Red Matter - What was it?

^ EnsignRicky, is it just that i haven't been in the same threads as you lately or have you been MIA for a while? IN any case, it's good to see you!

It was something the writers threw in because JJ Abrams has a thing for red stuff. I kid you not. It's like they wrote that stuff in there to attract him to the script.

Your source for this accusation?

LINK

Let me quote it for ya.

"In the containment field in the ship is a big red ball. The ‘big red ball’ has a lot of resonance for J.J. and I: we have one in virtually everything we do. It started with the Alias pilot."

Yeah. I read that too. That would also explain why OldSpock had a gigantic ball of the stuff when all he needed was a tiny drop. It was just overkill for the sake of having a big red ball in the movie.

There's no need to be condescending. I'm perfectly capable of clicking on a link.

And in response to that link, let me quote myself from an earlier post:

Well, those micro-mini-skirted Megan Fox look-alikes who were watching the movie in the theater with me didn't give a crap what red matter was, so I didn't either.

:)

I think this is the best we can do:

According to the Star Trek: Countdown prequel comic book, which details the events leading up to the destruction of Romulus, red matter is an artificial substance created by the Vulcan Science Academy. It is manufactured from decalithium, a rare isotope which the Narada was equipped to mine.
The novelization of 2009's Star Trek by Alan Dean Foster states that red matter's destructive properties are magnified by intense heat and pressurization that a star or a planetary core can provide.

I still want to know why the Rommies couldn't have done it themselves. They use artificial singularities to power their starships for craps sake. They had the technology to create their own black holes. Why did they have to rely on Spock to fix everything for them? Why did they need some exotic red stuff when they already had the technology to routinely create artificial black holes? It makes absolutely zero sense!

It's what the Q use to make babies and you DON'T want to know what Spock had to do to get that much of it...

This is actually one issue I had with the movie, but not the fact that Spock handled the red matter instead of the Romulans (for all we know the Romulan politicians couldn't get their act together in time to save their own planet). My issue was, why have Spock be the one to be entrusted with the red matter? I understand needing the "jellyfish," since it's their fastest ship, but why not have a much younger, more skilled Vulcan at the helm? Why Spock? (Well, we all know why, but still...)

Because Spock was the Vulcan that the Romulans trusted, maybe? After all, he'd been living and working in Romulan society for years. . . and he's the one who promised to help, not the Vulcan High Command. . .

It was Decalithium. I realize many don't consider STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN canonical or even a very good story...but if nothing else it gives a very good explanation for what Red Matter is and where it came from.

So what was the point in asking?

Because you made an accusation without posting a source. Once I knew that it came from a valid source and wasn't just something you pulled out of your ass, I was then free to speak my opinion about it.

Because the supernova had already exploded. The whole plan hinged on the idea that Spock could use the breakaway-timewarp maneuver to absorb the star BEFORE it went nova (I assume this is why he needed a really fast ship, right? Time warp usually requires a starship or at least a bird of prey; a simple runabout probably wouldn't cut it).

There are all kinds of methods for time travel known by all kinds of different people, but Spock is the only one with experience in time warp with any close connections with the Romulans. It's possible some Romulan officer with ties to the Unification Movement provided him with a stock of red matter under the table when the Romulan Government never would have trusted him with it.

That's my theory and I'm stickin to it!

Why did they need some exotic red stuff when they already had the technology to routinely create artificial black holes? It makes absolutely zero sense!

If they already had the technology to create massive planet-consuming artificial black holes, why didn't they use it against their enemies at any time prior to 2387?

It makes absolutely zero sense!

Here's the Long, Spock-Like, Scientificy explanation of the Red Matter:

1. Red Matter is made from Decalithium. Decalithium is a rare substance found in the outer regions of the Romulan Star Empire. On several occasions, Mining ships have been sent to mine Decalithium. But Why?

2. Decalithium makes Red Matter. From a process currentlyu unavailable to us, the Decalithium is made into a substance that can only be classified as "Red Matter" as no other name is in existence for the matter. Perhaps "Manufactured Decalithium" as that would be the logical answer to a question of "What is the official name for Red Matter?"

3. Red Matter is indeed used to create artificial singularities, and yes, the Romulan Star Empire does use artificial singularities to power there starships. The only Logical conclusion would be that they send the Mining vessels to retrieve Decalithium, which they then manufacture into red matter, which they use to create singularities to power their ships.

Now, you can say "Why wouldn't they just do it themselves?". Well, think of it like this, The Vulcans may have perfected a system for Manufacturing the Red Matter that the Romulans didn't have access to. It could be as simple as the Vulcans being able to manufacture it quicker and in a larger amount then the Romulans.
