New Look Daleks Revealed

They very much are. LOOK MA, I CAN DRAW ARBITRARY LINES, TOO! OMG!

You may be trying to mock the concept, but middle green line you added makes a good point – the slope there doesn't match the overall slope of the Dalek at all. I'd have probably adjusted that were I the artist.

Actually, no, I'm just pointing out how silly it is to hate one but not the other when the differences are all but non-existent. And then to justify that hate through the use of arbitrary nonsense is... well, nonsense.

They're both hunched over and they both a split midsection. Those are the only two real complaints anyone's had to make, and even those complaints are goofy. Other than that, it's just that they happen to be colored rather than metallic. And if you think the concept art would have wound up any different in that regard, you really are just deluding yourself.

C'mon guys, can't we just disagree without coming to virtual blows?

Looking it over, I'm thinking it could be fixable if they added a wider diameter dome and grille section.

Apparently they have been redesigned for health and safety reasons
Health and Safety workers are the devil. They're worse than Traffic Wardens or those guys in luminous jackets who think they're the Police but actually they're something totally gay like Community Support Officers.

Are you an artist? Have you ever taken a design class or been paid to create something like this? Gep knows what he is talking about, and I agree on every point. Make these things metallic and they'll still look goofy. The person who converted the concept art into the prop clearly didn't have a firm grasp of either the concept or general aesthetics. Personally I'd say the concept artist was somewhat lacking as well, but the final product was far worse.

I'm sure you folks are sick of me posting pics tonight. But just one more.

If they could retrofit the new casings with a larger dome and grille piece, then build up the base of the 'neck' to lessen the angle. (current version on the Right, my 'fixed' version on the Left) they'd look tons better.

Yeah, that does.

I'm not enough of a classic Who nut to get apoplectic over them changing the Daleks (they're pretty goofy looking to begin with), but just from the standpoint of the designers being professionals who should know better, these are really, really bad. That the poor choice is so basic and easy to fix makes it all the more annoying.

'Goofy' goes without saying with most of DW's villains. The need to add it on was to emphasize it. ;)

I will say though, I like the new eye-stalk thingies much better on the new ones.

I'm not sold on the eyes yet, but the little ball-and-socket on the stalks is inspired, certainly. At last they can look in a direction other than the way they're facing.

All this chatter is making me want to revisit my own Dalek design I was working on a while back. Go-go-gadget Legs!

Cutter, that looks way better and it isn't a major change. I'm still trying to work out if the new Daleks were a rushed design or if they just spent too long on them. They have a whiff of overdesign about them.

Health and Safety is one of those things that's probably gone too far in modern society, but that doesn't mean we should turn back the clock to when builders had to wander along girders 350 ft in the air without safety harnesses ;)

Surely they could just get smaller people to drive the Daleks though?

Someone on the Behind the Sofa website did make a good point, kinda like one I made somewhere else on this forum, in that the Daleks looked good under RTD, but also a bit generic because they were all practically the same (all the better to cgi you) aside from Sec and the surpreme Dalek they were. How much cooler would the cult of skaro have been if Caan had been silver, Thay red and, er the other guy (Donatello?) the standard gold.

Hopefully they may get some tinkering with before we see these guys again.

The concept art shots are so much better and would have made these new daleks perfect. Those side on shots of the prop are just awful to look at. I also prefer the disc on the eye stalk on the concept art. The larger plunger is also better and more in proportion to the rest of the body.

Couldn't they just make them fully robotic and remotely controlled? Or is that cost prohibitive?

The Daleks introduced in 2005 were excellent designs, combining the best aspects of the 60s, 70s, and 80s Daleks into a visually satisfying whole. They looked squat, mean, and dangerous, the final product of millions of years of warfare across the known Universe. They had that sameness to them, but so what? Daleks wanted to conform everything!

I don't mind the primary colour scheme for these new Daleks or their more obese casings, making them more intimidating, but why did they have to ditch the metallic look that their predecessors had? I want these new Daleks to have a colour scheme more like the Starfleet uniforms seen in JJ Abrams' Star Trek rather than the Starfleet uniforms from Star Trek: TOS, making them seem more real (more like the concept art).

yeah, that would be bearable.

Of course, it's just to sell toys. Same reason for all the colours; so bratty children will bug their parents to buy them all. But how they can go from a perfectly modernised design no one disliked (well, some colours other than chavbling gold would have been nice, but...) to these utter monstrosities is beyond incompetence. Or, in Moffat parlance: they should be clubbing these people to death.

They look fine. Notably, from a head-on view the differences in proportions aren't very noticable and no doubt that's what they thought most important. And if this sells enough toys to the "bratty children" that everyone else insists are the proper audience for DW anyway, well then Moffat and company have some job security.
