Leaving the parking break on

EJA

Fleet Captain
So the TARDIS makes that wheezing-groaning noise because the Doctor deliberately leaves the parking break on? Wow, his decision must be a popular one, because the Meddling Monk, the Master, Omega, and the Rani all used that noise for their TARDIS's too.

Yes it's very funny and it's good to see the producers give the finger to the nerds who want American style continuity rather than the more British consistency that the show is based up.

Oh no! What a shock! Serialized fiction is not flawlessly logical! :scream:

I suppose solo Tardis piloting isn't something they taught at the Academy. Its a little trick her expert instructor taught her. :)

Reading posts like this, I'm reminded of a line from an episode of the British sitcom One Foot in the Grave. In the episode Only A Story, after watching an incomprehensible film, Victor Meldrew says to another character who justificies the film's errors by pointing out that it's just a story: "You say it's only a story, but there's got to be some point to it all; you can't just have a lot of strange things happening for no reason....otherwise nothing that happened would make any sense."

And there you have one of the reason so many of us were up in arms over last weeks story.

Because a throwaway line in a funny exchange superficially contradicts a noise heard in a 45-year old episode, you believe that "nothing that happened made any sense"? Surely you're not serious.

That level of internal consistency has never existed in Doctor Who and it's perfectly futile to expect it. In fact, expecting every minute detail to match throughout hundreds of episodes in serialized fiction is pure madness, even in other series where people care about things like that.

It's simple. River was wrong. A TARDIS is supposed to make that noise as it sheds residual materialization energy and making it land silently only causes increased wear on the components. Or something like that.

We shouldn't be so literal about throw-away lines. Just because a character sounds convinced about his or her facts, doesn't make them right. Another writer could come along next week and revamp things again.

It was a funny line, instantly recognizable as troublesome to "continuity" and nearly as quickly dismissed.

Well whatever it is I hope they keep doing it. I've always hated that RTD'ism of having the console room shake and throw everyone about while in flight.

Yeah, I've no problem with the stabilisers. I too hated everyone falling all over the place.

The parking brake joke... I know the TARDIS has arrived silently in the past, but I didn't find it to be a particularly funny gag in any context, really.

I don't understand the appeal of making The Doctor look like an idiot.

I thought it was a cute little moment. But I'm sure it won't be addressed again anyway (except maybe in the conclusion of this story), so it doesn't seem worth fussing over.

Exactly, its a joke and not one that affects the show to its foundation so I don't care becasue this is Who not Star Trek. How the hell can you have a canon for a show about time travel

for the Anal fans...new Tardis new brake system ;)

I was laughing at Smith doing the tardis noise, brilliant little comedy scene those.

But i suppose if people cant see it as a thorw away comedy line thay can take comfort in the fact that since a tardis is supposed to take seven times lords to fly it the Doctor just cant get to the brake in time.

Because he's not, he just likes doing things his own way. Like jellybabies or playing the recorder or loving good shoes. We all have our ticks, and his make him a bit more endearing.

With that said, I agree with the Doctor, it really is a brilliant noise.

^Presactly. Some people just want to whine and bitch about the smallest possible detail...

What you said.:techman:

I don't care if the Doctor left the parking brake on or he has to shovel live kittens into the engine, the TARDIS sound effects stay!

(well, okay, maybe not so much about the kittens, but you get the point!)

In one of the Tennant episodes (the one with Peter Kay as the Absorbaloff) someone refers to it as the best sound in the world or words to that effect. They're not wrong.
