Red Dwarf 10 Announced

We're talking about a show that explained away Lister giving birth to 2 babies, added a new crew member and changed the gender of another via an opening scrawl that was too fast to read. A show that took somebody's appendix out twice, has shifted chronological setting without explanation between 3 different centuries and has routinely changed the back stories of the main characters wherever it has suited them to.

But the difference is, when the show did those things, it was actually FUNNY.

Man... so conflicted. This would be like if the TNG crew decided to reunite to make more TNG episodes. On the one hand, yay more TNG, on the other hand... god, more TNG.

Well, I'll watch and buy the discs anyway. I still wanted to buy the remastered DVDs but I don't think they made it over to R1 land.

Very cool to hear this.

I had half expected this to happen after watching Back to Earth and I said so at the time that it was effectively a way forward for a new series (as well as a testbed to confirm the old gang could still do it). Great to see, and I will be looking forward to it very much so!

I still haven't seen Back to Earth, but I'm one of the rare fans who enjoyed the series right until the end (though I find VII to be a better series than VIII), so I'm happy to hear that it will continue for at least two more series worth of episodes.

I thought series 10 was confirmed and was to be filmed this year?
It was confirmed they were in talks with BBC Worldwide/Dave about it at Dimension Jump but no actual confirmation they were happening, just rumours, apparently.

I think it's alright if you have lower expectations. I think most fans thought they would get something amazing based on years of waiting.

Certainly I thought the Coronation Street cameo would have been more epic than it actually was.

I wonder if we will see that silly green car again.
Didn't the writer buy it out of his own pocket? Got to get his money worth out of it.

Didn't they auction it off afterwards?
Just found a story about it here.

Don't know how much it went for hopefully he got his money back so he can afford to hire some writing staff to help him this time.

Hrm, Wikipedia mentions that he did something for the remastered DVDs... I figured that Naylor would have been able to get him to come back after all these years.

Well, I guess best we can hope for that Naylor does better this time.

I didn't think Back to Earth was really the abomination, the tragedy, the sheer assualt to the good taste of the viewer that most of the reactionaries see it as..

Sure, it wasn't the best or funniest Red Dwarf ever, but as someone else pointed out upthread, had it been just a regular story told within a proper full season no one would have batted an eyelid.

And, well, it looks like it has lead to new series of Dwarf being commisioned by the BBC. This is surely a positive thing?

I know I know, not if the writing isn't spectacular or the series doesn't re-capture the brilliance of it's youth - but you know what? That's a romantic view of the show. In reality, RD rarely lived up to this hyped up romanticised view of itself. Sure, it was brilliant and terribly funny at times, but not all the time, not constantly.

So I, for one, welcome this news and can't wait for more from the Boys from the Dwarf..
