The man that started a lot of good things when it came to nature...

Jacques Cousteau was a great man. He brought beauty and knowledge and inspiration to millions of people. The extent to which he changed lives and, through them, changed the world cannot be measured. He should be remembered and appreciated forever.

His work continues with the Cousteau Society. I've been a member for almost thirty years (and have a piece of the original Calypso to show for it). It's a great organization to belong to for people who care about the oceans and the world.

He must be spinning in his grave over the Gulf mess.

So enjoyed his shows and will raise a glass to him.

His "specials" on network tv back in the 60's & 70's were absolutely MUST SEE. Cousteau was the man!

I was just watching one of his specials about Antarctic sea life on Encore last night. I guess this explains why they played it (they usually don't do nature films). I've missed seeing them on TV, as I used to watch his specials all the time when I was a kid.

Even though the picture quality is very obviously dated now compared to modern documentaries, they're still quite impressive.

I wonder why the Cousteau Society website you linked says:

During his election campaign, President Barack Obama promised, “As President, I will ensure the US provides leadership in enforcing international wildlife protection agreements, including strengthening the international moratorium on commercial whaling. Allowing Japan to continue commercial whaling is unacceptable.” Today, it is apparently less unacceptable.

Gee, I thought it was only Fox News that had the crazy idea that we're pushing for a renewal of commercial whaling.

Way to go on turning a Jacques Cousteau birthday thread into something about Obama, especially since the whaling issue was already being discussed in its own topic. Bravo.

Oh, I'm sure Jacques would be horrified, just horrified to know that someone defiled his birthday by protesting the renewal of the commercial, industrialized slaughter of whales.
