I love the Intrepid class but looking back I think a different ship would have been better.
Personally the series IMO would have been more interesting to watch had the ship been a Prometheus class. Bigger ship, bigger crew, MVAM.

Are you happy the ship was an Intrepid or would you have preferred something different?

I had no problem with the Intrepid-class starship. I think if it had been a ship class we'd already seen before, it wouldn't have been as appealing.

My problem with having it be the Prometheus-class is that Voyager wasn't intended to be an offensive ship. Her primary purpose was to be exploration, and was designed to be quick, and able to investigate and patrol areas like the Badlands. Plus, they would have been screwed if one or more of the parts of the ship had been destroyed.

I just have a problem with the Promethus, period. Don't get me wrong, it's cool. But, that pretty much covers it.

I'm much happier with the Intrepid design. As Valeris said, it was designed with maneuverability in mind. Have the things Voyager did a ship like the Promethus simple would not have been able to do because of its size.

Thought I doubt the producers would allow the writer to destroy a portion of the ship had it been the Promethus we saw, I'm pretty sure there would be a myriad of problems with a ship that comes apart being so far away from a dock that can repair it. No matter how sound the connections are, something is likely to fail. That's just Murphy's Law.

I can't say as I know much about the different classes of starship but I like Voyager. It looks cooler than enterprise because its not as fat and I like the moving warp nacelles (is that the right word?).

But how come every part of Voyager seems to mess up at some point or another except the artificial gravity?

It has gone down a few times. It went down in "Prey". Seven, the Hirogen, and Tuvok have to use/wear magnetized boots to stay grounded.

You hear Tuvok or Harry calling out that deck so-and-so's gravity is out during different battles.

I imagine the bridge and Engineering's gravity is always the last to go.

I know it would be too much effort to do, but I think it would be funny if Janeway floated off her chair in a battle.

I'm pretty fond of the Firefly class myself. :p

Nah, I always like the gadgets on the Prometheus, I would have went for it...

I liked it, but not necessarily enough to form a series around it.

Plus, Prometheus was designed to fight. You didn't see the Defiant go on many science/exploration missions, right?

    100% agreed.

Plus, you have the problem of crew. What happens when you don't have enough crew to effectively man the various parts. And then there's the problem of 3 warp cores...

I would have liked a new ship design, as there was always something about the intrepid class that bugged me.... perhaps the bubbly-fat shape it had, or perhaps it had to do with those stupid warp engines that folded up.

Exactly what was the purpose of that anyways? It just added more time to how long it took to get to warp..... if they needed to bend on an angle to operate properly, why didn't they just leave them fixed at that angle?

Yeah, I'm fond of the Intrepid-class, too.

But I am in agreement on those nacelles. What if the hinges on one of them got stuck and they needed to flee a battle or something?

They were supposedly used to fix the problem about warp having a deleterious effect on space, shown in the TNG episode Force of Nature.

And the variable geometry warp nacelle pylons are apparently left in that position anytime the warp field's power level is above "idle".

Maybe they actually move during warp, making small adjustments, but we can't tell?

I think it would have been neat if Voyager had been an Ambassador class ship. Not a top of the line, state of the art, new ship but one a little older and more seasoned so to speak.

It's pretty, but can you tell me why? I was really thrilled at the new technology aspect of Voyager, but I've heard other people make the same remark.

    I'm curious.

I'm prefectly happy with the Intrepid Class.

Though, I will say that I'm glad they didn't use the Sovereign Class. The Enterprise-E is just downright ugly.

I'm going to go with the Akria class, or maybe a variant. Not the Akria as a combat optimized Starship, make it an explorer/science ship. It's the shape that I think is superior to the Intrepid. Maybe make it only 60% of the regular Akira, to be in keeping with the Voyagers 150 member crew.

I like new technology just as much as anyone else, but I also appreciate the older things that came before. Voyager was a brand spankin new ship completely untested with no history. Even in the real world I like older cars that have been around the block a few times. Not junkers of course, but if it's got a ding here or there or a tear in the seat it's no big deal. Adds character. I think an older ship like an Ambassador with a bigger crew would have been fun to see try and get out of the situations Voyager found itself in on a regular basis. An old warhorse so to speak still plugging along.

I guess this is one reason why I like Galactica so much too. There you had a ship ready to be decommissioned, that was 40 years old, and had been through hell and back with it's out of date technology. But it had a crew that was fiercely loyal to her even before the Cylon attack. We saw a little of this throughout VOY's run (Year of Hell for instance) but I think it could have been expanded on and maybe had more meaning to the audience if we saw an old girl getting pounded on week after week and soldiering on rather than the plucky new kid taking a sucker punch.

I like the Intrepid class ship too, don't get me wrong. It's one of my favorite designs.
