It's official: Thank God for Remastered!

However pretty the remastered stuff looks, it is so visually different in feel from the rest of the film that it ruins the whole viewing experience. It just doesn't cut it.
The "remastered stuff" isn't the new FX. The "remastered stuff" is everything but the new FX.

A lot of people made bad financial decisions to make more money and it seemed okay because so many other people were doing it, but it turns out they were all wrong to do it. A lot of people supported Bush's irrational war in Iraq and thinking they were right because they chose to believe the lies and propaganda, but it didn't take long at all to show they were all wrong.

I don't see Hitler anywhere, but fuck all if you didn't just Godwin this thread to hell, Warped9.

Seriously? These reruns are so bad you feel it obligatory to compare their very existence to not just the economic downturn but also the war in Iraq?

Really?

REALLY?

Honestly, based on everything you've said here it sounds more like you just don't like that other people have the option to choose which version they'd like to see. Maybe because some people would prefer the newer versions, maybe because they just don't know any better ... either way, it smacks of you trying to control what other people do. Not cool, says I. Not cool at all.

Someone started this this with the remark the original f/x were utter CRAP. And they stated flatly, IT'S OFFICIAL, the new f/x are far superior. That was their opinion. But I can question the criteria by which they base their opinion.

How dare anyone vituperate the sacred documents!?

You're point was (primarily) that the 60's footage clashes with the new fx and feels like two different productions and that it is clear as day how different they are. However, I've shown the show to people who haven't really watched TOS or any Star Trek at all outside of a few of the movies and XI. None of them even realized the TOS-R effects were new until they were told. So, obviously, the new CGI doesn't clash nor are they as distracting as you make them seem.

Exactly, and that kind of thing puts the lie to all these claims that there's a fundamental "clash of styles" going on here. The new effects violate the expectations of people who are already familiar with the show, and they interpret that as the CG not being "appropriate" for the show - but in fact, it is no more than violated expectations.

Certainly the studio folk had this in mind when they commissioned the new versions - that the Remastered shows will continue to be seen in HD formats for generations to come, and encountered by many, many people who won't compare or contrast them with the originals at all.

When I upgrade to HD equipment at home I'll probably consider buying the Remastered discs, as much for the vastly better transfers and color correction of the live action elements as anything else. For now, though, I own the original versions of the shows on DVD and having those completely satisfies me.

Well, given what his opinions are on Bush, this is EXACTLY what I'd expect. In my experience, LibDems are ALL about telling you what is good for you.

I've been looking.

I keep hoping that I'll find something on the discs themselves that will allow me to set them to "ignore".

It's REALLY an obnoxious feature.

Mine did that too, but I went into setup and disabled the display. You have to stop your disc, then hit set up. Look for something that says "angle" or "display angle." I don't remember how it did it eaxctly, but I'll check when I get home if you haven't gotten it worked out. What brand is it?

Which explains why Dennis hates TOS-R so much, no, wait...

I would say something about sloppy thinking and poor logic vis-a-vis Christian conservatives but that would be incendiary and vitriolic and so I will do no such thing.

@ AJBryant: Hardly conclusive as I am also --and proudly-- one of those "LibDems," though the thought of introducing modern American political agendas in to this discussion is just about as useful as the aforementioned comparisons to the economic crisis and the Iraq war.

@ Brutal Strudel: Precisely, or how it's just as much a flaw of the Republicans to try and control what other people do, say and think these days as well, if not moreso. But that's a discussion for another time, another place.

What do Republicans, Democrats & the fake Nancy Crater have in common?
They all suck.:rommie::guffaw:

:shifty: Okay, not so funny.

As long as we're drifting off topic -- more so is TWO WORDS!

Sorry, just have a bug up my ass.

Had they remastered TOS with the Abramsprise, then I'd be pretty angry. ;)
I saw parts of a fan produced version of Doomsday Machine that had some nice additions of planet chunks in space & such, but it had a RADICALLY redesigned Planet Killer that just made it unwatchable for me.
Prettier I don't mind, but that went way too far. Anyone has problems with Trek remastered w/new FX, check THAT out to see the wrong way it could have gone.;)

It's bad enough that there is so much rudeness, but let's not drag the ugliness of modern politics into here, OK?

I think you maybe referring to Professor Moriarty's work who has a thread running in the Fan Art forum about his ongoing project. I didn't like his new DDM either but I do think many of his shot compositions are better that the TOS-SE versions.

Doubtful. Scott has barely even shown anything with the re-imagined Doomsday Machine yet. How can it be "unwatchable" because of the redesigned machine when the scenes with the machine aren't even done yet?

It's much more likely he's referring to Digital Stream's work in the 1990s. THAT machine looked very different than the one in the TOS episode. Unfortunately, that video was taken down from YouTube some time ago and doesn't seem to be anywhere else on the web.

Daren Dochterman did a nice version of the effects as well (at trekenhanced.com), but I doubt Chris is referring to that one since the machine is very similar to the TOS episode.

Someone...stated flatly, IT'S OFFICIAL, the new f/x are far superior...
Statements like "it's official" usually make me wonder what office or official is officiating. But then expecting people to actually understand the words they're using is so 20th century...

I'll have to try that (tomorrow when I'm awake... ugh!).

I have a Phillips. I wanted to get a DivX-compatible player, and they were the only ones I could find.

This is true also for me...I forgot to mention in all this that I've had to TELL people what the new FX and changes are...which I think pretty much demonstrates that a lot of people find the transition seamless...or they thought ST was pretty decent in the past and sort of "remembered" it that way. So TOS-R is really what they thought they saw in their mind's eye. I've even shown the originals and new episodes side by side, and people were in amazement.

Edit: BTW Dennis, "violate" is a great word...I think that's what we are really seeing here...not really any valid technical criticism, but a change that is so forceful and violating to those who are immersed in the details of TOS they can't break out of it mentally. There will always be a certain percentage of people in any fandom that will be "orthodox" fans. Those who are not so immersed in those details have an easier time breaking out of their memories...and new viewers can see the difference right away!
