The worst game I ever bought would have to be the 2001 Spider-Man game for the PC. It wasn't absolutely horrible, but it was disappointing.

I loved that game. I've played previous Spider-man games, but that was the first one to make you feel like you were the web crawler himself. From swinging through the city to beating up bad guys the game was fantastic from beginning to end. I did play the PSX version though, so maybe the PC port just wasn't any good.

There are some Japan-Only Famicom titles that can rival it in sheer badness.

When I was a kid I had a subscription to Game Players magazine, and they rated their games on a scale of Cosmic Race to 10.

Haha, the original Spec-Ops: Rangers Lead the Way? That game actually converted me from using inverted style FPS controls to using 'normal', because it refused to give you the option!
I actually had a lot of fun with that game, but yeah, it was buggy and impossible.
Off the top of my head I'm going to say Friday the 13th by LJN for NES. God were those LJN games awful... just terrible.

Worst games I've played on the original Nintendo... 3-D WorldRunner, Deadly Towers, Back to the Future, Jaws.
Hell, back in those days most video games based on movies were horrible because usually the movie didn't fit into to a video game mold, so instead they just made a game and called it by the movie's title. If you didn't know what you were playing, you'd never associate it with the movie in question.

Hind - a flight sim based on the MiL-24 Hind-D Soviet helicopter. it's absolutely fucking impossible to play because you can NOT get the helicopter to fly straight and level for more than 2 seconds and you wind up ascending and descending like a rollercoaster and when using auto-pilot so you can man the gunner's seat it won't give you a decent shot at attacking your targets.
