Oh no! What a shock! Serialized fiction is not flawlessly logical! So the TARDIS makes that wheezing-groaning noise because the Doctor deliberately leaves the parking break on? Wow, his decision must be a popular one, because the Meddling Monk, the Master, Omega, and the Rani all used that noise for their TARDIS's too.![]()
Reading posts like this, I'm reminded of a line from an episode of the British sitcom One Foot in the Grave. In the episode Only A Story, after watching an incomprehensible film, Victor Meldrew says to another character who justificies the film's errors by pointing out that it's just a story: "You say it's only a story, but there's got to be some point to it all; you can't just have a lot of strange things happening for no reason....otherwise nothing that happened would make any sense."
Because a throwaway line in a funny exchange superficially contradicts a noise heard in a 45-year old episode, you believe that "nothing that happened made any sense"? Surely you're not serious.Reading posts like this, I'm reminded of a line from an episode of the British sitcom One Foot in the Grave. Yes it's very funny and it's good to see the producers give the finger to the nerds who want American style continuity rather than the more British consistency that the show is based up.
I don't understand the appeal of making The Doctor look like an idiot.
What you said. It's simple. River was wrong. A TARDIS is supposed to make that noise as it sheds residual materialization energy and making it land silently only causes increased wear on the components. Or something like that.
We shouldn't be so literal about throw-away lines. Just because a character sounds convinced about his or her facts, doesn't make them right. Another writer could come along next week and revamp things again.
It was a funny line, instantly recognizable as troublesome to "continuity" and nearly as quickly dismissed.
^Presactly. Some people just want to whine and bitch about the smallest possible detail...![]()
In one of the Tennant episodes (the one with Peter Kay as the Absorbaloff) someone refers to it as the best sound in the world or words to that effect. They're not wrong.^Presactly. Some people just want to whine and bitch about the smallest possible detail...![]()
I don't care if the Doctor left the parking brake on or he has to shovel live kittens into the engine, the TARDIS sound effects stay!
(well, okay, maybe not so much about the kittens, but you get the point!)
