Episodes you could do without...

I could do without most of the third season. It's easier to list the third-season eps I wouldn't trash.

Indeed.

I tend to enjoy any Star Trek more than most other things, but S3 seriously dented the overall good:bad ratio of the series.

In theory, none of them.

In practice, when I'm actually choosing to spend 45 minutes watching something, there's quite a few--most of them have been mentioned upthread.

I see it as "stuff I'd like to watch right now" vs. "stuff I'll watch some other time."

Here are the ones I could live without.

Season I
Miri
The Squire of Gothos
The Alternative Factor

Season II
Catspaw
Wolf in the Fold
Return to Tomorow

Season III
The Mark of Gideon
Plato's Stepchildren
That Which Survives

That's about it. Most of the ones I dislike are the ones I have just grown bored with.

Incidentally, I see many people have listed The Way To Eden and the Lights of Zatar, but those are two of my favorites!!'

Yes, Spock's Brain is a guilty pleasure for its campy goodness.

The Squire of Gothos

Return to Tomorrow

WHAT...THE...HELL...!?? You listed 2 of my favorite episodes!

Well, people have listed some of my favorite episodes too. My biggest problem with Squire episode is that I genrally have a problem with god-like characters and Trelene is just annoying in this episode.

Well, "Q" was technically annoying in TNG, but that was his charm & he was modeled after the Trelane character. Trelane was god-like, but in the end was just a child playing with his toys (Kirk & crew). So classic IMO.:techman:

So what did you dislike about "Return to Tomorrow"? I've always considered this episode to be one of the best, but I am probably alone there. This episode never gets mentioned when talking about the best TOS episodes. :weep:

Bottom line: To each their own. :)

IIRC, Trek fanon says Trelane was one of the Q.

I just love Trelane. How can you not like a flamboyant, petulant, capricious alien who looks like Liberace and acts as gay as a Chinese kite?

Catspaw is a truly awful episode but I always look forward to the end when it obvious that the aliens are puppets being controlled by visible strings.:guffaw:

I am just starting to watch TOS for the umpteenth time so if anything occurs I shall be sure to let you know.
The first episode on the first disc is for some reason The Man Trap. The acting at the end where the alien is eventually destroyed in Bones quarters is truly awful.

They put them in airdate order for that collection. I agree with your assessment, by the way.

Mine:

And the Children Shall Lead
Way to Eden
Spectre of the Gun
The Alternative Factor
Reqium for Methusela (Kirk was just WAY out of character imo)
Plato's Stepchildren
The Man Trap (Everything was 'out of character' given the creature WAS intelligent)

I have to agree. I just watched "Squire" this week and it occurred to me just how well cast Trelane was. That was a hard role to interpret. It required lots of lines, movement, emotions etc of the actor - and I think that actor nailed the role.

Yeah, not bad for a Kingon ;)

At that time, Bill Campbell was generally known for roles in war movies and gangster films, usually playing very tough characters. So playing a cross between Liberace and the Prince of Darkness was a pretty tall order (it wouldn't surprise me if the studio was actually thinking of getting Liberace, only to have Roddenberry push for Campbell; GR loved casting actors for parts that they were completely unsuited for, only to have them work out spectacularly).

Ugh. What was the one with the people on the clouds? Oh yeah, the Cloud Minders. Plato's Stepchildren as well. Good lord, kill me now ;)

I found "Patterns of Force" pretty unpleasant the last time I watched it.

That said, McCoy's utter confusion when he's thrown into a Nazi outfit and quickly beamed down into a closet where he finds Kirk & Spock dressed in SS uniforms is PRICELESS:

McCOY: (looks around the room) WHAT THE DEVIL'S GOING ON HERE???

(Come to think of it... I should post that on the McCoy-quote thread!)

I could easily do without "The Omega Glory" and "Miri," though neither are entirely without interest. For that, you'd need an episode like "The Way to Eden."

Me too. It had to be even more unpleasant so close to the time of the Nazis. I'm surprised the network let them do it.
