Episodes you could do without...

The deflector stuff was done from Engineering and the bridge.
No... if you rewatch the episode, you'll see that in the end, Kirk and Spock find a way to reactivate the obelisk control system and the defector beam launched from the top.

Sorry, but I've gotta keep 'em all. Yes, even "And the Children Shall Lead".
:wtf:  Well, you stand alone sir. I don't know how you can stomach it, but I guess you've got an iron clad stomach.

:guffaw:

Not an ATCSL hater either...

Gotta love the Rolling Stone's lawyer as a space alien!!!

I don't understand the lack of appreciation of this episode.

Just in case anyone hasn't already read it, there's a scathingly funny recap of “And The Children Shall Lead“ here.

This is my list...

The Alternative Factor (WTF)
Miri ( AKA "Bonk!! Bonk! on the Head")
Catspaw (Halloween Show?)
The Omega Glory (SPEECH!! SPEECH!!)
The Empath (How much forced emotion can the viewers stand?)
And the Children Shall Lead (Knives in SPACE!! that damned rhyme..over and over!!)
Turnabout Intruder (And THIS is how it ends?..)

Spock's Brain and The Way to Eden have actually grown on me...
They're fun to watch in a "MST3K" sort of way....Soo Bad they're good?

One of the things I found most surprising when I first joined this board is how split opinion is on just about every episode. There are several that I find self-evidently awful (and that does include ATCSL, sorry ATCSL fans), yet many people love them. Similarly, many of my favourites have been mentioned in this and similar threads.

Whilst this is probably a pretty banal observation, this wide variation is presumably why TOS is still well regarded.

Assuming you could eradicate most of the third season and a lot of the second, as has been suggested, what would replace it?

I recognize a pattern of rejecting episodes that have a high annoyance factor -- "Plato's Stepchildren", "Miri", "And the Children Shall Lead", "The Way to Eden" as examples. Despite this, I can look past the aggravations of "Miri" and "Eden" and still find good elements there.

As for rejecting things by seasons, in my case it wouldn't be nearly as cut and dried. I might surprise people by keeping some unpopular and not especially great S3 episodes while dropping some of the clumsier early S1 shows.

Let's just start with an excerpt from the review:

An early Turd Season episode, "And the Children Shall Lead" has a script that offers virtually nothing: No suspense, no character development, no intriguing sci-fi premises, and not one memorable line of dialogue. The director of this episode, Marvin J. Chomsky, is generally regarded as a skilled TV director (he also helmed Billionaire Boys Club and several installments of Roots), but there's really nothing he could have done with this script. Considering the guy who wrote it, Edward J. Lakso, also went on to write some pretty lousy episodes of Charlie's Angels, The Fall Guy, and Airwolf, need I say any more?

Reluctantly I would have to suggest Return of the Archons. I have just watched it and in my opinion it is truly awful. I don't think anyone else has put it forward so it might just be me.

Ah, I thought you were referring to the Enterprise's deflector.

And I don't need to rewatch the episode for the sake of a major plot point.

Yeah, just whenever you get around to it. Actually, it's so easy to jump online and watch from the CBS website. You can bring up any episode and jump to the points of interest.

I disagree. I enjoyed it..And there are some great quotes: Death..death to you all..death to you allll...is still my favourtie!!

Who cares about some cynical reviewer's nitpicking?!?

I don't need to be told what to like.

I only mentioned it because I relate to what the reviewer said. So, I raise my hand on caring. ;)

I'm not telling you what to like, just standing on the side that doesn't like the episode. You're free to like it... I don't really understand why, but I'm not trying to stop you.

Actually, if one were to watch "And The Children Shall Lead" and "Plato's Stepchildren" as comedy episodes, they can be enjoyable. Just remember to take nothing seriously, or hold anything "canon" accountable.

Nothing wrong with Plato's Stepchildren, either. Was every episode of TOS a literary triumph? No. Does it have to be to be enjoyed on some level? Certainly not.

It's interesting how many people will unconditionally defend TOS when others point out its occasional camp and melodrama, but when some poll like this comes along will then have a mighty list of issues with the series and prefer to pretend that certain episodes "never happened."

Its all "canon." The writers made it up as they went along and changed it to suit their story, just as later writers of Trek series and movies would later do.

The only episode of TOS I truly hate enough to never watch again is "Patterns of Force". I wouldn't shed any tears for the loss of "Catspaw" though.
Oh, I love "Patterns of Force", but concur on "Catspaw".
Sweet Boneless Christ that episode's horrible.
