I genuinely believe that Moffat intended the audience to interpret the scene of Amelia, in the morning, sitting on her suitcase, and looking up when she hears the TARDIS' wheezing/groaning engines literally. There is absolutely no reason that Moffat's Doctor cannot go back for Amelia, no matter what the future says.

That was my take on it, too.

We'll have to wait and see about that. If it isn't revisited, then it was a dream. If it is....well, that'll answer that.

Why? Why is it not a dream if they go back to it?

And on a unrelated note:

I liked it when 11 called the TARDIS "love". :)

^ A girlish squeal of glee, known to have come from fanboys too (Myself, I admit, included).

Here's a good example:

Dreams in television and film are signposted with awkward camera angles and surreal imagery
Why? Sometimes they aren't signposted. I've seen that, and if I can think of an example I'll post it.

An episode of Blackadder comes to mind, the one with Samuel Johnson in it. "Ooohh, I see! It's just a dream!"

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

I just rewatched the scene. All you see is a very distant TARDIS sound, which persists over to Amy waking up and finding the TARDIS materialized outside her window and being just as excited as little Amelia was when she heard it. Yes, it lacked the fuzzy border most dream sequences have, but the only answer that makes sense based on the scene as a whole is that she incorporated the sound into her dream, where she was dreaming of herself waiting for him to show up.

It was the exact same TARDIS sound effect. Not one, then another, but the same one persisting through both cuts.

@Australis - Yeah but they probably thought that Baldrick suddenly sprouting a German Shepards head followed by Blackadder's "Oh I see, it's a dream" line was enough of an indication that it was a dream. At that stage oblique camera angles and vasoline on the lense becomes slight overkill.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

The point being up until then we didn't know it was a dream.

And cutting straight from Amelia to Amy in bed waking up was a big indicator to me. The engine noise is consistent throughout, an uniterrupted flow.

Case closed, as some really annoying poster in the TrekXI forum used to say.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

The scene where the Atraxi is scanning the Doctor and displays the images of the previous Ten Doctors and then the Eleventh steps through Ten's image gave me goosebumps.

Yeah, that's got to be one of my favorite scenes:

"and there's just one more question, just a little one. Is this planet protected?"

Mind you if the Doctor has given Humanity FTL then he may have to modify his 'warning, I'm the Doctor' speech...

"There are two very important things to consider here, firstly the inhabitants of this world have the ability to travel the stars. Think about that, a bunch of hairless chimpanzees with an inscrutable curiosity, the sort of people who would press a button to destroy all of creation just because they could, who have spent most of their existence trying to kill each other and have built wonderful civilizations in such a short space of time...and you've just threatened their planet.
Do you really want them to find out where YOU live?

Oh, and the second thing, and this is the really crucial element that I think you have not considered is this:

I'm the Doctor."

Still far from sold on Smith.

IMHO it was too soon for the flashback scene. Seeing as how the new Doctor hasn't done anything noteworthy apart from beating some badly written alien of the week plot it was more like showing all incarnations of 007 just to end it with a shot of Mini Me. Might have been better if he'd done it in a darker mood like Tennant during the finale of "The Family Of Blood".

And why exactly couldn't they have postponed the redesign of the Tardis interior until the set designer was sober again?

But then again I'm probably in the minority since my favorites are Pertwee and Tennant.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

All this talk about Romance, Sex and Love yadda yadda, I really don't want to see any of this as it relates to the Doctor. Personally, I'd rather see him be a father figure to these companions, at the most, and at the least, a friend. That's it. Period.

I'd be dreadfully bored by that, but since it's not been the way that Davies and Moffat and the other writers have approached nuWho up until now I'm not particularly concerned.

Well that is how the old series was...

Exactly so. Pass.

The scene doesn't play as a dream. Dreams in television and film are signposted with awkward camera angles and surreal imagery.

Not true - what you're describing is simply one cliche way of shooting and editing a dream sequence in the case that the director wants to signal that it's a dream.

Still far from sold on Smith.

Too true; he ain't showin' nothin' - but it's one episode in, and honestly half of the issue is that Moffat seems to have written the Doctor in Tennant's voice here. Allow for some evolution.

Enjoyed seeing McGann in the line-up, there. :)

Could anybody sense the budget cuts for Doctor Who, apart from the stripped down website? Not that the budget and effects were ever an important part of Doctor Who, even with the ostensively much more flashy and modern NuWho.

"The Eleventh Hour" felt slightly more slicker and cinematic than Doctor Who under RTD and the segment where the crash landing TARDIS did a fly over central London was as good a segment as the TARDIS chase segment in "The Runaway Bride", plus Prisoner Zero was similar in quality to the Jagrafess. Judging by the Season Five trailers, it seems like they've concentrated the SFX budget on the bigger stories.

Well we've got the big dogfight in space scene coming up in a few weeks. I'm sure that sucked up a big chunk of the CGI budget.

That was actually my least favourite part. They didn't need to hammer home the idea that he's The Doctor by using media studies student level ideas of symbolism.

It was awesome, but it wasn't symbolism. They literally showed all The Doctors and many of his deeds. How is any of that symbolic? It's just history.

Sorry, at least one person died- the woman doctor in the coma ward. It was offscreen, but Prisoner Zero owned up to it.

Thats what they are trying to achieve. The cinematography is different, more movie like. Its faster, more fluidic and smooth than the previous RTD era eps.

Its better, INMHO. I liked it. ;)
