Who's getting the Avatar DVD?

Nope. It was a pretty weak movie once you move past the stunning visuals...

It's actually a great movie, which is why it's the most successful film in history by more than a little bit. :techman:

Most saw it because of the 3d effects. It was the most publicized 3d film of recent years. I didnt think they were all that great. Some people think this is the first "modern 3d film". Which isnt true of course. Beowulf had much better 3d sequences and that came out 3 years ago. It was one of the first to use new 3d tech.

I don't know, I kind of doubt it. Personally, I saw it for the special effects, and I certainly wasn't the only person I know that did so. Anecdotal, I know, but I can't help but feel those sentiments accounted for a significant chunk of the box office total.

If you enjoyed it, great. But I thought it was a mediocre film at best.

Not I.

If I see it again it will be because someone I know has bought it, or because of the re-release on IMAX 3D.

Surprisingly, I plan on buying this barebones edition but refuse to get any of the special releases in the future.

I happened across a bootleg about a week and a half ago, and I could find no lack of quality. Can't wait till the studio gives me a better copy! It's worth paying for :techman:

Nope. It was a pretty weak movie once you move past the stunning visuals, and that'll happen much faster on my TV than in IMAX 3D. I really can't see myself sitting through a rewatch of it at home.

Wow!

It's AMAZING how much I am reading this sentiment in just THIS THREAD, alone!

I have been away from here for several months and had no idea what the general feeling was towards the film. I guess my assessment of it was like most of you - it was visually quite well done but what there was of the story was pretty weak and became quite boring after a while.

I personally feel the film was AT LEAST one hour too long. I actually started getting bored towards the end and the overly simplistic "military bad/ nature good" left wing crap(and while I am moderate, I definitely lean slightly more to the left, so for it to be too much even for ME actually says a lot!)just made me feel insulted(partly due to the overly simplistic nature of the message).

If we were any gauge, I'd think "Avatar" has made most of the money it's going to make from ticket sales and the DVD sales would be quite soft.

The film was too long. The combat scenes in particular should've been significantly cut back. By the time Bad Guy landed in the forest I was thinking "just die already."

That said, I'll be picking it up on Blu-Ray. I've no interest in special features so a 'bare bones' release suits me just fine.

Even ignoring the fact this is a vanilla edition and that Avatar isn't that good a movie anyway, what's the point in buying it if you don't have a 3-D televsion?

3D is more overrated than Avatar is.

Any film which isn't worth seeing in 2D or on the small screen isn't worth seeing, period. The Star Wars prequels certainly fall into this category, the only reason they merited my viewing at all was out of nostalgia for the OT and a more recent interest in the universe via the EU. The likelihood of my acquiring them on Blu-Ray is near zero. Not because they lose too much on the small screen, but because there was never anything there in the first place.

Avatar is overrated? All I ever hear is how much everyone thinks it sucks.

You know...despite almost $3 billion.

I'll definitely rent Avatar on Apple TV whenever it hits the US iTunes store, but I very much doubt that the experience will move me to the extent required to spend my hard-earned allowance on the BD (either this version or the November double-dip).

I hear ya but there was a SHITLOAD of hype. Our receptionist at work went and, in her own words, she NEVER goes to the movies. It was kinda like TPM or "Titanic". You kinda HAD to go. Also take a look at the competition last December. Besides Downey's Holmes(which I always saw as rather niché)there were those Chipmunks and very little else. Cameron had almost three months to himself! Add to that the inflated price for tickets in 3D and you have a HUGE potential for earning.

You know, maybe I'm biased, because I think it's a fantastic piece of cinema. And I don't want to be a victim of a confirmation bias, or anything...but on the internet, all I hear is how much it sucked. But everyone I know in real life, and new people I've met since the film came out...everyone loves it, thinks it's brilliant.

So am I looking for people who love it? Or is it the nattering nabob of negativity that is the internet once again rearing its ugly head?
