You opinions on this story

But these days it is dangerous to be walking even in pairs with all these weidos which get around
That's more perception than reality. Sure, children do occasionally get waylaid and molested by pedophiles, abducted by strangers, and even, God forbid, murdered. But these are extremely rare and random events. The average suburban American child has a greater chance of being blown away by a tornado or swallowed up by the ground in an earthquake than being snatched off the street by a kidnapper.

The difference between now and fifty years ago is that, with today's ever-present and all-pervasive news media, whenever such a tragic event occurs, we hear about it instantly. And we keep hearing about it for weeks or months thereafter.

Google Lenore Skenazy and read some of her columns on the topic of children being raised by over-worried, overprotective parents. You may be surprised and enlightened.

I think the weirdos were there when we were children. Look at what happened to the Beaumont children and other children who disappeared in the 1960s and 1970s.

Yes l have to agree with what you are saying. about the Beaumont children that was a terrble time for there parents

They never found those children

Well when we talk about this type of thing well there was a case of a boy called Daniel who was waiting for a bus and it went past him for some reason and people seen him wating on the highway.

By the time the bus came back in the other direction the child was gone

The police said there were two men who stopped there car and witnesses could see these two men talking to this boy.

Well this boy was never found

These days in Australia if a chld is wating for a bus that child will be picked up even if they dont have enough to pay the full fare.

I still think that times have changed to what fun we used to have as children

I will have a read and l will get back to this thread on what l think of Lenores columns and thoughts on this subject.

I think this just illustrates the folly of public transportation. There are cars littering the Australian landscape and this girl's family can't come up with one? Even white trash down there drives stuff like this:

I don't think you kick a 4 year old girl off a public bus for any reason. That's just crazy.

When I was 6 years old, I was walking over a mile to school every day. I also walked home for lunch and then back for the afternoon session. Our lunch period was 45 minutes.

And when I was 14 I was babysitting my youngest brother (he was a year old) when my parents would go out for the evening.

That bus driver is a nitwit. Clearly, the child in question was a regular rider so the driver should have let it go, knowing she was entitled to a free ride. She could have just made a note to explain the lack of proper registration of her boarding pass.

Parenting and the 13 year old sister aside, the bus driver should really be pulled over the coals for putting a four year old child off the bus, no matter her 13 year old sister was with her...that's just plain stupid on the drivers part....what was she thinking.

It's happens more than you think. Every 40 seconds a child is reported missing or abducted. That is over 2,000 children per day. Of which 37% of those abductions are from total strangers. Tornados only kill only 20-100 people per year normally. Earthquakes are a little trickier to predict when it comes to death toll count. But they don't happen on a daily basis like children abductions, though.

No, it does not say that.

It says that

Of the 800,000 children reported missing annually, approximately 69,000 are abducted:
  • Family members account for the majority of these reported cases (82 percent)
  • Non-family abductions account for 12,000 of these reported cases (18 percent)
  • Of non-family abductions, 37 percent are by a stranger
This means that 4647 of the 800,000 children reported missing annually (37% of 12,000) are abductions by strangers.

Of the 800,000 reported missing annually 711,000 have not been abducted. I assume this means that most of them have either run away or are just missing for a short time i.e a mother might report a child missing when he doesn't come home form school when he is simply playing with friends.

It also says

Of child victims of "stereotypical kidnappings, "40 percent are killed, 4 percent are never found, 71 percent are by a stranger and 29 percent are by a slight acquaintance." In 1999 there were over 115 "stereotypical kidnappings" of children in the United States

Those are important numbers to remember before we get all hysterical about the supposed dangers kids face today. The great majority of reported child abductions are, in fact, custody disputes that turn ugly. A couple is separated or divorced. The noncustodial parent picks up the kids for a weekend visit and conveniently doesn't bother to return. Legally, it's a kidnapping and gets reported as such.

I did some checking to find out what certain terms mean

Although the laws defining Non-Family Abductions vary from state to state, in general, such abductions are defined as the coerced and unauthorized taking of a child into a building, a vehicle, or a distance of more than 20 feet; the detention of a child for a period of more than an hour; or the luring of a child for the purposes of committing another crime. Many short-term abductions take place during the commission of another crime, such as sexual assault. (there are about 4600 of these a year in the US)

Stereotypical Kidnapping - requires that 1) the child be gone overnight; 2) be killed; 3) transported a distance of 50 miles or more; 4) be ransomed; or 5) that the perpetrator evidence an intent to keep the child permanently. The perpetrator also must be a stranger.

There are between 200-300 stereotypical kidnappings in the USA each year.

yes it is true so many children disappear.

I know of a girl of 18 who disappeared last week.

She was on Facebook talking to thses two guys one had a police record.

The two guys decided to meet her at a train station and she went off with them.

There were reports on the news and they thought they would find her.

They didnt because these two blokes murdered her.

So i think you have to be careful where ever you are.

Thats why they should let kids who are young be given top priorty on the public system so they can get home to there familys

^^^ If you are talking about Nona Belomesoff's murder there was only one man. He lead her to believe that there were two men and that "they" would take her to a NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) training camp and that, after training, she would probably get a job working with animals which is what she dreamt about. However the guy made it all up to lure her into the bush where he killed her.

^That's indeed a tragic event, but it's the sort of thing that happens quite rarely. It makes one wonder, though, why a girl -- a young woman, really -- of 18 would be so naïve and trusting. At the very least, she should have contacted the relevant wildlife authorities to find out if the guy was legitimate.

Well you were right about that Miss Chicken.

There was only one man who lead her to her death.

But when the reports started to come out on the news a couple of days ago it was two men,

I was watching the newa last night and it was comfrimed that she was drowned in water which is terrible.

it is sad that this girl trusted this man and didnt know he had a police record.

On the internet you can lie about your age and also you can make out you are someone else so you have to be careful who you come across.

i also think that parents need to watch over there children when they are useing the internet.

There is some very nasty people who pray on children and teens and even adults..

Also if you are meeting someone over the internet you should always take a couple of poeple with you so you are not alone.

Plus like you said Scotpens find out more imformation on the place and people you are meeting so you dont end up like this
