TV renewals that were a disaster

"The Simpsons", about season 8.

"Stargate: SG1", the end where they are all sitting at JAck's place, while he fishes -- that was a nice way to end the series. Put in some TV movies to kill the baddies off and tie up loose ends, and it would have made a well rounded series.

"Family Guy" after the cancellation. If we had known had fucking bad it was going to get and then be after it's return, it should have STAYED cancelled.

The last season of "South Park" has been underwhleming, and some of the jokes just not funny and forced -- I have a feeling the show is approaching it's time.

"Reno: 911!", end it with the "Tachos! Tacos! TACOS!!!" and it's just odd enough to bring the series to a close.

If we're talking purely in terms of ratings, I'd say Dollhouse Season Two, Terminator Season Two, Better Off Ted Season Two (love the show!), Scrubs Season Nine...

7th Heaven comes to mind. I stopped watching after only a couple of seasons and it got crappy when they started bringing in a new stray kid every week. However, some people still liked it and I didn't care so much if it was on or not. The show got to its tenth season and it was advertised all over the place as the last one, and it had a nice finale where a main character died and everything was at peace.

And then the next fall the CW was in its first season and decided that they would try to milk the 7th Heaven fans for all they were worth to boost ratings, and 7th Heaven was brought back, despite having a series finale the spring before. It only lasted for one more season.

What really irritated me was that they brought back this show over Everwood, a show that could have continued for several more years and been at least a moderate success for the CW. Instead they continue a dead show that will last only one more year. Right.

A-Team S5 - They changed the format of the show. The A-team got caught and was working for the government doing spy missions outside the US. Ratings sank and the season was cut in half before the show was canceled.

Yeah, they toyed with the premise, but that season also featured one of the best episodes of the entire series - the one set in a restaurant where one of them - gasp! - finally actually gets shot!

Ah, thanks IMDB - the final ep of the series too. Without Reservations: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0504242/

Twin Peaks should never have been renewed for a full second season.

Thirteen episodes, yes. A full season, no.

That second season must rank as one of the most annoying TV productions ever mounted. The show fell off a cliff after the identity of Laura Palmer's killer was revealed. Much of the second half of the second season is almost unwatchable,

And yet, in the last few episodes, it somehow miraculously caught hold of a branch or something, and managed to haul itself back up to the edge of the cliff. The last few episodes built up to a really solid cliffhanger finale, raising hopes that a third season might recapture the magic of the first.

But by then it was too late. The show was cancelled.

Fuck you, Twin Peaks.

Scrubs. They knocked out a hell of a finale and then renewed it with Zombie Scrubs. That season wasn't without its charm but they really should have left it where it was. It tarnishes the actual show to a certain degree.

That was not Scrubs, it was Scrubs: Med School.

I see that we've made if so far down the thread without a single mention of the woeful 'Til Death yet!

Surely the worst TV show to have EVER been renewed.

After taking it off the air due to extremely low ratings, what was its reward? Cancellation? Nope, a full season order. WTF?

That was Sony practically giving the show to Fox for free because they wanted the extra episodes for syndication. I've never seen the show, but I heard the producers just went wacky with the last season and turned it into some kind of existential comedy.

I'll add Family Matters. It turned into a sci-fi show.

Especially after the move to CBS for the final season...

And along those lines, I'd add Perfect Strangers to the list too...

I thought Perfect Strangers was fine until the last season. I liked when they were in the apartment better.

Married with Children was great for the first five or six seasons. The last five or six were bad.

That was season 8. Personally, I think seasons 9 and 10 shouldn't have happened. TPTB should have used all of their resources to make Atlantis better instead of that weird Ori storyline.

I can also see reasons to cancel SG-1 after seasons 5, 6, and 7 as well.

M*A*S*H survived several cast changes, but it should have ended when Larry Linville (Maj. Frank Burns) left. The stories became dull and David Ogden Stiers’ Major Winchester character was more irritating than funny.

I make fun of Stargate a ton, but to be fair Sci-fi kept picking the show up and they couldn't really say no.

However I wish they hired more writers to work on both shows and gotten them both better.

More of a technicality than anything, but the smallville name should have ended after season 5 with metropolis replacing it.

^
Smallville is going into it's 10th season this fall...they gotta be doing something right.

I rememebr a show called The Powers of Matthew Starr. Logline: alien prince hides on Earth with faithful retainer, while bad guys hunt him. Meanwhile alien puberty, with the aforesaid powers, arrive. So S1 was about puberty and how to live with it.

S2 had Starr and faithful retainer working as superspies for the US Govt. Can I even begin to tell you how much it sucked? Start with absolutely dire and increase it exponentially from there.
