Great concept; terrible execution

All the Star Wars Lego games. The characters aren't responsive enough, dammit! Also the puzzles are too frustrating for me to figure out. I just want to shoot stuff. I love Star Wars and I love lego and I love Star Wars Lego. How could they miss?

I'll second this, but for different reasons.

You can't die! Yes, I know this is a casual game, but for the love of god at least give me the illusion of the possibility of losing. It's no fun playing a game where the challenge is literally non-existent. And no, collecting bits of stuff for the 101% ending doesn't count.

I thought Evil Genius has a great concept. It was a decent game as is, but like lots of games in the genre the micromanaging just gets to you after awhile.
What kills it for me is

A) the fact that you have to micromanage the minions on the world map

and

B) After spending half the game building a base, the game forces you to change locales half way through and start over from scratch.

The original Legend of Zelda and Castlevania 2 fit into this category because you need a walkthrough/map to complete them for the first time.

Black & White surely has to get a mention.

I remember that. It was fun, at first, but it became very repetitive and dull after a while... I ended up wanting to do nothing but terrorize my people and send my creature to destroy everything.

I don't think I ever got that far with it, despite a few attempts over the years. I have a vague memory of getting stuck on this level where I had to win over an opposing god's followers bu i found myself in a situation where their nearest village was way outside my range and no matter what I did I couldn't do anything but chuck flaming boulders at them. The bloody animal was a waste of space too.

The Force Unleashed. Lightsabers and the force???!!! Awesome? Not really. I found the force and lightsaber upgrades clunky and there is a lot of aimless wandering.

ST: Legacy.
It's hard to count the ways this game blew chunks. The fact that they had all 5 Captains for voiceover, and put out a game that was almost unplayable on PC, and then abandoned it....I don't know when there's been a bigger opportunity lost in PC gaming.

Agreed. There was gigantic hype surrounding it... I haven't tried it on xbox yet [the version everyone claims is vastly superior], but here I am still playing Bridge Commander.

I have long ago learned that Star Trek games are, as a rule, rather crap so it's been a while since I've been disappointed.

Indeed. The last time I played a Star Trek game was Elite Force. A rarity amongst Star Trek games in that it was actually good.

There was an ascii adventure game called EGA Trek back in the day, remember that? Games were so minimal then they couldn't disappoint so much.

Those were the days. "the Union is being invaded by the Mongols and the Vandals"

It's kind of unfortunate that the AI is so crap, though. Whenever I go back and play it again, it strikes me that no matter what level I'm playing, I just have to make my way from choke point to choke point, then click madly to shoot the wave of enemies that appears, then repeat.

On that note, I found Bridge Commander kind of disappointing, actually. It's not terrible by any stretch, but I never really got the feel of being in command of a starship like I'd hoped for.

^^ The real strength of Bridge Commander are the near decade of incredible mods that the fan community continues to make.

Superman Returns

Its an open world game where you play as the man of steel. Could have been awsome.

To be fair, this is a phenomena that affects most licensed games and is hardly limited to Star Trek.

^No question, though there have been some really good Star Wars games over the years. Sadly though, not of late. I could probably name some other exceptional licensed games too like Ghostbusters, Butcher Bay & Arkham Asylum but they're the exceptions. Star Trek games have never made a game that's notable in it's own right, just rare cases like Elite Force where they managed to get all the way up to "good" or "OK".

I disagree that good Star Trek games are a rarity. Both 25th Anniversary and Judgement Rites where fantastic games. Then there's A Final Unity, Birth of the Federation, Armada (and to a lesser extent Armada II) the Starfleet Command series as well as the already mentioned Elite Force (and its sequel) and Bridge Commander.

There haven't been many outstanding Star Trek games but there's been plenty of good games.

Honestly, compared to the wide range of non-Star Trek games out there, most of the games you listed are just average.

Star Trek: Online

The game seemed rushed, ground combat is awful. It should have been a great game.

Most MMO's are rushed, buggy and missing content at launch. Especially for a game that switched developers a year in, without the release deadline being commensurately being pushed back. Good thing about them, and the whole reason you pay for a subscription, is that what you get at launch is not the final product.

At the very least, you shouldn't refer to it in the past tense. If it doesn't meet your standards (which are perfectly valid, don't think I don't understand where you're coming from) I'd suggest giving it another shot after the Season 2 release. S2 will be what STO would have been had they pushed back the aforementioned deadline. I view the game in its current state as an extended beta, which is getting slightly better each week.

Really? Continuing to pay for a game in order to play it and the game not every being quite finished both sound like negatives to me.
