Which other season should have been the final season of Lost?

Which season do you think the show should have ended with other than Season 6? This question is to those who are unhappy with Season 6.

While I was very happy with Season 6, rewatching the show makes me realize that it really could have ended a couple different times, were it not for crazy twists.

Season 1: The show could have ended at the end of Season 1 if that boat had been full of happy people instead of Evil Others. Everybody gets rescued! THE END.

Season 3: Instead of "Not Penny's Boat," have Charlie write on his hand, "Totally Penny's Boat." Locke doesn't kill Naomi. Jack calls the Freighter, and Penny answers the phone. Everybody gets rescued! THE END.

Season 4: They manage to diffuse the bomb and get everybody off the Island and onto the Freighter. Everybody gets rescued! Ben and Locke still move the Island, but everybody else has been rescued, so nobody gives a damn. THE END.

If I had to choose among the pre-existing seasons my choice is Season 5. I wouldn't have wanted to lose S3 or 4 or 5. They were really the show's golden period.

However, I don't think any other season though should have been the final season but season 6 itself otherwise it would have left us hanging with multiple cliffhangers and no resolution. That said, season 6 was a disappointing coda to the series and should have seriously been tweaked. It needed to have everything that made S3-5 so good and made LOST appointment tv that you anxiously looked forward to each week. Those elements being--fast pacing, interesting revelations, more connecting disparate dangling threads, an urgency, a narrative purpose and not the aimlessness we were treated to this year, *all* the remaining questions being fully answered and finally wrapped up with an epic denouement.

A season as middling as season 6 wouldn't have hurt nearly as much in the middle of the show's run but being the final chapter of the series after 3 solidly consistent seasons that were building beautifully it just hurt the show.

If they ended with Season Five there would have been a lot of closure. It would be left to the view to decide whether they get back to the present or not. But at this point we learned the fundamentals of the Jacob / Cerebus rivalry.

I would pick Season 5 because I love the flashforwards and the Losties battling aganist Widmore's people, and that season seems more untified and altogether than Season 6 with an ending that would have people talking for many years longer the ending of the Sopranos.

If the show had actually ended with the flash of light with "The Incident" I would have thrown my remote through the tv.
