New episode tonight, kids. I, of course, have to work late again while we're securing the convention contract. :scream: Then I have to work early tomorrow. I may not get to watch the eppy until Saturday. :( Hope everyone enjoys it.

Anyone else think the Ghostfacer's promo was part of the episode? I was thinking WTF? How the hell does THIS fit in?

I just had a feeling based on the recap this was going to suck. It isn't as bad as the season's worst Trickster-centered episode--"Changing Channels"--but it was doing its hardest to unseat it.

I have never enjoyed the Trickster episodes. I have always hated the lighter comedy episodes the show has attempted--they've almost all turned in the show into an awful parody of itself. The episode was just flat out boring until about 3/4 of the way in. Worse yet I thought it was a bad idea bringing in lucifer since the episode's tone clashed horribly with the gravity of the Apocalypse and his presence. At times he became almost a caricature when the series had done such a good job turning him into a chilling figure.

The episode could have been worse since for a moment I thought the writers were goingto somehow tie in Ghostfacers--fortunately it turned out to be some promo for the web series.

The Trickster was as poor as he ever was but thankfully the writers have seen fit to kill off some of the more annoying recurring characters over the last two weeks--first Zach now Gabriel.

Not to completely eviscerate the episode I did like the *idea* of the enemy of my enemy is my friend but not nearly enough was done with it.

And like I've repeatedly said the show has a bad habit of making us sit through varying degrees of mediocrity just to parcel out a new thread or interesting piece of information like we got by learning he could be put back in his cage--which unortunately was revealed in that horrible porn video schtick.

D+. SN needed to end this season. I think I'm goingto start DVRing this and watching Fringe live.

I love the Trickster. Probably explains why I really liked "Changing Channels" when it seemed hardly anyone else did. On that note...

Sad now. :(

I give a decent B.

I was wondering when we were going to see the Trickster again. I found the gods of different religions in the episode interesting and the tension between them and those who represent the Western religion (in this case, Lucifer and Gabriel).

After getting his hope back last episode, I like that Dean was using his newfound clarity to bring the Trickster back into the game. The Trickster's scene with Lucifer was my favorite. How he confronted Lucifer with his crap and how he was putting himself as the champion of the humans and not a yes man for the Angels or Lucifer. And I notice Lucifer didn't take any pleasure in killing Gabriel and that he actually shown remorse for doing the deed. Did you sense a Sam and Dean vibe from Lucifer and Gabriel?

And I also liked how the Trickster gave Sam and Dean a push in the direction of finally stopping the Apocalypse and the ending involving one of the Four Horsemen. I can't wait for the next episode.

What do you know, Rheka Sharma truely is an Indian (well Indian-Canadian) goddess.

This was a really good episode.

Waaaaaaa!!! My DVR didn't record!! :scream: :scream: I'll have to wait until the sucky CW site posts it late Saturday. :klingon:

Skywalker, Iloved Changing Channels. It's on my top 10 list for the entire series. I place it at number 7. Even Demian at TWOP gave it an A+ For the life of me, I can't figure out why folks don't like it. I think it's inspired and it makes me laugh so hard I cry. It's one of the most clever episodes they ever did. StarTrekwatcher, sounds like I'll love it. Whatever you hate, I seem to like.

That's not what I'm hearing around the grapevine. Most of the comments I've read have been positive. I love the Trickster. Anything he's in is gold for me. I guess we're fated to disagree. Was Matt Frewer's Pestilence as repugnantly nausea inducing as I've been hearing? Even the hardcore said they were turning green.

Then you'll probably love it. And you are right I think I've reached the point where I sadly have to say I'm just not enjoying SN as I once did. I'll definitely see it through until the end but next season I'm probably out which is fine since the original plan was envisioned as a 5 year run. There is no point in me continuing to watch something that just isn't clicking in my opinion.

God what a mixed bag of an episode, as much as I had a problem with this episode I think it should have been split over two episodes as there are very solid elements in this mess, but none are fully developed. And as a result all felt soft.

Teh concept of the various other gods wanting to discover some way of stopping the Angel vrs Lucifer showdown is a very good idea. The idea of using a hotel, as the setting isn't original but its certainly something that is affordable for the production.

The idea of having Gabriel take the boys message to heart is also a good one as he more then any other angel (even Castiel) seems to really embrace humanity, both its faults and its pleasure. So thats another solid idea (and this from someone who likes the Trickster in very small doses, see Mystery Spot). And in his small use in Mystery Spot we say both some direct humor from him (but really not much) but a lot of edge as well.

Then the idea of having Lucifer and Gabriel having a conflict and him standing up for humanity (plus idealogical talks the strongest part of this episode) is also a very good idea.

But as it is all in one episode the story didn't develop any of the ideas to fruition. We didn't get enough of the mystery of the hotel, to build suspense and really on this show, thats sad (and was that a new director for this episode). With the gods being little more then glorified extras (besides Kali, the only one who made a good impression, in my book), the acting with them wasn't SN at its best (putting it nicely). Casting of primary roles is something SN has improved so much over the years, but this episode was disappointing (of course I do understand in one episode they can't afford to cast people that cost, they just can't but with a little more screen time they might have became a little more then caricatures.

