Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

What's the plan for the movies? Jack is a grandpa, and has been for a while. How much longer can her (or Keifer) do this?

Maybe i 'll post a thread later for what youwould want in Season 9....but having Jack die would be as appropriate as having Jack die in the finale (the Lost finale, that is)

Unfortunately, the 24 showrunners didn't getthe same advance notice as Lost's..

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Gentlemen, as this era has now ended, I bid you all a good night. I've greatly enjoyed these threads, and will miss doing them come next January. It's been a great ride and as I said earlier, I've made a lot of great friends in doing this for the last eight years.

Lastly, I want to thank Trekker for hosting these commentaries for the last several seasons and for his witty and often hilarious opening posts. Hat's off to ya, Dude!

:techman:

It's been fun. Especially with all those David Palmer/All-state quips you made in the earlier seasons.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

So the last hour was Bauer in purgatory?

;)

Somehow this finale felt more upbeat than "Lost"

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

So, is President Taylor going to be sharing a jail cell with Olivia? Maybe with her Chief of Staff and that general. All three should be asking for a last second pardon.

The Taylor family has been completely destroyed.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Good ending to what was looking like a awful season when it first started. I'm glad the season and series ended on a high note.

I still miss Sherry Palmer though. "I did it for us David"

Oh, and no Aaron Pierce. WTF?

He has to meet Gene Hunt to enter Cop Heaven.

Aaanyway, I guess I expected more booms and bodies and just 2 hours of explosions. In the end, they just set up a movie that may or may not happen.

It's sad though, I just realized that there's really no more action TV left except NCIS LA and maybe Human Target (which I'm not really interested in watching). I'll miss the silly high stakes of 24.

The movie better happen though... and they better go all out!

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

That was a surprisingly well done and satisfying finale, at least in terms of the universe 24 has set up. For a split second I thought they were going to end it with the squad leader pulling the trigger (which promptly would've been explained away in any 24 movie that comes out); I'm glad the writers did give us an actual ending. Jack's goodbye speech was surprisingly moving too.

If only the rest of the season had been as good as the last few episodes...

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Sorry I had to work and missed the chat, just finished watching it on tape... excellent I thought! I called Taylor's mea culpa a couple of weeks ago. :D

It's been a blast chatting when I've been able to, with this and Lost gone it'll be lonely at the beginning of the week... :(

If the movie goes straight to DVD we should all go out and buy it and agree to a time to watch it simultaneously and have a final chat!!

A vote for Aaron and Tony A. in the movie.... :D

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

He took the pussy's way out.

That or the Dallas way out.

I guess Logan showed his true colors at the end.

I thought maybe it would be Jack buddy that came to save him...
It will be interesting to see how the movie works; Jack will be on the run, Kim and family in a witness protection type program.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

I thought the finale was pretty terrible. Sorry, I wanted to see Jack shoot that Russian fuck in the head, and maybe Logan right after.

And wow is Logan a dick, putting down his dog before trying to off himself.

Jack really should've died at the end of this show, there's really nothing all that dramatic about him being on the run... isn't he on the run at the end of every other season? Or in a Chinese prison, or whatever?

The finale sucked, because Jack stopped racking up his body count, which is what made the last few episodes entertaining.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Disappointed.

Yeah, so they filmed the finale probably before they knew they were cancelled, but this episode felt like it needed another hour to clean up everything. I feel like I've seen this ending before, and what will the movie be called, 24: Redemption II?

This season was bad, this episode was disappointing, and it was appropriate for a series to end this way. I'm not entirely interested in the movie if one should come, even though I will probably see it. For once, I was kinda hoping Jack would get a break after all the crap he's gone though for this country in 8 seasons worth. It ended up being same 'ol same 'ol.

Goodbye 24. You probably wore out your welcome after season 5, but it was an enjoyable, if inconsistent, series. Pity you had to end this way.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

This season stumbled for 14 episodes, but brought it in the last ten. These two hours didn't disappointed. Jack not being killed immediately was a clumsy but necessary bit to keep him around, and the show still provided him with a tragic ending (though it has delivered similar endings twice before, in seasons four and six).

Seasons, best to worst:

2
5
1
7
3
4
8
6

Excellent episode, average season, good series. Bring on the movie.

This was a great ending..cant wait for the movie..and carlos Benard has already been signed !!!

Rob

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

Where have you heard that Bernard has been signed? If its true, it is terrific news. Jack and Tony have ended up in similar places with this ending, though Jack (for now) is free.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

That was actually better than "Lost's" finale. Just for the fact that they didnt have a shitload of shit contridictions and stupid story to explain...And then take the bullshit way out like "Lost" did...

