell you that the Metropolis Police Department are featured heavily in the story trying to overcome the rising gang Intergang who are funded by Lex Luthor and do his "dirty business". "Clark Kent" is not Superman until about 1/3 of the movie has passed and this exclusive news "rejuvinates" the failing Daily Planet reputation and also springboards the career of Lois Lane.

I know that Brainiac comes to Earth about half way through the movie but didn't see the page of why he comes to earth as my co-worker was hogging the pages. Brainiac does cause some damage on Earth and interacts and takes over technology and stuff like that. He also kills a key person in the Superman mythology but I won't reveal who but it isn't Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen or Perry White.

Characters like Detectives Dan Turpin and Maggie Sawyer are featured heavily in the story along with Commisioner Henderson.

Daily Planet staff Cat Grant, Ron Troupe and Steve Lombard are also in the story but all of these are subject to change as well all know. I don't know about casting but I do know what happens in the story. It is very much like The Dark Knight in the way you read it and how you picture it when you read it. I'm really excited about this movie and can't wait until it comes out.

Money's on Turpin. Although a buildup over a few movies to get to know him would be better then if he's killed in the first movie.

^
That actually sounds exciting. No mention of polar bears or giant fucking spiders! ;)

^But it does have the dreaded "multi-villain angle". Cut Lex and half the supporting cast of characters.

Batman Begins had four previously established villains in it, five if you count Joe Chill. It's not about quantity, it's about how they're used.
