Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

^There's a reference to part of the slipstream fleet being sent to the part of the Delta Quadrant where the Children of the Storm were encountered, but I don't know if the CotS were referred to by name. It's the kind of subtle reference that you recognize if you're familiar with the topic but that doesn't stand out and distract from the story if you're not.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Yeah, sorry, JoeP. No need to feel "the stupids", because no-one mentions the name. :) It's a throw-away line; they just say some of the ships are off to "follow up on a discovery the Aventine made"- which pretty much has to mean the Children of the Storm.

Ah, ok. Coolio. :techman:

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Well I am a little late to jump on the bandwagon, but I just finished this book and just wanted to say it was a great read.

I have to admit that Voyager was not my favorite TV series but when the post-TV books started to come out years ago, I gave them a shot and thought they were entertaining. But for a short time there didn't seem to be any new Voyager stories that caught my eye, until these two books. I am glad I picked them up. I am a sucker for happy endings so it was good to see everyone from the original crew back together in the end. It'll also be interesting to see where Meegan goes from here.

My only request? Please make it work out between Harry and Nancy. Haha the man needs some action!

I just finished reading Unworthy tonight and it was great and was going through the thread and basically everything I wanted to say is said fairly well in the quoted post above.

I found Homecoming & Farther Shore good, but Full Circle & now Unworthy are much better. I find it much more enjoyable than the series itself and Cambridge is a brilliant addition and adds a wonderful spark to smaller scenes.

Now I just have all of Titan & 4 DS9 relaunch to catch up on before Typhon Pact in November.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Just finished Unworthy as I just managed to get my hands on it.

A nitpick: Much as I like the choices of Seven of Nine, I can't help but notice the dissonance of her present state compared to Erika Hernandez, who spent most of Lost Souls looking for or hooked to an external power source for a quick power-up.

It just seems to be a sword hanging over Seven that way.

I just finished rereading Lost Souls literally minutes ago, and I don't recall that being a major plot thread for Hernandez. She was more limited in her abilities when cut off from New Erigol's power source, but she wasn't going through the whole book searching for a power fix. She expressed a brief lament about her catoms not having the energy to do much more than restyle her hair, but that was about it.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

And each appearance thereafter she goes for the "energy", at others behest to infiltrate the Collective or contact the Caeliar. It's not a craven search for power, just using the tools at hand.

But it does show us the nature of catoms outside of Axion.

Lost Souls begged the question of "Hook Seven up to a power source and see what happens."

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Finished reading Unworthy today. Over all it was a good read. Some aspects I did not like. The Paris and Kim fight being the worst. The Galen was something else I did not like.
I would think the Doctor would have fought such exploitation of holograms.
Chakotey was a fifth wheel, but it was obvious what would happen with him in the end.
Rather than put him back in command of Voyager, it would have been better had they demoted him or killed off another captain.
Lastly, the Admiral.
I've had enough of Species 8472.

The Meagen story was unexpected.
I thought they could not duplicate the mobile emitter.
Seven's change after Destiny was OK.
I would have preferred to see her changed back to Annika and Seven fighting to get out instead of the other way around.

Now I need to go back and read Full Circle.

The Galen isn't exploitation, it's a chance for holograms to work as equal members of a crew. Besides, the Doctor was one of it's designers so I doubt very much he would be against it.
Chakotey was a fifth wheel, but it was obvious what would happen with him in the end.

How was he a fifth wheel? Maybe I remember wrong, but I thought he played a pretty big in Sevem's story.
Why would it have been better to demote him or killed off another Captain?

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Why would it have been better to demote him or killed off another Captain?
Yes, he was helping 7.
But, that is all he did. Unless you count him being a suspect in the mystery. As for his resuming command of Voyager, it seems too predictable. Maybe if it turned out Eden was the 8472 spy, that would have been more unexpected way for him to take back command. If the Captain of the Glen or Hawking had been lost and he took command of one of those ships, that would have been unexpected. But I was certain by the end, he would once again command Voyager.

As for the Galen,
those holograms seemed like servants, not equals. Meagan was the only exception. Maybe future novels will show this not to be the case.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Since this is a spoiler review thread, I'm gonnna skip the tags since this thread is already marked spoilers.

As for Chakotay taking command of Voyager, I definitely see where you could say that it was too predictable, but since I wanted to see him back in the center seat I was happy to see that happen.

As for the Galen, I honestly don't remember enough specifics to really be able to discuss it to much. I just don't remember there really being anything that bad being done to any of the holograms.

I don't mind him being back in command of Voyager. I guess I wish the story would have been a little less obvious of how that would happen. I for one would never have suspected Eden was the spy. But the actual spy was so obvious. Of course I did not know who he was spying for.
