Sorry, but I've gotta keep 'em all. Yes, even "And the Children Shall Lead".
No... if you rewatch the episode, you'll see that in the end, Kirk and Spock find a way to reactivate the obelisk control system and the defector beam launched from the top.The deflector stuff was done from Engineering and the bridge.

One of the things I found most surprising when I first joined this board is how split opinion is on just about every episode. There are several that I find self-evidently awful (and that does include ATCSL, sorry ATCSL fans), yet many people love them. Similarly, many of my favourites have been mentioned in this and similar threads.
Whilst this is probably a pretty banal observation, this wide variation is presumably why TOS is still well regarded.
Assuming you could eradicate most of the third season and a lot of the second, as has been suggested, what would replace it?
Not an ATCSL hater either...
Gotta love the Rolling Stone's lawyer as a space alien!!!
I don't understand the lack of appreciation of this episode.

The director of this episode, Marvin J. Chomsky, is generally regarded as a skilled TV director (he also helmed Billionaire Boys Club and several installments of Roots), but there's really nothing he could have done with this script. Considering the guy who wrote it, Edward J. Lakso, also went on to write some pretty lousy episodes of Charlie's Angels, The Fall Guy, and Airwolf, need I say any more?

Ah, I thought you were referring to the Enterprise's deflector.
And I don't need to rewatch the episode for the sake of a major plot point.

Let's just start with an excerpt from the review:

Who cares about some cynical reviewer's nitpicking?!?
I don't need to be told what to like.
I always thought Michael Dunn was amazing in "Plato's Stepchildren".
Hell yeah.. Dr. Loveless!!I always thought Michael Dunn was amazing in "Plato's Stepchildren".
He was one of the true redeeming values for me in this episode. Great actor.![]()

Oh, I love "Patterns of Force", but concur on "Catspaw".The only episode of TOS I truly hate enough to never watch again is "Patterns of Force". I wouldn't shed any tears for the loss of "Catspaw" though.
