Wisdom teeth

I have been having quite a bit of pain at the back of my mouth of late. Last night I had a good look and feel and I seem to have my two bottom wisdom teeth erupting through.

The strange thing is that I am 52 years old. I got my top wisdom teeth when I was in the 20s and had to have them removed.

I looked up on the net and found out some people can get their wisdom teeth later in life. There has even been cases of people getting them in their 70s.

Any way, I though I would ask people here

1) Have you got all or some of your wisdom teeth. If so at what age?

2) Have you had to have any wisdom teeth extracted?

I just had all 4 our a couple of weeks ago and it was a relatively painless process. They give you some good drugs and you don't remember anything. By the time day 3 or 4 rolled around I was out eating in restaurants again :)

From what I hear though, I'm lucky. I've known others' teeth to get infected... ewww!

I got all my 4 wisdom teeth when I was in high school, and I never had a problem with them. A true testament to the fact that I was wise far beyond my age.

I got my wisdom teeth when I was in college(18ish), but Senior year (21), I had them out--top and bottom. Didn't bother me much, but was a bit bruised up afterwards.

Nobody is born with wisdom teeth and if they are it's a weird one off.
Actually, my Mom is one of those "one offs." She never had her wisdom teeth come in, neither top nor bottom. She says that makes her "more evolved." :)

I had all four extracted back in 2003. I was 24.

One of the wisdom-teeth had abcessed and was causing an extraordinary amount of pain in my jaw. Sensodyne, ibuprofen, nothing over-the-counter would temper it. So I went in and had the four teeth yanked out.

They say you're either a sweller or a bleeder. I was a bleeder. Oh how much blood there was ... yuck. I had to flush the spaces in my gums with water for about a month to keep them clear as they healed... and was relegated to soup, ice cream, and other soft foods for a while. Gauze tastes awful, by the way.

Seven years later, I still have some issues with my teeth -- some which I really should get addressed ASAP -- but the wisdom teeth have not been an issue since.

I got mine in my teens and I still have them.

I had my '12' year old molars removed though, as I had over crowding and braces, so there was lots of room for my wisdom teeth.

only my lower left has started to come in . . . the others are kinda sideways (aimed toward the front of my mouth) so I'll need them taken out eventually . . . when I have dental coverage . . .

Three of mine have erupted; of those, the top left seems to be most of the way out. The bottom right one is erupted and is actually sideways (pointing out to my cheek). I have to have them all out eventually, but it always seems like the car needs something crucial whenever I've saved up enough. They only hurt occasionally and they're not disturbing my other teeth, so I'm not worried yet. Everyone else in my immediate family has had theirs out.

If she has not had her wisdom teeth then how can she be a one off and have been born with them?

(shrugs) I'm 35 and more than one dentist has confirmed that I don't have any wisdom teeth.

From everything I've heard, I don't mind at all!

I had an upper one that was all but rotted away taken out 2 years ago. Heckuva root on that thing.

I get tired of people assuming they have to come out instantly. And they prattle off about how if you go overseas for the peace corps or join the military, they require all your wisdom teeth removed. None of which means that every person has to have their wisdom teeth removed as soon as they appear. If they ain't twisted and you got room for 'em, they can stick around for awhile.

They do seem to rot easier than the other teeth.

And it makes me wonder, if the body can add teeth later in life, why can't it replace missing adult ones? Such a limited life form humans are.

I'm assuming you left out the word "you."

I probably got them from my Dad's side or my Grandpa. Everyone says I look a lot like my grandfather. I even got his red hair. My mom had light brown hair--almost blonde-- and my dad had black hair, but I have reddish blonde hair like my grandfather.

Who knows? Maybe it's just one of those weird little things Mother Nature kicks out once in awhile.

eta: Apparently, being born without any wisdom teeth is rather common. WikiAnswers.

I know that some people have a third set of teeth though I believe it is quite rare.

No.

Heaven help me for bothering to intervene in an I Am Legend thought stream, but what he is saying is this:

No one is BORN with wisdom teeth, as they tend to grow later during adolescence.. The "one off" would be someone born with wisdom teeth.

You said your Mom was the "one off", because she never had wisdom teeth.

He's saying you are confused, because he clearly meant "one off" to refer to people who were born with wisdom teeth, not people who never grew any at all.

Is everyone getting confused at what I'm saying or something?
Replies to what I said don't make any sense. LOL

Obviously, I was able to follow the logic chain.