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

I posted this rambling thing on another forum, but I wonder what people think because a couple people have posted that they were disappointed with the finale and upon reflection, I feel like it's the most thematically relevant ending they probably could have come up with and could serve as a finale to the series even without a movie.

No matter what Jack does, every few years something happens to undo all the good he did. He can't even run an orphanage in Africa without people dying around him. He saved Palmer's life only to have him take a bullet to the brain. He fucked up Bill, Tony and Aubrey and pretty much every other person remotely close to him. I'm sure the woman he was doing at the start of Season 5 died as well.

Ultimately, Jack can't solve any problems. Ultimately, he has no agency over the affairs of the United States. He can't kill Logan or his lackey - Logan has to do that for him. He can't take down Taylor or Sukarov - Taylor has to do that for him. He can't protect Kim and his grandson - Chloe has to do that for him.

The show leaves him a broken and empty man, impotent against the forces rallied against him. The fact that the last shot of the show is through the camera of a predator only emphasizes how small he has always been.

Yes, you do ramble. I think a better thematic ending would've been in that episode where he rocks Red's world before she gets sniped... he shouldn't have been able to get it up. It's already been a long day, his sleep schedule was pretty fucked up... he's getting a bit older. He should've just had an embarrassing old man moment and fallen asleep, with Red not getting shot and just looking a bit disappointed but pretending not to be disappointed.. That would've helped with the stupid countdown clock at the end too. Just show his eyelids getting a bit heavy... start the clock... then it hits 0 as his eyes close, and boom. End series. Jack is getting some fucking sleep.

You know, if I wasn't trying to sell a movie, I would have went the other way. Sniper shoots at Renee but Jack takes the bullet and dies. The final 8 hours or whatever are about Renee going on a revenge rampage. It would have messed with everyone so much that it'd be a perfect twist (and I'm sure all the fanboys would have liked watching their favourite hot babe of the week all decked out in body armor killing Logan)... and maybe even the most fitting end to Jack's sad, sad life.

Re: 24: SERIES FINALE - Day 8: 2:00PM - 4:00PM - Discussion and Spoile

1) It was long overdue for Jack to acknowledge how important, essential, and outright necessary Chloe has been to him all these years. Quite liked the speech he gave her.

2) I don't know that I particularly cared for character assassination of Allison Taylor this season, only to have her finally do the right thing in the last 20 minutes of the finale. Struck me as contrived, and too little payoff for all that came before.

3) Logan becomes a murderer. Not surprised, and it gives us one more reason to hate him. Still, I wish the writers had given Jack the opportunity to off him, or at least have the balls to kill the character off once and for all.

4) Jack on the run. Again. I can't quite decide if it annoys me more because it's a rehash of the end of Day 4, or because it's clear they were trying to cash in on the ending of The Dark Knight.

5) A great way to have ended the show, if it had to end the way it did, would be to have the mercenaries drag Jack to the alley and prepare to execute him. Meanwhile, Taylor goes apeshit trying to stop the kill, while Woods has security apprehend Logan. But Taylor finds out -- they're too late. Jack's dead. Logan's dead. In the alley, just as they're about to put a bullet in Jack's head, multiple, silenced shots go off. All the mercs go down. The last merc steps forward and uncuffs Jack, removing his mask, revealing it's Aaron Pierce. Jack asks, "How...?" To which Aaron replies, "Chloe had me assigned to Pillar's team." He hands Jack a cell phone, and he has his conversation with Taylor.

Obviously there are a few leaps there, notably Aaron being one of Pillar's men, but it would have been a nice surprise to see Aaron one last time.

So, all in all it was underwhelming for a finale. I wish Dalia had had the balls to not sign the treaty and call Taylor on her bluff about invading the IRK, instead of letting Taylor get swindled by Logan and still have a chance to save face. Yeesh.

Perhaps with the upcoming film the writers will be able to tighten up their storytelling and avoid the rehashes and tropes they've come to rely on so regularly.

Lastly, I did quite appreciate the bit at the beginning with Kiefer thanking all the fans for watching. It was a nice little note to all of us for sticking through the good stuff and the bad and I'm glad FOX included it.

It's all been a dream?

Didn't JR supposedly shoot himself, but really like his coke exploded in his fridge or something?

JR was goaded into, we are led to believe, shooting himself in the head after a drunken night alone at Southfork, by an apparition initially seeming to be an angel but who later is revealed to be the devil. Just as Bobby comes home, he hears a gunshot ring out. He races upstairs and bursts in to JR's room, horrified at what he sees. The last line of the series was Bobby's: "Oh my God!"

It wasn't till five years later when JR returned that Bobby revealed that the last time he saw JR, he'd been drunk one night, having shot the mirror and babbling something about life being better if he'd never been born.
