^ EnsignRicky, is it just that i haven't been in the same threads as you lately or have you been MIA for a while? IN any case, it's good to see you!
It was something the writers threw in because JJ Abrams has a thing for red stuff. I kid you not. It's like they wrote that stuff in there to attract him to the script.
Your source for this accusation?

Let me quote it for ya.
"In the containment field in the ship is a big red ball. The ‘big red ball’ has a lot of resonance for J.J. and I: we have one in virtually everything we do. It started with the Alias pilot."
Well, those micro-mini-skirted Megan Fox look-alikes who were watching the movie in the theater with me didn't give a crap what red matter was, so I didn't either.
According to the Star Trek: Countdown prequel comic book, which details the events leading up to the destruction of Romulus, red matter is an artificial substance created by the Vulcan Science Academy. It is manufactured from decalithium, a rare isotope which the Narada was equipped to mine.
The novelization of 2009's Star Trek by Alan Dean Foster states that red matter's destructive properties are magnified by intense heat and pressurization that a star or a planetary core can provide.
Or sends you back in time.all that says is that it's highly unstable and a drop eats planets
I still want to know why the Rommies couldn't have done it themselves. They use artificial singularities to power their starships for craps sake. They had the technology to create their own black holes. Why did they have to rely on Spock to fix everything for them? Why did they need some exotic red stuff when they already had the technology to routinely create artificial black holes? It makes absolutely zero sense!

This is actually one issue I had with the movie, but not the fact that Spock handled the red matter instead of the Romulans (for all we know the Romulan politicians couldn't get their act together in time to save their own planet). My issue was, why have Spock be the one to be entrusted with the red matter? I understand needing the "jellyfish," since it's their fastest ship, but why not have a much younger, more skilled Vulcan at the helm? Why Spock? (Well, we all know why, but still...)
It's a rare compound that can only be mined from the red sun of Whatsa.

Red Matter is matter that's red. Next movie we'll have Whatsa Matter.
An unintended side effect. I'm sure that will be added to the lable in the future.Or sends you back in time.all that says is that it's highly unstable and a drop eats planets
And in response to that link, let me quote myself from an earlier post:

So what was the point in asking?
