Another TOS origin story?

According to Memory Beta, the Star Trek XI novelization features a line by Spock Prime, directed at Kirk in the ice cave on Delta Vega to the effect of "Just like in my universe, your Enterprise crew has come together in a time of great crisis".

This got me thinking - is there room for another TOS (prime universe) origin story?

I'm a fan of Enterprise: The First Adventure, and consider that the prime-'verse get-together. Although the main story was a little weak I loved the backstories given the crew, perticularly Sulu not wanting to be there (expanded upon in The Entropy Effect) and Janice lying about her age to enlist and get as far away from her hell-hole world as possible.

But that's not to say I wouldn't enjoy another, entirely different version of how Kirk and crew started their five-year mission, that took a different approach to E: TFA or STXI.

Anyone else?

Well, there's DC Comics' "The First Mission" (Annual #1 of their first series) by Mike Barr, which is still my favorite version.

And isn't that Phase II fan-film bunch doing an installment that's basically "This is how ST XI happened in the Prime universe"?

They are, and it'll be interesting and fun (and probably at times cringe-worthy) to see what they come up with, but I could never accept one of their films as what "really" happened in the Prime Trek universe. YMMV.

You know.....if such a project were greenlit, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be interested in tackling it.

I'd like to see the Origin of the Mirror Universe crew. Pike vs Kirk!!!! How did Kirk woo Spock away from Pike?

I'm with you! I wish Vonda McIntyre ("Enterprise: The First Adventure") had been interested in (or able to do) collaboration with Mike Barr on this.

doubt it would happen though.

Actually, I think it has plenty of chance. Dave Stern's author afterword in "The Children of Kings" (which has just arrived Down Under) talks about it being as much about Greenwood's Pike as Hunter's Pike! I reckon we'll see more origin rejigs over the next few years, as the authors take advantage of the fresh slate. New waves of ST fans (of TOS via DVD boxed sets) can't all be expected to search out second hand copies of "The First Adventure" - so if there's demand, and unless it goes into reprint, a revamped origin story is possible.

In addition to the IDW comic Dayton mentioned, it's also covered in a different way in Margaret Wander Bonanno's "The Greater Good" in Mirror Universe: Shards and Shadows.

For myself, I've shunted Mirror Images over to Diane Duane's Dark Mirror Mirror Universe, largely on the basis of the Picard interlude which is incompatible with the Deep Space Nine Mirror Universe.

I think it's time for the Anti-Monitor to come along and clean up the Mirror Universe mess. ;)

I've never really thought the phrase 'TOS origin story' made sense. What would it be? The first mission of the Enterprise under Kirk? That would be Lee Kelso, Gary Mitchell, Doc Piper with a few of our common characters, which doesn't seem to be what people mean because they want to see all the familiar characters. I suppose it could be the first mission with all the cast (minus Chekov) taking place before The Corbomite Maneuver, but that seems odd as an 'origin' story because it's a ways into the five-year mission, so it's by no means the 'original' or 'first' mission of the likes of Kirk, Spock, and Scott.

The original crew built up in stages over the course of the five-year mission, settling into the main crew we know by the second season. They don't have a common 'origin' because they each came aboard in different ways and at different times.

And since I just read it, we had something that could almost be termed an 'origin story' in the first Captain's Table book, War Dragons. We see a story taking place before the Corbomite Maneuver where Sulu and Dave Bailey have just taken their positions at the helm and navigation, and Kirk picks Uhura to take Communications full time in the story. So, in other words, the first time the main crew (minus Chekov) take up their familiar positions. Maybe an 'origin story'?

Like STXI, Enterprise: The First Adventure featured the entire crew of the 1701 (including Chekov) working under Kirk for the first time, and gave us introductions to Sulu and Janice (IIRC the rest were leftovers from Pike's regieme). Gary Mitchell spent the book in hospital on Earth, recovering from injury after a Klingon attack. IIRC, the book had some comment by Gene Rodenberry on the cover or inside. So I assume he approved (/was given money to approve).

Strangers From the Sky, the second mission of Kirk on the Enterprise, had a few temporary crew transfers to account for the crew postings in "Where No Man...".

I really don't think there's any interest in a Kirk/Mitchell/Piper origin story.

Haha, pardon me...must have been channeling the Vulcan mind too much. :rommie:

I would like to learn more about D. C. Fontana's Vulcan's Glory interpretation of Number One from "The Cage."
