Window/Hood reflection

I drive allot, and I am sure other people have noticed that things on your dashboard will refract into the window. Sort of like a HUD, but the light direction is different. Although I'm not 100% certain how that light refraction happens, something else i find odd.

How can pavement marking on the ground be refracted onto the hood of the vehicle? How does that happen?

Probably due to the angle at which you're looking at the hood, plus most hoods are curved quite a bit.

The reflections are of road markings from a longer way off than you might think.

Actually, they are not. I see see the markings vividly in the hood. In fact I can steer by the markings most of the time. Now this is under very controlled conditions on the airport. But, the point is, how does it happen.

I have never witnessed the pavement being reflected on the hood. I can't even see my hood while I'm driving.

You're not seeing the road reflected in your hood.

It's still another reflection in your windshield.

Bet if you lean your head out the window it'll go away....

This damn thread has me obsessed now.

I just got a new Grand Cherokee today, and the hood is nowhere near as convex as what many cars have nowadays.

But since it's all shiny, the effect is more obvious.

I was definitely seeing the yellow & white lines of the road reflected on the hood, though the shape of the hood pushes those reflections to the L & R sides.

i will try that, but from what i see on any other day. I don't think its in the window.

But I'll look. and even if it was, how does it get there? It don't seem logical. and its not in the window above the hood, or at least I cant see it any higher than the hood.
