Has the giant Romulan Warbird that appears in the calendar been shown elsewhere, either show or novel? I am just wondering what its origin is.
If it's the Warbird I think you're referring to, it's a new design by Andrew Probert, although it's based on what he originally wanted to do with the Warbird on TNG. He wanted to do a vertical ship, but the producers insisted on going the conventional horizontal route. Now Probert's using the calendar to show the kind of Warbird he wanted to do in the first place.
The vertical Warbird has been shown in numerous "behind the scenes" TNG art books, like The Art of Star Trek, and The Continuing Mission. But this is the first time we will see it in a large size, in all its glory, and in full color.
Nope, not just you. It's supposed to be a much bigger ship.If it's the Warbird I think you're referring to, it's a new design by Andrew Probert, although it's based on what he originally wanted to do with the Warbird on TNG. Is it me though or just the way it is pictured but it seems to dwarf the D'deridex Warbirds also in the illustration?
The cover is uninspired. It's just an image from last year's calendar cropped. The TOS Enterprise or Defiant leaving that asteroid base. I hope the artwork inside isn't like that, too.

Doug Drexler had some sneak-peeks on his blog. Your milage may vary, but the peeks are certainly not the same old stuff:

No, that's a new one. The asteroid base picture was from a higher angle, looking down on the Defiant.

was already in the last calendar (second image of the last row).

Well, it's probably just to solicitation cover.
