Why is Lady Gaga so popular?

I'm going with people like it and she's visual.

Yep - and as T'Baio says, she's awesome.

As for "groundbreaking"...what does that have to do with musical popularity? It's novelty that gets attention in pop music, not innovation - sometimes the two go hand-in-hand, and sometimes not. Gaga is extraordinarily talented, and quite independent.
Her songs are serviceable, for the most part, but not especially innovative or even very complicated. She's a talented performer, but where Gaga succeeds most is in presentation.

She's got presence and style in spades and has a very good sense of how to balance technique, flash, finesse and just the right amount of outrage to keep things interesting. Very detail-oriented, also: there are things you might see only once or twice, might not even register consciously as they're there for only a fraction of a second, but these small details add much to the overall atmosphere created.

Sure, it's still essentially pop, but there's nothing at all wrong with pop which challenges on some level or on several. And yes, that's true even if you hate it; art doesn't demand you like it - only that you react to it. Art which fails is that which fails to elicit any reaction.

she has a beautiful voice that everyonce in awhile gets to come out and shine in songs like bad romance.
and since i watch very littlle mtv i heard bad romance and loved it before i saw the video.
i was aware of her before then but it was that song that did it.
though the rest of her albums are it and miss.

i do see her as being far more talented then madonna. just wish she would stop with some of the antics and look for more challenging material over all.

though she did write or co write some of the things i like.

oh yeah really liked the bad romance video once i saw it .

I can't name any of her songs, don't recall hearing any of her songs anywhere, and hope it stays that way. She doesn't interest me in the slightest. Just another in a long line of boring, famous-for-five-minutes pop stars. No-one will remember who she is in 10 years. Like Katy Perry.

I initially dismissed her and agreed with those who classed her as another media manipulator. But the more exposure I got, the more I grew to like her. The Fame Monster is a great, compact dance-pop album I can listen to over and over.

What I find kind of interesting about Gaga is that she has developed a loyal following among a range of "outsiders" - gay and lesbian teenagers, overweight girls, nerds, arty types, etc. and yet also has huge mainstream appeal with her music. That opens the possibility that she will (perhaps) be a little more than a two-year wonder as some have predicted.

The recent Times article by Caitlin Moran reveals she's a pretty cool person, too. I just hope she doesn't develop an ego.

I noticed the same. The more I see the people who like her, the more I notice that so many of them are way outside the mainstream, and yet at the same time, it's the mainstream that fuels her ability to continue doing what she does. Personally, I love her music, her image, I believe she's very talented, and I feel that she has a long and successful career ahead of her. Like you, I also hope she doesn't develop an ego. In all of her interviews she seems very down to earth, and I think that's part of her success. I hope that continues.

It seems that Lady Gaga is everywhere these days, to the point where her name has become almost synonymous with contemporary rock. Her music's catchy, but I don't see what makes it stand head and shoulders above all of the other stuff that's coming out. Is her music really that groundbreaking, and if so, how? Or are there other reasons that she's so popular right now?

I'll just haul out the same quote I always use in such discussions.

If the public likes you, you're good.

That's a tough pill for a lot of people to swallow, but there's a lot of truth to it, nonetheless.

Here's why I like her:

I didn't know Lady Gaga was black!
I didnt know Justin Bieber was black! If the kid was any whiter he'd glow.

Really? I thought he was a 30 year old black "singer"? He only sings with 30 year old black guys and he did get nominated for a BET. I just assumed he was a black man and I was color blind.
Visual evidence to the contrary? Is there a "clever" point you're trying to make here?

Well, at least Christina Aguillera can SING!

showing ass is a camera thing...
(I'm NOT complaining.....)

Or, as we say in the radio business, "If you put that on the radio... people will listen to it." :p

Personally, I know I should hate everything she stands for but her music is so goddamn catchy I find myself singing along. Plus, she's pretty hot.

Interesting that you call her boring when you have never heard any of her music.

The internet: Where sarcasm goes to die.

My point is he the whitest of white boys, completely white inside and out and he tries to act like this gang leader black guy singing about how he lost his one true love... at age 15.
