Christopher Eccleston finally speaks about why he left Doctor Who

there was this awful cheap wine around back then called 'Bulls Blood' which burned the back of your throat in passing.
Oh, I remember it well! If only because it was so bloody horrible..It was Hungarian, IIRC. I haven't had any since the mid-80's but I'll never forget it's effect...

And I agree with your views on Eccley as well.

:D

Oh it was horrible. But it was cheap and you could get utterly fried for next to nothing. Until it came back and burned the skin off your throat. That era was the last time I drank dry blackthorn, too, after discovering that it left an indelible stain on the carpet if you threw it up... made me wonder what it does to the guts. I'm so glad to be able to afford decent qualty alcohol these days!

Eccy's gorgeous but he does take himself too seriously.

But I think we have to remember that girls are a bit more open to that kind of thing than us guys.
I wonder why that is?

And just because some people "experiment" doesn't mean there aren't also people who are genuinely, biologically, gay. It's ridiculous to suggest it's all just the same thing.
Of course it's ridiculous; I don't think anyone was equating the two.

Your experience of college seems similar to mine. I certainly never experimented with other women, nor did any of my colleagues. We did do a bit of throwing up and passing out, as I recall: there was this awful cheap wine around back then called 'Bulls Blood' which burned the back of your throat in passing.
Ouch. Never was much for wine; in our case it was cheap vodka mixed with whatever we could find to mix it with.

On topic, personally I suspect that Eccleston is hinting at the fact that he has a bit of a luvvie thing that takes his art Terribly Seriously. That really wouldn't sit well with burp and fart jokes. Add to that the general chaos of the first block of filming and one can see him being jaded without having the postulate the ridiculous idea of someone so utterly left wing being homophobic.
I recall reading that he wasn't too fond of John Barrowman's boisterous nature. Also, he doesn't seem the type of actor to stick around for an extended time in any one project - he does his thing and moves on to the next. He was probably antsy after 9 months of filming.

FFS: Eccleston made his decision on whether to stay or not halfway through the season shoot, before John Barrowman arrived on set.
Anything which influenced his stay/no-stay decision happened during the shooting of his first half dozen episodes.

FWIW, Eccleston was interviewed in today's Guardian. No real talk about DW but the interviewer was surprised to find him to be a genuinely funny guy. I'm too lazy to link it but it's probably on their website.

FWIW also, I remember reading an interview with Barrowman (who I personally find to be a bit of a dose), where he admitted that he didn't get on with Eccleston. But I find it hard to believe that the lead in a show would leave over an occasionally recurring guest star, even if it was John Barrowman. Though if anyone could provoke it ...

I suspect Barrowman. Considering his prior history of literally shitting on people.

Proof or it didn't happen.
Proof. :bolian:

Ew.

I would point out that Barrowman didn't literally grab someone and choose to take a shit on their head; he says he accidently drank something spiked with laxative and during a dance routine where he had high kicks, some poop uncontrollably went flying.

Pretty gross, although he does list it as most embarrassing, not something he finds funny or is proud of.

Contrast that to a sick fuck like Andy Dick, who would intentionally vomit and pee on his audience during a rather depraved phase in his rather depraved life.

Ah, show business.

I think the fact he often uses it as an anecdote speaks volumes about the man. I also don't appreciate being accused of lying.

So he gets asked what the most embarrassing thing to happen to him, so bloody what. Maybe he feels that they are and thus answers accordingly.

One clarification.

Eccleston didn't make his final decision until the eleventh hour -- shortly before "Rose" aired and as the production was gearing up for the second season. The man was genuinely torn about returning; he liked being the Doctor, he didn't like the behind-the-scenes crap he had to deal with.

What finally forced him to decide that no, he wasn't going to return, was that he learned the BBC had put out feelers to Tennant about taking up the role midway through the second season. Eccleston felt he wasn't wanted, so he decided to leave. In the BBC's defense, they didn't know what Eccleston was planning on doing and they were only protecting their investment in the series by lining up another actor.

Part of the reason for the glowy regeneration effect was that it allowed the production team to mask Eccleston in the shot. The regeneration scene is actually all Tennant; they were able to match the original ending of "Parting of the Ways" to Tennant wearing a skullcap.

So, yes, the main events that soured Eccleston on working with the crew of Doctor Who happened early in the production, but there was still a chance he could return -- until the BBC scuppered that.
