Romulan Mega-Ship in 2011 SOTL Calendar

Mr. Probert strikes yet again.

Isn't that how the Romulan Warbird D'deridex class was originally going to be structured?

Yup... And sized!

The two designs work best as a pair IMHO. Either of them alone is just plain weird; put together, they scream "design philosophy!" and give character to Romulan shipbuilding. The double wings stretched two different ways also create a good, solid connection to the round Vulcan "wings" familiar from ENT. It's just too bad this vertical model was never built for TNG or perhaps DS9 to enrich the Romulan fleet...

Aye, the Romulans were very repetitive when it came to their appearances in the fleet battles. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but was the D'deridex the only class of Romulan ship we saw fighting during the Dominion war?

The D'D is the only class of capital Romulan ship seen period in the TNG-era TV series--and only one of two if you count the Scimitar from Nemesis (which you should, because the idea of the Remans building it is silly).

This vertical D'D is, unfortunately, just really, really uninspired--unlike its source material, which is the single best-looking vessel in the Trek oeuvre.

Well there's the thing, it's not an 'uninspired' rehash of the original D'D, it was quite possibly what the D'D was going to look like anyway.* Studio/production reasons are why we got the horizontal one instead and only now are we seeing the vertical one in the calender.

Does this design have a name?

*I'm sure I've seen design sketches someone posted here somewhere of the 'vertical' warbird from the original concept art for TNG when it was in pre-production. Anyone know where they were posted?

It was. In fact, the only 24th century Romulan designs we saw were the D'deridex, scout/science ship from The Defector and The Next Phase, shuttle DS9, and the Valdore from Nemesis.

Heh, admittedly that's more 24th Century designs we saw than we got for the Klingons, i.e. the Vor'cha and the Negh'Var (I'm not counting the K'vort variant Bird of Prey, that's just a sized up B'rel). Any other Klingon ships we saw were 23rd Century designs that were being held in service.

I love it. I may have to buy this calender just to get a good copy of that image. The Trek universe constantly suffers from repetitive designs, and this makes a nice break while staying within somewhat established parameters.

Like all things, it was a production problem. I believe the only reason we saw multiple vulcan designs in ENT was because they were all CGI. I like to turn to the fan models for ideas on other vessels.

There's something that seems a touch awkward about that design compared to the D'Deridex, but maybe it's just because I need to see it at other angles.

Well, I'll grant that. Although I'm fonder of the original (if audited) D'D. It's hard to say if I'd like the verticalally oriented one as much as the horizontal one if it had gone through without change, however...