And then we have Lucifer and Gab. the buildup to this was jarring (especially with the episode basically going from one type of story to the other, and this includes the tone of the episode). Now the show has gone from light to dark (successfully) in several episodes, usually one of the guys is not going to broad, but also they typically don't try and jump from tone to tone multiple times in a show. Spreading out this material would have allowed them to have a bit more time separation.

Humor. When its organic to the characters and the story I usually don't have a huge problem with it as long as the characters stay true to themselves.

In this episode that means Gab as Loki (his alias) should show his humor, but when talking as Gabriel (both with Dean and Sam, when his cover was blown) the humor should have vanished as well (it decreased but not enough, not based on the one time we did see him drop his mask and reveal who he truly was). And let me just say the video was weak. If they are trying to say its good porn, then by god make it seem like good porn, that would have been some of the worst porn I have ever, ever witnessed.

Pestilence - Ok, great casting here, but the visual goo being thrown about was WAY THE HELL OVER THE TOP. Seriously, that shop owner would have thrown that person out the minute it started, the minute. Now just lose the bile being tossed about and those scenes would have worked great, even the dumbest person should have been able to tell that something was up. Though nice to be told that they did indeed take famine's (who was so awesome both in casting portrayal, yeah war you sucked....well in comparison) ring.

Ok, rant over. Things in the episode as is that I did like.

I like the casting and acting of Kali.

I liked that Dean was taking his lessen to heart. For the first time in a long time a saw a bit of spark back with Dean.

But I also liked that Sam was still very driven about the issues of the world, and that Dean really needs to make sure that Sam doesn't become so focused that he loses site of what he needs to do, and one of those things is to keep their mind and body strong.

The opening (which I really wish as well would have been longer).

I liked the elephant scene with Ganesha, which wasn't really played for laughs, I actually enjoyed (a nice way to have a visual reference to the Deva.

I loved the Lucifer, Gab scenes, both the verbal conflict and the visual one. Shows how Gabs character can still show his personality without going into over the top "humor". And both actors (especially Mark who has so far, been very solid in every scene).

I also liked (though not so much the execution) the scene where Sam has to stop Dean from saving the human from being sacrificed. Something that we really need to see more of, where you have to sacrifice innocents because you can't risk yourselves yet. To much is at stake.

I loved Dean jumping on the idea of actually using Sam to bring Lucifer there once he thought they did actually have a chance to kill him.

The casting of Pestilence. Max Headroom and Trashcan man, seems like a good match to me.

The glimmer of hope for the guys.

The episode was both about what I expected based off the horrible preview, but also better (an some cases vastly superior) but way , way to uneven for me.

Third worst episode of the season with only Changing Channels (F), Swap Meat (D) being worse. I say right smack between a D+ and C-. Lets see how it settles.

I thought that too. I was like, "Wow, they're throwing it all in tonight, aren't they?"

I thought it was WAY better than last week's. I was so glad it didn't turn out to be a throwaway like the trailer suggested. Also thought this was a very interesting angle to go...

EDITED: Since nobody else seems to be worrying about spoilers, I'll unspoiler myself:

"You're not the only god. We were here first." Glad to see that the Judeo-Christian supernatural entities are not the only ones existing on this planet. I did fail to understand, though, why the JC entities were supposedly so much more powerful than the rest? Lucifer went through them like butter - what exactly is it that makes him so much stronger?

"Lucy... I'm home!"

Definitely a mixed bag, I'd probably give it a C. It'll be interesting to see how they wrap this entire storyline up in the next three episodes. (Of course that wouldn't have been necessary if the writers hadn't wasted so much time earlier this season...)

We can't blame the writers for that. The splitting the season into stand alones with myth arc sprinkled throughout is the most serialized the show is allowed to do. Thats a studio mandate. And one of the reasons some episodes are jammed packed with two much material, as they aren't allowed to spread them out more. The more serialized the story typically the poorly performance both in syndication and in overseas sales. And with a show that performs so poorly in the US the studio has no real choice but to keep the show profitable.

But if they are going to do standalones then make them good episodes not a stitched together mish-mash of predictability and staleness.

I love a great standalone--heck one of my favorite shows TNG did them so well year in and year out from seasons 3-6. There were no arcs, no epic storytelling, not a lot of eye candy just a modest ensemble and good writers that could tell a good story on a regular basis with a nice mix of different story types. I hate SN's inconsistency. That sort of unevenness drove me up the wall with VOY--several weeks of mediocrity or awfulness just to get to a good solid or great episode. It just doesn't encourage loyal viewing. I don't want to tune into a series where it could be 50/50. I want to feel pretty confident that most weeks I'm going to walk away having enjoyed what I've just watched.

CW is such a crappy network and their reigning in of the budget and the mandate to limit serialization has hurt SN in my opinion.
