Blue ray DVD+regular tv=?

I want to get my girlfriend a Blue-ray player. She only has an old crappy tv and a decent one I took over there(but not high def or anything). Will a blue ray disc look any better than standard DVD on a regular tv?

I had that setup for a time. The Blu-ray player will not make the movies or shows look any better on a standard definition TV. The only reasons to get a Blu-ray player without an HDTV are access to bonus features that were not included on the DVD and Netflix/YouTube streaming to your TV.

It doesn't matter whether the disc is a Blu-ray or DVD if the maximum resolution of the TV is 480i, assuming that there are no technical problems with the DVD.

What do you get on a Blue Ray disc compared to a regular DVD? What sort of functionality?

HD widescreen video and higher quality (often uncompressed) audio. A blu-ray player would be pretty much wasted on a standard definition TV. You'll pay more for a blu-ray player, and more for blu-ray discs, but they won't look any better than DVDs.

I will say this, if her current DVD player is broken, or not properly functioning, it might not be a bad idea to pick up an inexpensive Bluray player and start buying movies on Blu. It will be downconverted to the standard definition of the older TV, but when she does get a newer TV, she'll already be a step ahead.

Can you get Blue Ray from Netflix? My girlfriend has it, but I haven't looked for the blue ray option since I don't have the player yet. I think I'll get the player and grab the HiDef tv a little later.

This is the best advice. You can get a Blu-ray player for $79. A good future investment for when you get an HDTV.

Yes, BluRay is available on NetFlix.

BR and reasons to upgrade now

I agree.
So you can purchase say "Star Trek" (2009) feature film and not have to double dip from DVD to Blu-ray. You get all special features in HD.

also you can get additional content if you get Blu-rays with BD-Live content.

BD-Live requires the Blu-ray Disc player to have an Internet connection to access Internet-based content.

For example for Star Trek TOS season 1 Blu-ray BD-Live content you get

on Star Trek TOS season 2 Blu-ray BD-Live content you get...

Even better, many Blu-Ray players also offer Netflix streaming so you can just watch Netflix movies off the internet.

They're not HD, but man, they're convenient!

I know some people who are starting to collect Blue-ray DVDs of their very favorite movies because they're planning on getting a good high-def TV or computer screen in the future. It's not a bad thing to collect if you have the money (for instance, I wouldn't mind having the Planet Earth series, Lord of the Rings and maybe a couple other movies on Blue-ray for when I get a TV better than my old school tube :).

Oh, to answer your question (though most people here already have) it won't look much better on her older TV at all.

Netflix does do HD now-- over my brother's XBOX we were able to get HD streaming. I've been watching stuff over my Wii lately :).

Honestly I would either take that money and spend it on something else or save it up and put it towards a fund for a high-def TV. You can get Blu-ray from Netflix, but it costs more per month, and considering you would get almost no benefit from the Blu-ray on standard def, it seems like wasted money to me.

A Blu-ray player will play standard DVDs.
Until you have a HDTV you can still rent standard DVDs from Netflix, but a purchase should be as a Blu-ray.
